MLBTR Live Chat With Jeff Todd

Jeffrey Todd
2:16
Hey! Gather round and ask some questions ... we'll get going shortly.
2:18
Just turned on the Phillies-Reds game ... not as much cachet as that matchup would've carried a few years ago, but Carlos Ruiz just hit a bomb. He also looks incredibly old!
Spencer
2:18
Is Trevor Story the real deal
Jeffrey Todd
2:19
Now, I know you know better than to ask. Obviously hitting 4 dingers in 3 games tells us something, b/c some players just can't do that. But he's still got a lot to show.
All said, though, with last year's results, this spring, and the start to the year ... certainly showing there's reason to hope he's the real deal.
Jim
2:19
Where does James Loney end up and how quickly?
Jeffrey Todd
2:20
It's not real clear to me that he's going to go right onto an active roster. Tampa Bay surely would've been glad to cut him loose for basically any cost savings, so if any team really wanted him on their 25-man, it'd have happened a week or two ago.

2:20
What's your favorite overreaction by fans so far?
Jeffrey Todd
2:21
Well, the Greinke one is funny, just because I think some have expectations that are way too high and then we have the opposite swing after the first outing.
Hello
2:21
Are you happy?
Jeffrey Todd
2:21
I'm going to go stare in the bathroom mirror and cry and hug myself. Be right back.
2:22
But yeah, I am - just got to hang out with my little boy this morning, go have a catch with a friend, and now chat with y'all! Not bad.
Yaakov
2:22
Is it possible w the Rockies offense that they could be in the playoff hunt this year?
Jeffrey Todd
2:22
Absolutely.
Possible, that is. I don't think likely ... I'd be pretty surprised, to be honest.
2:23
Still hard to see the pitching holding up, for me.
David F
2:23
With another solid season, what is the likelihood of any team giving Bautista $150 million?
Jeffrey Todd
2:24
That is a very big number for a guy his age. I'm not real sure he has that kind of ceiling unless he does something kinda unprecedented this year. A typical season? I think Tim Dierkes is fairly bullish at 4/120 ... I'm more in the 4/100 camp at this point.
Jacob
2:24
Does 3 years/$45 million sound fair for a Beltre extension?
Jeffrey Todd
2:24
Eh, I think it's a bit light. If Jose Bautista is a 25-30 million a year guy, then Beltre is every bit that as well.
2:25
It is an extension scenario, of course, so work in a discount and maybe it's 3/60-75 range? I think I'd be happy giving him that kind of $$$ given his amazing output and high-floor glove.
Sarah
2:25
Do you believe we are seeing an improved Yasiel Puig?
Jeffrey Todd
2:26
Puig already has a big established ceiling -- as opposed to a sort of hypothetical talent-based one -- so I don't know about improved. But I'm expecting a good year from him.
Jared
2:26
Could Joey Rickard be the Orioles' answer in the leadoff spot?
Jeffrey Todd
2:27
Big ask, though hey, if Odubel Herrera can happen then maybe you can find a top-of-the-order hitter in the Rule 5 these days.
Ben
2:27
Byoung ho park has been swinging at some bad pitches. (Has 1 hit) twins move him down in the line up until he gets comfortable in the bigs?
Jeffrey Todd
2:27
I'm only going to answer this to say: not going to just answer short-sample questions today!
Nate
2:27
Padres fans are sad. Cheer them up.
Jeffrey Todd
2:28
Actually, some short sample starts are more concerning than others. Holy crap, man! Three straight shutouts? That's bound to change at some point, but it's kind of hard to imagine that happening to a really good team.
Slide rule
2:28
Got Steve's take yesterday... care to share your thoughts about Bautista's illegal slide and the vitriol that followed?
Jeffrey Todd
2:29
Without knowing what Steve said (b/c I hear enough outta him already without reading his chats) ...
1) he grabbed dude's foot, clearly, so that pretty much ends the convo
2) it seems that teams have been given ample illustration of the rule, and time to prepare, so it shouldn't be a big surprise -- he clearly didn't stay on the bag
2:30
3) it's kinda ironic to hear people whining afterwards on the basis that they are manly and tough ... if that's the case, buck up, keep quiet, and learn/follow the new rules
Matt Gibson
2:30
Jay Bruce's trade offer? Are the Reds looking to get pitching or offense back for him?
Jeffrey Todd
2:31
They don't care. They'll look for the best package of salary avoidance and young talent available.
Yaakov
2:31
You are wierd
Jeffrey Todd
2:31
That's the thanks I get for answering your question!
Josh
2:31
Is Cano's resurgence the real deal?
Jeffrey Todd
2:32
Not because he has hit a couple home runs, but yeah, returning to a slightly diminished (age) version of himself always seemed plenty reasonable.
