They're open to trading any of them now. Just a matter of getting the right offer. Doubtful that it's going to happen before the season. They'll be hoping that there is more of a market a few months from now.

What are you thoughts on a Whit Merrifield trade? I think trading him would make room for Mondesi at second.

I think he's more of a June/July trade candidate. He'd fit on any contender because of his versatility and his value will be high as long as he matches what he did last season. Still not much of a track record so teams might not be willing to offer much this offseason.

Do you see any chance of the Tigers picking up the lower level starting pitchers on the remaining list of available players
AvatarJason Martinez

You mean Cobb or Lynn? Seems like they're not interested in spending much $ or improving their team. With all the FA values available this offseason, they signed Leonys Martin and not one relief pitcher. My guess is that they're going to give a lot of their young SPs a chance by mid-season ... Franklin Perez, Ryan Carpenter, Beau Burrows.

So what do you think of the whole notion that the game needs speeding up? Any ways to do it being discussed that actually make sense?

It's a smart business decision. A majority of MLB's customers aren't diehard fans, like me, MLBTR and RR readers. We obviously don't care if the game is 3:00 or 3:15. But there are millions of casual MLB fans that they would like to convert to our level and it doesn't help with so much inactivity during the game.
5:16
My opinion is that more HR/strikeouts and less balls in play are what has slowed the game down. It's also why so many free agent hitters couldn't find jobs because there are so many good MLB hitters now.

Do you think Moustakas still has upside that he hasnt reached? He was a top prosect and is still young? Why dont any teams believe in him?
AvatarJason Martinez

I think last season was close to his peak. He can be a very productive 3B for 4-5 more seasons. It was just a bad offseason for a free agent third baseman.

Gregerson gets hurt. Do the cardinals sign Greg Holland?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:21
I don't think Gregerson is the guy that's been standing in the way of the Cardinals signing Holland. Unless it is forces him to miss a month or more of the regular season, I don't know if it changes their willingness to meet Holland's asking price.
Andujar
5:22
Your comment about Wade at 2B sounds reasonable. On the other hand Drury at 2B could mean Andujar at 3B. Wouldnt you rather have Andujar than Wade in the lineup?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:22
I'd rather have Andujar get at least a half-season in AAA and Gleyber in the Majors by May 1st.

Do you still see Dillon Peters making the Marlins rotation?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:25
He's not helping himself much, although there aren't a lot of other options.  Jacob Turner could beat him out.
Andujar
5:26
Can he play 3b?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:27
Gleyber? He can play 3B, but I believe he'll be their 2B.

Any thoughts on Tito naming Mike Clevinger to the starting rotation to start the year?
AvatarJason Martinez

Salazar's injury made it an easy call. Even if he began the season in AAA, I had him penciled in for 25+ starts. If Salazar was healthy, it would've been a tough call. Tomlin would've moved to the 'pen and either Belsile, Goody or Olson (all very good in '17) would'n't have made the Opening Day roster.

Does Trace Thompson make an Mlb roster after the Dodgers inevitable release him?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:32
I think a team like the White Sox or Marlins would take a flyer on him and see if he can return to his 2015-16 form.

5:33
Who is the nats 5th starter
AvatarJason Martinez
5:34
A.J. Cole right now. It will be Tanner Roark if they sign Arrieta.

Phillies 81 wins. Over or under?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:34
Exactly 81 wins.
5:35
If they sign Arrieta or Lynn, I think it will be closer to the 86-89 range.

Is Alex Jackson the future behind the dish for the bravos?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:36
If he has a good season in AA, I'd say he has a pretty good chance. William Contreras (Willson's brother) could also be in the mix in a few years.

5:37
Do you think either Keon Broxton or Jesus Aguilar get dealt before Opening Day?  And if so, where might the best places for them be?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:38
Broxton is a maybe. I think Aguilar will get DFA'd. He doesn't deserve it, but not much value for a backup 1B.

5:40
How attractive would Ryan Merritt be to other teams if he doesn’t make the 25 man roster for the Indians and gets placed on waivers?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:41
There should be a lot of interest, but I don't know if the offers will be enough to entice the Indians. He has value to them as a swingman. If they can't depend on Salazar to stay healthy, he is even more valuable.

Who is Atlanta's closer in 2018 going to be
AvatarJason Martinez

Arodys was really good in '17. It's his job to lose.

Do you think Kennys Vargas still with the club by Opening Day?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:45
Barring an injury, I doubt it. I'm surprised he didn't try to go to Japan this offseason. Not sure if that's still a possibility.

Jason you're by far my favorite of the mlbtr writers. That should up my chances of getting my question answered. Who are your dark horse teams from each league to make the playoffs?
