MLBTR Live Chat With Jason Martinez: November 7, 2018

I think they'll use their resources on starting pitching. As good as they were last season, they can easily be a 90+ loss team if they can fill the rotation with some more reliable options. Therefore, could make more sense to bring back Lucroy or maybe someone like Matt Wieters or Kurt Suzuki (reunion!) with Sean Murphy a possibility to join the mix by mid-season.

Paul Goldschmidt, If ARI does move him.... where is best landing spot for him?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:26
I'd guess NYY for prospects and Greg Bird being part of the return to Arizona.

Are you going to be at the winter meetings? Would love to sit down and chat
AvatarJason Martinez
5:28
Pretty sure I will be. I'll tweet out my plans a few times before and during in case anyone wants to meet up.
Zaidi
5:28
Do I dare kick the door in by signing Harper or Machado?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:31
The good thing about being new to a job is you're given a few years to make it your team. Throwing so much $$$ at one guy doesn't seem like it would be Zaidi's preference. I don't think they'll go full rebuild, especially as long as Bochy is there, but Zaidi will want to rebuild that farm system and look to build a perennial contender again in 2-3 years.

Edwin Diaz to the Red Sox... Looks like a great fit with the Red Sox losing some RP. What would the return need to be for the mariners from the Sox?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:32
Whatever it is, the Red Sox probably don't have it. They have some interesting pitching prospects who can break out into the Top 100 in the next year or two, but they don't have the prospects to headline that type of deal.

What would it take to have manny at 3 tatis at ss Urias at 2 Hosmer at 1?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:35
They'd have to let Manny play SS so Tatis would probably change positions immediately and plan on being the team's starting 3B when he's ready. I think Manny is getting 10 years and somewhere between $350-$400MM with some opt-outs. Not sure Padres are going to compete if NYY and a few other big-market teams are willing to pay up.
Rock Star GM
5:36
With the roster issues the Padres have this offseason, could we see another Rock Star GM  offseason/winter meetings from AJ Preller?  Outfield overcrowded, no starting pitching, SS/3B(?), and the Rule 5 issues all come to mind.
AvatarJason Martinez
5:38
I'm expecting a busy offseason for Preller, although he has a lot better farm system to work with this time and probably more payroll flexibility. They also have a full 40-man roster, only a few DFA obvious DFA candidates and this is my list of Minor Leaguers who they might want to add to the 40-man ...
Austin Allen, C
Ty France, 3B/1B
Michael Gettys, OF
Edward Olivares, OF
Anderson Espinoza, SP
Nick Margevicius, SP
Chris Paddack, SP
Emmanuel Ramirez, SP
Travis Radke, RP
Gerardo Reyes, RP
Hansel Rodriguez, RP
5:39
They can't add all those guys, but Preller will need to move some MLB players in trades to make room for some. So I'm expecting a few trades prior to the deadline to add to the 40-man (November 20th).

Any truth to the rumors of the Rays signing a DH free agent?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:41
Yes, because not too many teams have the space for a DH-only player and the Rays appear to have a need. Unless they really love Ji-Man Choi as their DH, Nelson Cruz would be a nice fit there.
Mike
5:42
Will Verdugo play every day in 2019?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:43
Dodgers would need to make a trade to open a spot for him. Always a chance he's traded to a team that gives him a starting job. He still has options and he's only 22, though. Dodgers probably aren't in a hurry to send him elsewhere.

5:44
Would it make sense for the Tigers to sign DJ LaMahieu?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:46
I'm sure he would be a good fit for the Tigers because he's a really good player and probably won't break the bank in free agency. He's not blocking any of their young players from developing unless they really want to see Dawel Lugo there everyday. But I don't think LeMahieu would see the Tigers as a good fit for him. He's be a solid addition on a contender where he can play Gold Glove defense and hit at the bottom of the order.
Brodie Van Wagenen
5:47
Should I seriously consider Cody Allen as an option for Closer?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:49
I definitely wouldn't pay him like a closer because he wasn't very good last season and he has a ton of mileage on that arm. Would be a good addition at the right price as the 7th/8th inning guy.

Anyway I trade Vlad, Cavan or Bo?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:52
Vlad Jr. has to be as close to untouchable as any prospect can be. I can see anyone other position player prospect going in the right deal. They have a lot of good infield prospects. If they want to get back to playoff contender, they might have to make a bold trade. That could mean trading one of their best prospects not named Vlad.

Bill Chastain published an article on MLB.com today saying "A trade for Realmuto would have a similar cost to what acquiring Zunino would require."

So… what would it take to get Mike Zunino?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:56
They both have 2 years of control, but Realmuto is a legitimate top of the order hitter (1, 2 or 3) and Zunino is a 6th, 7th or 8th hitter who doesn't get on base much, strikes out a ton and can hit 20-25 homers. He has value, but I don't think it's anywhere near Realmuto.

Could the Pirates make a swap for Jean Segura if M’a decide to tank?
AvatarJason Martinez
6:00
Yes. Pirates have enough prospect depth and potential headliners to get that done. I think the Mariners would ask for either Ke'Brayan Hayes or Mitch Keller.
Mike
6:00
What's your projection for Brent Honeywell this year?
AvatarJason Martinez
6:02
Rays will probably take it slow with him. I'd guess 12-15 MLB starts (or whatever they call the guy that pitches the 2nd-thru 7th innings) with a pretty good amount of success. He was, arguably, the best pitching prospect in baseball for a reason. And he was knocking on the door to the Majors when the injury occurred.
Jeff Ala
6:03
Does Gattis back to Atlanta make sense?
AvatarJason Martinez
6:04
Would be a fun reunion but he made 0 starts at an actual position last season so I think he stays in the AL. Would be a nice August trade acquisition to add a power bat to their bench, though.
Brian
6:04
Can the Braves get either Paxton or Kluber without giving up Soroka, Toussaint or Kyle  Wright?
AvatarJason Martinez
6:07
Yes, but that's because they have 5-6 other pitching prospects in that same tier or right behind them. They have a ridiculous amount of pitching depth.
Kershaw’s Daddy
6:08
What do you think about Julio Urias? Future #2-#3 starter?
AvatarJason Martinez
6:09
Sure, I think he still has that potential. Remember that he was the best pitching prospect in baseball a few years back. He made it back from shoulder surgery, which is a relief since some pitchers don't ever recover. Only 22 years old. Dodgers can afford to let him build back his stamina in AAA.
Ronda Rosey
6:10
Could the Blue Jays re-sign Donaldson, Happ, and Estrada and try to make one more run with current group of players?
AvatarJason Martinez
6:13
There are much better fits for Donaldson. Vlad Jr. should be their starting 3B by late April/early May. Happ is definitely a target. Or someone like Happ. I don't think they're writing off the '19 season so I'd expect them to add to their MLB roster and make Stroman/Sanchez/etc. available in July if they're out of it.
Jerry Dipoto
6:15
Which one of my players could I get the most value for?
AvatarJason Martinez
6:17
The ones that they are reportedly not willing to trade (Diaz, Haniger, Gonzales). Aside from those three, probably Segura since he's under contract for five more seasons. Paxton and Zunino have value, but only under contract for 2 more years. Seager is coming off of a bad season so not the best time to trade him.
