How long do you think it will take for the marlins to rebuild and make a playoff run?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:29
3-5 years should be the expectation. Ownership needs to be patient.

Highest ceiling player that will be taken in this years rule 5 draft?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:33
One interesting name for me is catcher Max Pentecost, the 11th pick in the '14 draft. Missed a lot of time due to injury so I'm not sure if he just didn't have enough time to prove himself to the Jays or if they didn't protect him because he didn't show that he could be a good defensive catcher.

When will the first domino fall in this slow offseason.
AvatarJason Martinez

I'll guess early Friday morning and then it won't slow down for about a month.

What would an A's trade look like in terms of prospects for guys like Yelich or Ozuna
AvatarJason Martinez
5:38
2 top prospects would start the conversation in either case. And I think those two prospect would have to come from this group ... Franklin Barreto, Jorge Mateo, Dustin Fowler, A.J. Puk, Grant Holmes, James Kaprielian
M. Hazen

Is sherfy my closer moving forward or should I bring back the Fernando experience
AvatarJason Martinez
5:40
Archie Bradley would likely be the guy if they didn't sign/trade for another closer. In any case, I think they need another late-inning guy and not count on Sherfy for anything more than 7th inning duty. Not enough of a sample to trust him with a higher-leverage role just yet.

Do you see the Phillies in on Jake Arrieta as some have reported?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:41
I do. Adding a frontline SP is necessary to get them into playoff contention, in my opinion.

Where does Carlos Santana wind up?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:42
I think the Astros would be a nice fit. That's my pick.

Why aren't the Cubs interested in re-signing Jay and using him in a leadoff/ CF platoon?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:45
It's time to give Almora a shot to play everyday. Or Ian Happ. And Jay will have a better shot to play regularly on a few other teams.

Hi Jason. Love the work you guys do at MLB Trade Rumors! If the Mariners don’t spend big money on Lorenzo Cain (see Jon Jay) or Santana or Hosmer (see Healy), do they spend the money on a pitcher?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:50
They already traded for Healy to likely be their regular 1B and sounds like they could sign Jay soon. Both of those moves, low-cost and early in the offseason, would tell me that they're positioning themselves to spend $ on one of the top SPs.

Will Buehler be in starting rotation on opening day?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:52
Doubtful. I think the plan is to have him in the Triple-A rotation in April. If he's progressing and they have a need for him early in the season, he'll get the call. If not, I think he could play a significant role in the bullpen at some point during the season.

Who says no? Chris Archer to the Cubs for Ian Happ, Victor Caratini, Adbert Alzolay and a low-level pitcher.
AvatarJason Martinez
5:55
That's a pretty strong offer, but not good enough for 4 years of Archer in his prime with a team-friendly contract.

Stick with Giles or will Astros trade for established closer?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:59
Maybe Zach Britton or Raisel Iglesias would push Giles into a setup role. Of the free agents, Davis and Holland would do the same. I think Brad Hand is a perfect fit, though. Wouldn't necessarily push Giles out of the closer's role, but I think he'd take a lot of his save chances.

Would not be surprising to see the Yankees shopping Starlin Castro and/or Chase Headley midseason with Gleybar Torres and Miguel Andujar almost ready.  Who might be a fit?
AvatarJason Martinez
6:01
I wouldn't be surprised if either is shopped this offseason.

6:01
Which 2B will cost me the least in prospects in a trade?
AvatarJason Martinez
6:03
One year of Ian Kinsler won't cost a whole lot. Same for Jonathan Villar, who is coming off of a bad season.

How do the Yankees get Ellsbury off the books? Looks like the odd man out in the outfield
AvatarJason Martinez
6:07
Bad contract for another bad contract. Can't think of one off the top of my head that the Yankees would value as much as Ellsbury as their 4th OF. Ask me again next week and I'll have a good answer for you.

Gotta run. Thanks for chatting. Enjoy the holiday and let's hope that the offseason signings/trades/rumors will finally start to pick up immediately after.
