MLBTR Live Chat With Jason Martinez: May 9, 2018

Jason Martinez
4:36
Welcome! Dustin Fowler is in the big leagues and he's all set to make his 1st start against his former team (at Yankee Stadium on Friday) and (probably) against Sonny Gray, the pitcher he was traded for last July. Amazing but not surprising if you've been following baseball long enough.
Dayton Moore
4:36
How much longer can I hold back Adalberto Mondesi?
Jason Martinez
4:38
He was one of the best infield prospects in baseball and was clearly not ready for the Majors at age 20-21. Important to make sure that when he's called up next time, he's given a starting job at one position and, hopefully, he's up for good.
4:39
He's already proven himself in AAA so it's not really a matter of calling him up because he's hitting in AAA now.
Jalen Beeks
4:39
Hey bro, when can I come up to the big leagues?  Not sure if carpal tunnel is my ticket, but it would make a good story.
Jason Martinez
4:41
It would probably take an injury to open the door (Price's injury could do it), but that's out of your control. You are killing it in AAA. I'm sure you already know this, but you have a 1.72 ERA with 8 BB/52 K in 31.1 IP. Wow.

Jason hello and thanks for doing a chat session during games, just be hard!  Tyler Austin can't get enough at bats to be a fantasy contributor once Greg Bird comes back.  Right?
Jason Martinez
4:43
Probably not. He picked a bad time to go into an 0-for-14 slump with Bird about to start his rehab assignment.
Sergio Q
4:43
Why did Franchy Cordero go invisible in most scouting top 100 prospects lists, I mean high ceiling in terms power/speed, 23 years old, over 900 OPS in AAA, led the entire minor leagues in triples, what am I missing?
Jason Martinez
4:48
Ability to make adjustments might be the most difficult thing to judge before. I saw him play last year and early this season. He looked really bad on most at-bats. I didn't think he was going to stick this season. But a few weeks later and he looks like a completely different player right now. 7 BBs and 7 Ks in his last 31 plate appearances. That is why he's going to be the "Franchyze".

Austin Riley by August 30th or nah?
Jason Martinez
4:50
He just needs to keep hitting and he'll probably get the call if the Braves aren't getting enough production out of Bautista/Camargo. I don't think they're counting on him this season, but it would be a bonus. He's only 21. I wasn't expecting him until 2019.
Just a random person
4:50
Is matt Kemp a good surprise for the dodgers?
Jason Martinez
4:52
For sure. It would've been a pleasant surprise if he was just a productive platoon player. But he's played everyday (mostly in RF with Puig out) and has been one of their best hitters.  Most people were predicting that he'd be released before the season started.
Jerry Dipoto
4:53
How about Big Maple?
Jason Martinez
4:54
I only saw the 9th inning. Dude was throwing 100 MPH! Does he always do that?
The Franch Friar
4:55
Chances the Padres get no hit a second (or third) time this year? Even Hellickson had a chance last night...
Jason Martinez
4:57
Always a chance. I've seen them get no-hit 3 times in person (A.J. Burnett, Bud Smith, Tim Lincecum) and I was there yesterday when Hellickson almost did it.
Billington
4:57
Chad Green is the best Yankees RP well aside from Chapman that is, agree?
Jason Martinez
4:59
I wouldn't compare him with Betances/D-Rob until he had a much bigger sample size in high-leverage games. He's really good, though. Would've been interesting to see if his success would've translated back in a starting role. But he's probably fine where he is. Lots of value with multi-inning relievers.
Tony

I realize that his OBP is over .400, but do you have any thoughts on Bryce Harper coming into today hitting in the .230s regarding this season, how he’s being pitched or his impending free agency?
Jason Martinez
5:01
Just from Monday night's game, I can tell you that he looks fine at the plate. He absolutely scalded the ball 4 times (check statcast for proof) and all 4 were caught. They'll start falling.

5:01
Do you have any news on Alex Reyes? Us Redbirds would really like him back
Jason Martinez
5:02
He's starting a rehab assignment today or tomorrow. Pitchers returning from TJ surgery often have setbacks so I wouldn't get hopes up for a return any sooner than mid-June and possibly closer to the All-Star break.
Tony Gwynn!
5:03
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MR. PADRE!   Fun Fact: 23 players, including Stanton, Judge, Goldschmidt, JD Martinez, and Justin Upton, have stuck out more times this year than Tony's WORST year (40).  Greatest hitter ever!
Jason Martinez
5:04
3 birthdays I always remember: my son, my daughter, Tony Gwynn. Seriously.
Matt
5:05
Royce Lewis moving up on mid season prospects lists?
Jason Martinez
5:08
Yeah, I think so. I believe he was in the 20s in most publications and could be in the Top 10 next season. Hard to rate the previous year's draftees since they haven't played too many games so they're always capable of making the biggest jump after their first full season.
Angels Prospects
5:09
Jo Adell, Brandon Marsh, Griffin Canning....people are going to start catching on, right?
Jason Martinez
5:09
Oh yeah. They went from one of the worst before last season and now probably closer to middle of the pack. One more good draft and they'll be in very good shape.
Sasser's Tobacco

Do you consider it a problem that so few MLB games are on FOX for those of us who don't have cable? Baseball may have the smallest number of games on national TV among the four major sports even with a much longer schedule...and definitely less televised than golf, NASCAR and soccer as well. It doesn't seem like our national pastime when you look at it this way...
Jason Martinez
5:13
The more baseball on TV, the better. I grew up in the 80s and got hooked on baseball watching Padres, Dodgers, Braves, Cubs games. I don't know if that would've happened if I couldn't watch them on TV.  They should also bring back "This Week In Baseball".
5:14
And a 1 hour show of only bloopers.
Curse of the Andino
5:14
Will Buck Showalter make it the entire season as the Orioles manager?
Jason Martinez
5:14
No chance.
Billy Beane
5:15
Fowler is up. Barreto could be next. ...maybe LAD can use Lowrie?
Jason Martinez
5:15
He's definitely going to be a valuable trade chip. Dodgers need a SS, though. Lowrie hasn't played there in a few years.
Fonseca
5:16
Should I pick up and hold Eloy Jiménez? How long should I expect to wait? 12 team league
Jason Martinez
5:17
He has a decent chance of a mid-season call-up and should be in the Majors by early '19. And he can rake. Not sure if that answers your question.
That Girl
5:17
What do you think of the Reds taking on Matt Harvey?  Sure surprised me!
