Does Chris Young, Tyson Ross, and Robbie Erlin make the Padres' OD rotation?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:19
Ross is close to locking up one of the spots. I've had him penciled in as the No. 2 since he signed and he's making me look good so far. Young is making a case for at least a bullpen spot. Erlin has an option remaining and can use the time in AAA. Hasn't pitched much in the last 2 years.

Care to handicap Cards closer/bullpen structure?  Is Matheny really going to head into season without making a decision?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:20
If Gregerson has to start the season on the DL, Dominic Leone will be the closer. If he converts his save opps while Gregerson is out, I think he keeps the job.
5:21
If Gregerson makes it back in time, I think Matheny uses a true committee with Gregerson, Lyons, Leone and I think there's a decent chance that they roll with it for a while.

Finnegan more suited for bullpen or remain a starter?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:24
I think he can be a good starter or a great reliever. The Reds can probably afford to give him some more time to get healthy and prove himself as a starter before they officially move him into a relief role.

Any chance the Dodgers get Holland on the cheap to replace Morrow?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:26
Not sure how cheap it would have to be. They haven't really been connected to any potential setup men this offseason. I'd feel a lot better about their team if they had a better option than Baez in the 8th inning.

Valencia a utility player for the O’s season? Opening Day?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:27
Probably. I have him there ... https://www.rosterresource.com/mlb-baltimore-orioles/ I can see him playing vs LHP (platoon with Rasmus).
Tyler Lyons
5:28
Hey, I think I have the stuff to close!
AvatarJason Martinez
5:30
I'm a fan. But a lefty reliever who can get out right-handed hitters and pitch multiple innings is just as valuable in a non-closing role. Same with Andrew Miller, Alex Claudio, Josh Hader.

What do you think where John Jaso ends up?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:31
Pretty sure he's retired and is sailing around the world.

Any rumors on Lackey?  How about Peavy?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:32
Haven't heard anything on Lackey. I'm guessing he'd rather retire than take an MiLB deal. Peavy is hoping to be ready for the Majors by May or June, I believe. I know he was planning on having a showcase soon.

Think I make it through the year without a DL stint?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:34
I couldn't say with confidence that any pitcher will avoid the DL. Except for Mark Buehrle if he wasn't retired.

5:38
For fun, please have some speculation as to whom the Padres ought to try and acquire in a year or two at third base.
AvatarJason Martinez
5:41
Ask me again next week. I do think adding a 3B, probably a 1-year rental, will be the final offensive piece to their next playoff team. I just haven't done enough research to know who the options could be.

5:41
Do you see the orioles signing Alex Cobb ?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:43
Sure. Orioles and Brewers have to be the leading candidates. Mike Wright is currently the O's No. 5 starter.

Who is first in line if a Dodgers SP goes down?... Brock, Walker, or someone else?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:45
Depends on if it's a short-term or long-term opportunity. For an elite prospect like Buehler, Dodgers would probably wait until there was a job that was possibly his for good. If not, they'd go with someone like Brock Stewart.

Greg Allen going to make some noise in the Indians Outfield?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:47
I think he has a decent chance at making the Opening Day roster if Brantley and Guyer both start on the DL. I don't have high expectations for him in '18, though. He has 300 PAs in AA and he was just OK. Needs another full season in the upper minors.
Giant fan forever
5:48
What are the chances the Giants release Hunter Pence and allow one of their younger hitters a chance to play every day?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:49
I don't think it's happening anytime soon. But if he's struggling badly in June or later, it's a possibility. Mac Williamson looks like a beast this spring. Remember it is spring training, though. Giants wouldn't make a decision of that magnitude based on spring performance.
Hm
5:50
Who wins left field for the padres and who win 2nd and why.
AvatarJason Martinez
5:51
Pirela will be the LF because he's a better hitter than Renfroe and he's not a good enough defender to play 2B. Still up in the air between Asuaje/Spangenberg to be the stopgap for Luis Urias at 2B.

why do i want leonys to bat leadoff! we have mahtook, candelario, UGH
AvatarJason Martinez
5:55
And Jose Iglesias is the No. 2 hitter! I think you're looking at the wrong column. .288 was his OBP last season. Not his batting average.
5:56
Thanks for chatting! I have to get caught up with NFL signings. Wow, these guys don't waste any time.
