MLBTR Live Chat With Jason Martinez: May 31, 2017

Hey everyone. I just witnessed the Padres sweep the Cubs in a 3-game series. It really is true that you can't predict baseball. It's also true that the regular season is a marathon. The Cubs are giving the other NL Central teams a headstart and not one of them is taking advantage. Sort of bold prediction: Cubs will win the division by 15 games.

Who's been your favorite rookie to watch this year so far?
Jason Martinez
4:33
I mostly watch the Padres. Margot is impressive and Renfroe is starting to figure it out. Kind of like this Franchy Cordero kid, too. He can fly.
Anthony
4:34
What's happened to the Giants and Cubs this year?
Jason Martinez
4:34
Cubs have the World Series hangover. Lots of guys not playing well at once. But, as I mentioned in the intro, their division rivals aren't taking advantage. They could all catch fire at once.
4:35
Giants aren't the same team without Bumgarner. Still capable of hanging around. If they're still hanging around when MadBum returns, they can make things interesting. Can't count out a veteran team with so much post-season experience.

Do you think David Paulino will stay in the rotation?
Jason Martinez
4:36
I think he kind of has to stay in the rotation with Musgrove and Morton on the DL. Pretty good start today, too. That helps.
Jeff Cockerham
4:36
Do you think the Braves cut colon ?
Jason Martinez
4:37
Getting to that point, but don't think they're quite there yet.

4:37
Could the Pads get a top 50-75 prospect back for Hand if he keeps this up for another 2-3 weeks? Lowered his ERA to 1.76 today.
Jason Martinez
4:38
That's asking a lot, but I don't think it's out of the question. 2 1/2 years of one of the top lefties in the game. Would need to be a team that has 4-5 Top 100 guys, though.
Mets
4:39
With Cespedes, Lugo and Matz coming back this week, and the lineup clicking, can we challenge the Nats for the East?
Jason Martinez
4:39
Don't think anyone is catching the Nats. Their roster is too talented and the bullpen is starting to come together with Koda as the closer. Mets should be happy if they can stay within reach of a Wild Card.
Charles in Charge
4:40
Is Socrates Brito good enough to be a started in the majors?
Jason Martinez
4:41
I think he's at least good enough to be given a chance to prove it. If he can make it back from the DL soon (he's on a rehab assignment), he could get a look before Pollock returns.
Hank Chen
4:43
Could you speculate on when the Braves will call up their pitching prospects (e.g., Sims, Newcomb)?
Jason Martinez
4:43
I think they go with Sims if Bartolo doesn't turn things around in the next start or two.
Chase
4:44
Which contract would you rather be stuck with, Stanton or Grienke?
Jason Martinez
4:45
Stanton. HRs put fans in the seats, especially from Giancarlo. Greinke is approaching his mid-30's. Easy call.

4:46
Would Hosmer or Abrue fit the rangers if they are a wild card team?
Jason Martinez
4:47
If they wanted to bench Napoli at some point or platoon him, I think Gallo moves to 1B. Ronald Guzman is also an option. He's having a good season in AAA. If they were to add a bat, more likely to be an OF.

Nick Williams still strikes out too much and doesn't walk enough, but given the state of the Phillies, is it time to give him a chance to play in the majors?
Jason Martinez
4:49
That 7 BB/54 K ratio is brutal. Similar to Hunter Renfroe last season. I think they'll be patient with him, but would be good to get him at least 2-3 months of regular at-bats against MLB pitching. So maybe after the trade deadline.
Tyler Schultz
4:50
Is there any chance that the tigers will finally sell this year?
Jason Martinez
4:50
100% chance if they're out of the playoff hunt at any point in July. Let's keep our fingers crossed because that would make for some interesting trade rumors.
KY
4:51
What about Lament?
Jason Martinez
4:53
Lamet was throwing 95-98 MPH with decent secondary pitches. Most importantly, he was a strike-throwing machine against the Cubs. Seemed like every hitter was 0-1 and 0-2. He could be a dominant late-inning reliever down the road, but looks like he'll get every chance to start.
JR Ewing
4:55
Is JP Crawford as bad as his surface stats seem to imply?
Jason Martinez
4:55
Not at all. Only 22 yrs old. Not every prospect figures it out right away. He struggled in AAA last season and I don't think he dropped a bit in the Prospect Rankings. Still Top 10 in baseball, I believe.
Tyler
4:56
Your a padres guy...who do you think the padres will go for at #3 this year (who do you want)?
Jason Martinez
4:56
Hunter Greene. If he's not there, I think they'll get Mackenzie Gore. I'd be good with either of those guys.
Ryan
4:57
Do you think the suspension is going to hinder Preller from getting a good return on Hand and Solarte?
Jason Martinez
4:57
Not at all. He doesn't have to trade them. As long as they're pitching well and playoff contending teams need late-inning relief help, Preller has all the leverage.
CubanProdiG
4:58
When can we see Ketel Marte back in the bigs?
Jason Martinez
4:59
Not sure how he fits onto that roster right now. Owings and Drury are having good seasons. Marte has been great in AAA. Good problem to have.
Justin

Do you think Glasnow ever figures it out?
Jason Martinez
5:00
Oh yeah. Seems like the kind of guy who takes longer to figure it out. Unfortunately, they needed him in the majors. They were hoping someone like Drew Hutchison could've stepped up and kept a spot warm for him.
Nick
5:02
Can the Phillies get something of value for tommy Joseph who's cheap and under contract to make room for Rhys Hoskins
Jason Martinez
5:02
I think so, but not sure how likely it is to happen in-season. Not sure there are enough teams looking for a 1B/DH. His value won't dip much, if any at all, if the Phillies shop him now or in the offseason. So they can set the price high and not budge.
