Jason Martinez

Thanks for joining me! 75 minutes of baseball chatting starts now.
Chris
4:38
Will this finally be the year Braun gets traded?
Jason Martinez
4:39
The Brewers are good! They'll be looking to add pitching at the deadline and not looking to trade their best player.
Jackson
4:39
Can Jaime Garcia to the Cubs for Mark Zagunis and Victor Caratini work?
Jason Martinez
4:40
Definitely not both. Maybe one, but it really depends on the state of the Cubs' SP in a month and Jaime Garcia would need to be on a roll. Probably not even one of them, though.
Ari
4:40
What do you think of the Padres draft?
Jason Martinez
4:41
Bold prediction: Mackenzie Gore becomes the Padres' version of Kershaw/Bumgarner. Not saying as good, but a frontline homegrown lefty starter who leads the team for years. Considering how bad their luck has been with No. 1 draft picks over the years, I think they're due for one to become a superstar.

Jason, what are your sources for all your updates? Great stuff, a big fan....best there is.
Jason Martinez
4:43
Thanks! I follow every baseball writer/reporter who has ever broken any roster-related news and I try not to drop off the radar for very long. If I stopped paying attention for one day, I'll miss a lot. Baseball moves fast.
David
4:44
Cameron Maybin has spent 11 years in the majors. How crazy is that?
Jason Martinez
4:45
Debuted at 20 years old, I believe. Too bad he's been hurt so often. Having sort of a breakout season ... .377 OBP, 19 SB.
Matt
4:46
Lucas duda for Derek fisher?
Jason Martinez
4:46
Astros are so deep. They don't need to trade for a bat, although Fisher could be a huge upgrade over Aoki.
Jose vargas
4:46
Hey there, need to chose between chapman or fisher?
Jason Martinez
4:47
Both have a chance to stick and play regularly. Slight chance that Fisher goes back to AAA when Reddick is healthy, but it depends on how he does for the next week or however long Reddick is out.
Greg
4:48
Do the Cubs use their farm system to upgrade their rotation? Jimenez in play?
Jason Martinez
4:50
Let's see how they're doing in a month. No sense of urgency in that division. They could trade a mid-level prospect for a veteran mid-rotation starter or they could use the big names (Jimenez, Cease) if they want to go after a frontline guy with at least 2+ years of club control.
Adam
4:51
Obviously a big If but, if the Angels could stay at .500 for the next month or two could they go on a surge? Potentially Trout, Richards, Skaggs, Bedrosian, Street, and Bailey could all be healthy.
Jason Martinez
4:52
Yep, but so many teams are in the same boat. The goal for these teams dealing with injuries is to stay afloat until their back to full health. Kind of like acquiring multiple impact players at the trade deadline.
Jeb
4:52
What are the Bucs going to do with Cutch? Seems like they're in a bad spot.
Jason Martinez
4:54
Not if he continues to hit. I think he's something like 16 for his last 37. If he keeps it up, his trade value will strong in late July.
Jay
4:54
What would it take for the Nats to get Melancon back from the Giants?
Jason Martinez
4:56
Probably not a lot if they're willing to take on that contract. I'm not sure the Giants want to eat any of that contract a few months into the deal. Even if they don't bounce back in '17, I think they'll come back strong next season and they'll need a closer.

14.5 million dollar question: Is McCutchen just on a hot streak or is he back for real?
Jason Martinez
4:58
There's no way to know that for sure. But considering his track record and age (only 30 yrs old), I'd lean towards him being back. Well, maybe not "MVP-caliber" back but definitely back to being a well-above average baseball player.
Tyler Clippard
4:59
I've reviewed all 29 times Girardi has used Clippard this year. 20 of the 29 time were in high leverage situations (runners on, start of an inning with a 1 or 2 run lead, or the game was tied). Clippard has failed to preserve the score in 10 of those 20 times. Do the Yankees need to trade for another shutdown reliever for this innings between the starter and Betances/Chapman?
Jason Martinez
5:00
I don't think it's a major concern yet. Once Aroldis is back (within a week, I think) and Betances is back in the 8th inning role, I think the Yankees will be happy to let someone separate themselves as the go-to 7th inning guy. If Clippard continues to struggle, it could be Warren or Holder.
Anthony
5:00
What is happening with the Giants this year? Are they going to have a fire sale for Cueto, Nunez, Pence, Melancon, etc?
Jason Martinez
5:01
Cueto and Nuñez will likely be traded. Probably not the guys with multiple years on their contract. Not that the Giants wouldn't listen. I just don't think it will happen. No need for a fire sale. They're not an old team.
Will
5:02
Think Nate Jones has time to rebuild some lost stock
Jason Martinez
5:03
For the trade deadline? Probably not. White Sox wouldn't be in a hurry to trade him, anyways. He's signed long-term. If he gets healthy and takes over as closer if they trade D-Rob, his value would be so much higher in the offseason.
Jacob
5:04
Does tapia stay when parra comes back or does he get went down to get more at bats
Jason Martinez
5:05
AAA. He's barely playing now with Parra out. Needs at-bats so he can be ready in case they do need him later in the season.
jeff
5:06
Derek Fisher up for an audition to show off his skills in order for Astros to add pitching
Jason Martinez
5:07
I think it's an audition to take over as the starting LF. Aoki hasn't hit much. If Fisher can hold his own while Reddick is out, I don't see how they send him back and keep playing Aoki.
Brock Zantoni
5:07
What is the difference between "calling a player up" and "purchasing the contract" of a minor league player?
Jason Martinez
5:08
"Recalled from minors" is for players already on the 40-man roster. Players not on the 40-man roster need to have their contracts "purchased" or "selected" before being added to the active roster.
True Aces
5:08
Is it fair to say the only true aces in the game are Sale, Kershaw, and Bumgarner? They seem to be the only ones you can count on to dominate 30 out of 32 starts.
Jason Martinez
5:09
Scherzer also included. A few others are right behind.
Theo
5:10
Schwarber for Archer?
