Will the White Sox have a closer on May 1st?
AvatarJason Martinez

Sure. It should be Nate Jones' job as soon as they trust him to pitch back-to-back games. I think they'll be cautious with him early on.

Do you think the Twins have a 90 win team & shot at hosting the wild card?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:10
Yep. They're better than last year. Pitching staff is deep and talented. That's a key.

Why not stretch Hader out and work him into the rotation this year?  Seems that with Nelson working on a questionable return, this season is a sort of “let’s see what we have” approach.   I hat to see him in the bullpen if we struggle to give him meaningful outs and our pitching staff is questionable.

They know he's dominant out of the bullpen. They don't know if he can be a reliable MLB starter and they probably didn't think this was the year to find out. They think they can win the division.

Who will lead off for the Marlins?
AvatarJason Martinez

Sounds like they're going with Brinson.

Is Pirela the Real Deal and can he hold off Renfroe
AvatarJason Martinez
5:14
Yes. He's a very good MLB hitter. He's not a good fielder. Renfroe has more power and he's a decent RF, but not as consistent at the plate.  Franchy could be the guy by the end of the season, though.

Why is Colin McHugh not a Brewer. Astros are one of the few teams with SP depth that could stand to upgrade an OF corner position, Brewers have too many OFers, it's practically a match made in heaven
AvatarJason Martinez
5:16
Brewers already have 5 Collin McHugh's. They needed a Jake Arrieta or Lance Lynn, in my opinion.

What a moment for vladdy jr. last night! Chances of him wearing #27 for the blue jays by July?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:18
Of course that happened. I love baseball. It's not out of the question that he reaches the Majors in '18. Dude can flat out hit.

Miguel Olivo?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:19
Yes! Bring him back to KC. Had one of his best seasons there. He can't be older than 42.
DL Rules
5:20
To piggyback off of what you said, Jason, I believe that if a player ends the previous year (so 2017) in the big leagues, then they can't be optioned back to the minors during ST if they are hurt. However, if they are on the 40 and did NOT end the previous season in the bigs then they can be sent down and put on the minor league DL.

Thanks for the clarification. That sounds right.

Angels plan for Otani?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:23
They're pretty much crossing their fingers and hoping he can magically turn things around once the regular season starts. It will be must-watch TV. I hope he doesn't suck. If he does, it's not the end of the world. He's still the best pitching prospect in baseball, even if he's not quite ready.

Do the Giants have enough pitching to contend
AvatarJason Martinez
5:24
The question is whether they have enough to not fall too far behind while MadBum, Samardzija and possibly Melancon are out. If the Giants are within 5-6 games of a playoff spot when those 3 are healthy, they are in very good shape.

Will Trayce Thompson land anywhere significant?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:26
I'm thinking Marlins or White Sox, which is significant because it's his best shot at getting at-bats.

Can you tell me honestly where do you think Adam Lind is going to sign ? Also do you think he would have to settle for a minor league deal?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:29
He'd have to settle for a MiLB deal at this point. If Bird's injury is going to keep him out for longer than 6-8 weeks, it makes sense to return to the Yankees. But you never know. Injuries happen. He's probably the best available and most baseball-ready 1B/DH.
So called experts
5:30
So called experts picking  Redsox winning Al east because of their pitching. Yankees will be wildcard team because they Have subpar pitching.
AvatarJason Martinez
5:31
Biggest question (maybe the only question) for both teams is starting pitching depth. Neither team is very deep. Red Sox are already being tested.
5:34
OK, gotta run. This wraps up our chats for the 2017-18 offseason! These are always fun. Thanks to everyone who participated. Back next Wednesday to discuss all the players who are off to horrible starts and should be benched, traded, optioned, DFA'd.
