MLBTR Live Chat With Jason Martinez: June 6, 2018

Jason Martinez

Sorry for the delayed start time. I was watching the Padres finish off a 7-3 homestand with a big win over the Braves.
Ray
4:50
If the padres are still within 5 games at the all star break do you see them make any moves to make a push for the playoffs?
Jason Martinez
4:52
As enjoyable as it is to watch them play well and play meaningful games in June, I don't think they'll still be close to 5 games out at the All-Star break. If they are, I think Preller would be aggressive.
4:53
And that could mean adding a SP rental that wouldn't cost them a top prospect or adding an impact bat who is under contract for several seasons but would cost some of their best prospects.
Landen S.
4:53
What do you think about Alex Reyes injury coming back from a start?
Jason Martinez
4:54
I don't care about the Cardinals and I am seriously bummed. One start and he's out for the season. He should be healthy entering his age-24 season in 2019, though.
Eric Jr.
4:55
Who are the Yankees more likely to land: MadBum or Blake Snell?
Jason Martinez
4:57
Very little chance of adding either. MadBum is signed for cheap in '19 so the price tag would be very high. And the Giants probably aren't dropping out of the pennant race. The NL West is not good.
4:58
Snell is becoming a legit frontline starter and he's under control thru 2022. Yankees have the farm system to do something big. But probably not Snell.
Rick
4:59
In your opinion if Cueto comes back a 100% does the Giants become the favorite in the West?
Jason Martinez
4:59
Sure. They would be my pick if MadBum and Cueto were healthy. I don't trust that Cueto will come back 100%, though.
Brian Sabean
5:00
Why do yankee fans keep thinking MadBum is on the block?
Jason Martinez
5:00
Wishful thinking.
Tyler G
5:01
Aside from Cole Hamels, who do you see the Rangers dangling out there for contenders?
Jason Martinez
5:03
I'm sure they'll listen on every player. Question is which players have value to a contender. Beltre, Kela, Claudio, Diekman, Fister, Colon would appear to make the most sense.
Alex
5:03
Hello Jason, will the Yankees add another arm soon?
Jason Martinez
5:05
I don't think it will be soon. They're good right now. Waiting another 6 weeks gives them a chance to get a look at Domingo German and maybe another young starter (Chance Adams and Erik Swanson come to mind; maybe even Justus Sheffield) before deciding how badly in need they are for another SP.

Why or what is delaying Henley finding a new home ,could he be considering retirement
Jason Martinez
5:08
Difficult to find a good fit. Hanley wants to play. Not sure who has a lot of at-bats for him right now. Might need to wait it out and hope that a team's 1B/DH situation changes (injury, slump).
Big Game James
5:09
I’ve strung together some decent outings this season.  What’s the likelihood I get moved for a low end prospect?
Jason Martinez
5:10
Very likely. Well-respected veteran who has had maybe 2 bad starts this season. He's usually good enough to give his team a chance to win.
Jim
5:12
Who are some good, young, controllable starters that will be available. Archer? Fulmer?
Jason Martinez
5:14
Maybe Stroman. He's under contract thru '20. He would be the Jays' biggest trade chip if he comes back healthy. O's could shop Gausman and Bundy. Reds could make Dan Straily available.
Drake
5:15
Could Brad Hand be on the Cardinals Radar?
Jason Martinez
5:16
Sure. I can't think of a contender that couldn't use Hand in the Andrew Miller/Josh Hader type role, if not the closer.
Rally Monkey
5:16
Think the Angels will send Calhoun on rehab assignment to try and get his offense going?
Jason Martinez
5:17
That would be smart. How long he's stays on the DL might have more to do with Michael Hermosillo's performance. If he's hitting, they won't rush Calhoun back.
Fluffhead
5:19
Do you think a team will meet the White Sox intangibly-inflated market value for Jose Abreu, or do you see him signing an extension to stay with the pale hose?
Jason Martinez
5:21
Considering how bad the 1B market was this past offseason and how good of a fit he is as the veteran leader of a young team that could have a core of Latin prospects (Moncada, Luis Robert, Eloy Jimenez, Micker Adolfo) in 2-3 years, I think he's more likely to sign an extension.
Ron
5:22
The Braves need a front-line pitcher to lead the staff.  Teheran and Folty are simply not consistent.  What would they need to offer the Rangers to land Hamels?
Jason Martinez
5:24
I think they could get a deal done without giving up Soroka, Allard or Riley as long as they take on most (or all) of his remaining salary. Their next tier of prospects is still really good.
Dave Dombrowski
5:25
I want Kelvin Herrera. Who do I have to give up for him?
Jason Martinez
5:27
Barnes and Kelly have been very good and Thornburg should be back by the end of the month. Not sure if they need to deal from their already-thin farm system to add another setup man.
Matt
5:28
Any chance my Red Sox acquire JT Realmuto?
Jason Martinez
5:29
It's an intriguing fit, but I don't think they have the farm system to get a player of that caliber. Their best prospect (Groome) is recovering from TJ surgery. Their next best prospect (Chavis) was suspended for 80 games. And the system isn't very deep after that.
Dan Straily
5:30
I'm a Marlin, Jason.
Jason Martinez
5:31
Yes. Thank you. Former Reds, A's, Astros and Padres pitcher Dan Straily.
And former Cubs pitcher. See how I can get confused?
Pads fan
5:32
Who gets here first? Urias or Tatis?
Jason Martinez
5:32
Urias. Not as much upside as Tatis, but very close to MLB-ready. Tatis is going to take a bit longer to figure things out.
