MLBTR Live Chat With Jason Martinez: June 7, 2017

Jason Martinez
5:09
This would be the Yankees' chance to remind everyone how rich they are. Sounds like it could take $400MM.
Bill
5:09
How is Bobby Evans still at the helm when the Giants failures stem all from him? Poor signings, lack of a farm system? Anything they can do to right the ship for the future?
Jason Martinez
5:11
Are we watching the same Giants team, Bill? They've won the World Series three times since 2010 with teams led by homegrown stars. With that said, I think they have to take advantage of a rare bad season by flipping Cueto at the deadline.
Drew
5:12
What can Darvish fetch in a trade? One top 50 and a few other pieces? Or two 50-100 prospects?
Jason Martinez
5:13
I can see a top 50 prospect as the centerpiece. They could probably get 2 Top 100 prospects.
Willy
5:15
Will Kopech be called up this season?
Jason Martinez
5:15
Doubtful. White Sox are rebuilding. A 21 yr old kid who throws 103 MPH needs to be handled with care. Giolito and Lopez should be up in 2017, though.
Ben
5:15
What's the deal with Tyson Ross?
Jason Martinez
5:16
If all goes well in next rehab start, I can see him being activated next week.
Twinsanity'
5:16
Twins will be selling at Deadline or they add a few Pieces to Bullpen & Rotation ?
Jason Martinez
5:17
They're in 1st place. Bullpen should be a priority and they could use another starter. Would help if Glen Perkins comes back healthy. I also like prospect Stephen Gonsalves to help in the rotation at some point, although he got a late start due to injury.
Jays
5:18
So is Justin Smoak for real now? Avg over 0.280, 17 home runs already.
Jason Martinez
5:20
I have a lot of faith in track records. Doesn't mean he won't keep it up this season, but I wouldn't count on him doing it again in 2018. I'd probably project slightly better than what he had typically done pre'17.
Z
5:21
Chance cards get Nolan from Colorado?
Jason Martinez
5:21
0.0
Guy
5:22
Speaking of being for real, how about Aaron Hicks?
Jason Martinez
5:22
He's not this good, but I do think he's figured things out and ready to be a very good MLB regular. He's only 27 yrs old.
Clyde
5:24
Baez or Russell the future Cubs SS?
Jason Martinez
5:24
Hard not to see Russell as Cubs' SS and Baez as 2B for years to come. Both are kids. Despite all the hype and the WS championship, they're still going to go through their struggles. Both are the real deal, though.
CJ
5:25
Chances Faria sticks in the rotation after tonight?
Jason Martinez
5:25
Decent. I don't think they'll rush Matt Andriese back from the DL if Faria has a good start. So far, so good ... 3 IP, ER, 2 K.
Andersen
5:26
Do you see Josh Donaldson getting traded this deadline? If so, which team do you think is mostly likely to acquire him?
Jason Martinez
5:27
Despite slow start, Blue Jays are in the pennant race and are good enough to stick around. I think Donaldson stays in '17 and the Jays will at least explore a trade this offseason.
Ryan
5:28
Any thoughts on Allen Cordoba? What is his upside?
Jason Martinez
5:30
Kid has no business doing what he's doing in the Majors right now. I think he was in short-season Johnson City last season! With that said, he wasn't ranked as a top prospect so his upside isn't all that high, but I think he can be a very good MLB regular. My guess is that he plays SS in AA or AAA next season so the Padres can figure out if he has a future there.
Jacob
5:31
Are the diamondbacks active in the trade market with how their farm system is if they are still in it by july?
Jason Martinez
5:32
I can see them adding a late-inning reliever. Don't know if they have enough farm system talent/depth to pull off a major deal.
Andy
5:33
Does Tyler Beede + Chris Shaw + Austin Slater get the job done for Christian Yelich? I know the Giants won't compete this year but they'll still need an outfielder for 2018 and beyond
Jason Martinez
5:33
Not even close. That deal would have to start with an elite prospect and the Giants don't have one.
Connor
5:35
When does nick WILLIAMS come up?
Jason Martinez
5:35
September call-up, maybe earlier if the Phillies can move Kendrick and/or Saunders at the deadline.
Beltre
5:37
Although very unlikely, what pieces(MLB or Milb) would it likely take for Texas to acquire Yelich?
Jason Martinez
5:38
They don't have it. For a player like Yelich (young star with years of club control), I'd recommend taking a look at a Top 100 prospect list ... (here's MLB.com's http://m.mlb.com/prospects/2017) and starting with a player in the Top 25-30. That's what it would take just to get the conversation started.
Mike
5:39
When will Moncada get called up? How much of a factor will he be right away?
Jason Martinez
5:40
I'll guess no later than mid-July. I think he'll have some amazing weeks and some horrible weeks. Just a kid. Still has some holes in his game. But he's a really talented kid.
Rizzo
5:40
When should we expect to see Eric fedde In the majors?
Jason Martinez
5:41
Pretty quick since they moved him to the bullpen. I imagine that they'd want to give him a look before deciding if they really need to acquire some relief help by July 31st.
Willy
5:43
When is Torres up with the big club? Will Frazier join him this season?
Jason Martinez
5:43
Sounds like they're not counting on Torres, but I wouldn't rule it out. If he starts crushing the ball in AAA and Headley continues to struggle, they'll need to either upgrade via trade or give Gleyber a chance. Less of a chance for Frazier, though. OF is already crowded.
Aussie Giants Fan
5:47
G'day mate, thinking the Giants look to retool for next year, surely they will look to upgrade LF? Think they will go after JDM? Or maybe Cain and push Span over?
