I wouldn't say it's a sure thing. But he only has to think he can beat 2 yr, $70MM for his ages 31-32 seasons. Too many teams with a lot of payroll space would be willing to beat that.

Am I off-base in thinking that a reduction in the number of years of team control (as the "solution" to service time manipulation) would be a complete non-starter for ownership in CBA negotiations?  Service time manipulation seems like a problem that mostly affects a tiny minority of minor league players, who are incidentally the group most likely to command disproportionate salaries at some point.

Agreed. I don't think the players have much leverage right now, especially because it's only a few top prospects each year that would have a decent argument. And these guys are going to get paid eventually so stirring things up with their organization might not be worth it. I would imagine that it's difficult to prove without a doubt that Eloy Jimenez and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. belong in the Majors. Teams could always point at something that they need work on (defense).

Where do you believe Bryce Harper ends up?

I'd guess Philly. Trout could sign there in '21 and Harper's buddy Kris Bryant could join them in '22.

Why was it always assumed Ohtani would’ve been out all of 2019 even if he’d of had the surgery when first hurt in early June? Wouldn’t normal TJ protocol have him back in July of 2019 if not earlier if he’d of had the surgery right away? What am I missing?

I always assume 16-18 months for a starting pitcher. Even if they return earlier, it can still take a while to regain command. Arm strength isn't an issue, but it's difficult to return to pre-injury form after missing so much time.
5:52
So if a starting pitcher has TJ surgery once the season starts, there's a pretty good chance they'll miss 2 seasons. Examples from '17 are Michael Pineda, Joe Ross, Drew Smyly. All had a slight chance to return in '18. Ross will make a few starts in September and Smyly could make a few relief appearances. Pineda was shut down.

Do Dodgers address bullpen in off season?  Who you you see them adding?
AvatarJason Martinez
5:56
Oh yeah. Even if Jansen didn't struggle, I would've expected them to be aggressive to fill the 8th inning role. Playoff contenders who have disappointing seasons tend to overreact. Not sure this Dodgers front office will. But if they don't make the playoffs, I could see them spending more than expected for someone like Zach Britton, Jeurys Familia or Andrew Miller.

Odds of David Price opting out?
AvatarJason Martinez

Very low. He's owed $127MM for his ages 33-36 seasons. Can't see any team willing to give that type of contract to a starting pitcher, especially one approaching his mid-30s.

Do you think Matt Harvey would be better in the bullpen? Seems like his fastball/slider combo could play up and he’s struggled the 2nd and 3rd thru a lineup. He could be a solid one inning set up guy if his ego could withstand it.

Not at this point. And I'm not sure what teams would need to see in order to decide that he'd be better in that role. I don't think he wants to do it and I think enough teams would still be willing to give him a chance to start.
6:02
I can tell you that I saw him pitch out of the bullpen twice against the Padres shortly after he was moved out of the rotation. Even though it was garbage time, I was anticipating a bump in velocity. But he was throwing 90 MPH and gave up a HR in both appearances. So I was surprised to see he was back in the mid 90's as a starter a few weeks later. Not sure he's buying into that role. Yet.

With Mallex having a career year he has to be traded at his peak value this offseason? I'm thinking Seattle.

Good call. It would be the time to shop him after the year he's had. And they have the OF depth (Meadows, Kiermaier, Pham).

Should Shohei Ohtani only be used as a hitter?
AvatarJason Martinez
6:07
If he was in his late 20s/early 30s and only signed for 2-3 more years, I would argue that he should just be a hitter. But since he's under contract for 5 more years (most of it at very little salary) and he's only 23, it's worth bringing him back as a SP when he's ready.  Plus, his elbow is already damaged. Most pitchers return to form and avoid a 2nd TJ surgery.

Why doesn't Blake Treinen get any Cy young love?  A ERA under 1 at .91.   right handed batters are hitting .115 off him.  This is Dennis Eckersley numbers.

I'm sure he'll get plenty of votes and end up in the 5th-10th place range. But a reliever isn't winning a Cy Young anytime soon. Too many really good starting pitchers.

Would signing Harper, Kimbrell and Grandal while trading for Fulmer/another SP be a realistic off-season?
AvatarJason Martinez
6:13
They have the resources to trade for a frontline SP.  Not sure how much $ they are willing to spend. I have them at around $50MM going into the offseason. Are they willing to get into the $110-125MM? That's probably where they'd be if they signed those 3 players in addition to arb raises.

Any chance bregman gets any mvp considerations

Yes. He probably won't win it in 2018. But he's in the conversation and  that's a big deal for a guy in his 2nd full MLB season. Dude is gonna have 50+ doubles, 30+ HRs and could be a .300 hitter with a strong finish.
6:16
Gotta run! Thanks for hanging out. Same place and time next week.
