MLBTR Live Chat With Jeff Todd

Jeffrey Todd
2:56
Hey! Let's chat. Ask some questions and we'll get going shortly.
Steven
2:59
I am lost for words for jered weaver, he's my favorite pitcher in the game, he's a fierce competitor, has the heart of a warrior with a bulldog mentality, is it time for him to call it quits. but he
he's only 33 years old
Jeffrey Todd
2:59
Look, 33 is really old. (Wait second ... let me see here ... damn, that's exactly how old I am.)
3:00
What I mean to say is, you're right, it really isn't that old. And Weaver shouldn't just give up. He should absolutely keep trotting out there and doing what he can. It's up to the team to decide when to make up an injury to give him a MiLB rehab stint, or cut him loose.
Donk
3:00
Why didn't the Giants try and upgrade over Pagan in LF? Wouldn't it be worth it just to eat the $10 mil?
Jeffrey Todd
3:01
I don't think you cut him loose. The guy was a firmly above average hitter right up til last year.
It makes sense to see what they can get out of him, and Blanco is a solid 4th option to pair with him.
3:03
Now, I could have seen the merit in making a bigger acquisition, but the fact is they already had quite a lot invested in those two players (Blanco is in the 2nd year of his little extension) and there were other needs. Plus, this is a club with some reasonably interesting, MLB-ready prospect types kicking around.
Coppy
3:03
Wise move on Coppy's part. No reason to trade Aybar correct?
Jeffrey Todd
3:05
Wise move to let it be known that you value him and aren't going to just ship him to whoever asks, sure. This is mostly just posturing, of course. But I truly don't think they are interested in just taking a flier on some uninteresting young guy in return. I think they'd rather try to put a winning product on the field rather than go with the really questionable alternatives they have. (They won't rush young players.) Also, there's a pretty decent chance that Aybar shows real quality in the 1st half and nets a nice return at the deadline. So I'd expect they'll hold unless and until a player they really like is dangled.
Mike
3:05
How much do you believe Coppy in saying he would bring up Albies or Smith early regardless of service times?
Jeffrey Todd
3:06
While we're talking Coppy ....
3:07
It's easy to say w/r/t those particular players. Mallex isn't 23 yet and didn't master Triple-A last year. Albies is obviously much younger than that. There probably isn't much of an argument for moving either player up to start the year, even if the Braves are really looking to contend.
So, I don't know whether he's telling the truth, and he might not really even know it himself, ha. It's not a real decision, IMO.
Evans
3:07
What do you think of Kyle Blanks, do you think it is better for the Giants to bring him on as a reserve outfielder on opening day or take a chance on one of Williamson or Parker?
Jeffrey Todd
3:07
To round out the earlier SFG question ...
3:08
My attitude is usually that it makes sense to give a chance to a veteran type -- esp one who is pretty interesting but always hurt, such as Blanks -- while tamping down service time and getting added development from a young player. This holds much, much more true in cases of players who wouldn't be regulars.
Mike
3:09
Did MLBTR hire a new part-time writer yet after posting that opportunity for one last month?
Jeffrey Todd
3:09
The process is nearing the final stages, I believe, but we have not yet hired someone.
Johnny
3:09
Paint me your rosiest picture of the Reds this year...
Jeffrey Todd
3:10
Tune in to today's podcast with C. Trent! I tried to make it look rosy, in some ways, and we talked about a lot of the interesting things going on.
If Mesoraco/Hamilton/some of the young IFs break right, and there is some excess of young starters that make it, the org could be better situated than we think.
3:11
Remember, things change quickly. We'll revisit this when Homer Bailey has a 2.78 ERA over 100 frames later this year. (I mean, that might be a bit optimistic ...)
Donald Trump
3:12
Do you ever wonder if your name is actually Todd Jeffrey and the wrong parents brought you home from the hospital?
Jeffrey Todd
3:12
Are you suggesting that you are my real father? I disavow.
Jeffrey
3:13
Devon Merrero and Brian Johnson for Alex Reyes. Who says no?
Jeffrey Todd
3:14
Let's put this one to rest. There is just no chance the Cards do this. Prospect-for-prospect trades are rare enough as it is, but they aren't going to punt a guy with front of the rotation possibilities to fill in for a few months at SS -- esp when there are better immediate options that can be had for way less.
3:15
I realize Johnson isn't a nothing piece and all, but generally volume for quality only works in prospects-for-veteran type scenarios.
Michael
3:16
Thoughts on Goose Gossage's comments on Bautista?
Jeffrey Todd
3:17
They were hilarious, as was Bautista's response. Obviously I don't agree with Goose, but who cares? It's always fun to hear a legendary dirtbag talk some trash about the new kids. And his fu manchu is still incredibly strong!
Lou Allen
3:17
Where does David Freese finally end up?
Jeffrey Todd
3:18
I really have just no idea. If nothing transpires and he's really forced to just take a roster spot rather than $, maybe the Halos bump Yunel to 2nd. Otherwise ... ??? Might have to wait for an injury.
Jeffrey
3:18
Is Robert Stephenson destined for the bullpen? Or is he still a starter?
Jeffrey Todd
3:19
He'll get every chance to fail as a starter, you have to think.
Michael
3:19
Anyone interested in trading for Bruce anymore?
Jeffrey Todd
3:19
I can't figure it, but C. Trent suggests not to assume he's going to be with the team through the summer. (He had interesting stuff to say on Bruce, generally, as well as the rest of the club. You should listen to the pod, which will go up soon. Sorry for plugging it repeatedly.)
Scott
3:19
What are reasonable expectations for CC Sabathia at this point in his career?
Jeffrey Todd
3:19
None at all.
3:20
By which I mean, you can't really expect anything in particular. It's day to day with him, both w/r/t his ability on the mound and his ongoing battle with alcoholism.
