MLBTR Live Chat with Steve Adams -- 2/24/17
powered byJotCast
Steve Adams
2:02
Greetings! Apologies on missing my regular Tuesday chat this week -- I was traveling back from vacation and on a plane at that time... as a makeup...
Spontaneous bonus chat!
Start firing off some questions whilst I rummage up something to drink and I'll get underway in a minute or two
Cliff

Omg omg omg a Friday chat! 🎉🎊🎉🎊🎉🎊🎉
Steve Adams
2:05
It's a festivus miracle!

Where do you see Morneau signing a MiLB deal if nobody gets injured this spring?
Steve Adams
2:06
Rays? Back to the White Sox? Phillies could use a potential lefty bench bat and Terry Ryan is scouting for them now.
Ari
2:06
Can you tell me some things to be excited about regarding the Padres this Spring?
Steve Adams
2:06
You're going to see a full season of Margot, Renfroe, Hedges and several other exciting prospects!
Mozeliak
2:06
If Wacha falters again do we have any chance?
Steve Adams
2:07
Sure, it's not like he's their lone rotation option beyond Reyes. If that were the case, they'd have gone out and added some more pieces. (Or they wouldn't have traded Garcia in the first place)
Weaver, Gant, Lyons, etc. -- there are other arms to choose from.

Surprised at all by the Strop extension? Seems fairly cheap/short for a guy so close to free agency.
Steve Adams
2:08
I'm surprised and somewhat amused since it comes -- what? -- three days after Jake Arrieta asked the media "Why would anyone take a discount six months from free agency?" Ha
But Strop loves Chicago, he said as much to reporters, and it seems like he probably just told his agents "Get me what you can" once the Cubs initiated talks
2:09
Great deal for Chicago -- Strop might've had a case at O'Day/Cecil money with another big season. But he's happy, and he's stinkin' rich either way I suppose. Players Union probably doesn't love it though.

Any update on Joe Blanton? Hard to believe he isn't signed already.
Steve Adams
2:09
Buster Olney just tweeted that Blanton isn't showing an inclination to sign for any less than the $4MM he earned last season. I can't believe that's even a concept, though. Blanton was great in 2016 and I thought he'd find two years with ease this winter
2:10
Seems like he's going to have to take one at this point though

Are the Twins likely to make anymore moves this offseason?
Steve Adams
2:11
If we're talking minor league deals, sure I can see them adding a bullpen arm or something. But nothing major
I do like them as a possible fit for Derek Norris, but I don't see it with Gimenez and Murphy in camp as options
Andrew S
2:12
is there competition at first base for Yanks? Does bird have the best shot?
Steve Adams
2:12
I think it's basically Bird's job to lose, especially with Austin on the shelf for all of Spring Training. Carter can handle the spot if Bird tanks or reinjures himself, but he seems like the strong favorite
Craig
2:13
Ty Blach or Clayton Blackburn first up when Cain implodes ?
Steve Adams
2:13
My bet would be on Blach
Ben F
2:13
What's up with all the SP left on the market?
Steve Adams
2:14
Would that I could provide any kind of explanation.

This offseason has been the weirdest market for arms I can remember. There were none available, and yet no one wanted to pay the few decent ones that were out there. Hammel and Nova both got peanuts compared to most analysts' expectations, and there are still a few useful-ish arms unsigned that seemingly can't even find one-year deals. It's strange.

Bad time for a chat. You're competing with Jeff Sullivan!
Steve Adams
2:15
D'oh! Shot myself in the foot there. Jeff rocks.
Bill
2:16
Where do you see the M's defense finishing the season rankings wise?
Steve Adams
2:17
They'll be one of the better defensive clubs in the league as a whole, but their glovework at shortstop and first base is going to be lacking. I still don't really love the Segura acquisition, because Safeco and playing a position he can't really handle are going to deflate his value, But, I could also be light on Haniger, in which case my pessimism would be unwarranted
Connor
2:17
I've always felt like Colby Lewis has been underrated. I know his peripherals are nothing special, but he has proven for the most part in recent years to be durable and able to eat innings. Are you surprised he's still a FA and do you think he's gonna have to go MiLB at this point?
Steve Adams
2:18
Yeah I think he's a minor league deal guy, but I do think he can help someone. Twins and Padres (Levine and Preller) make some sense for further depth additions, though Minnesota has tons of arms vying for spots in the rotation as it is. (As you'll see in my Twins Camp Battles post later today! Hoorah!)
Pinto
2:18
Do you think Andrew Heaney will ever make it back to full strength and would you be drafting him in a deep dynasty league ?
Steve Adams
2:19
In 2018, sure. Even in a dynasty format, I'm not drafting him this year though. Unless maybe you have lots of DL spots and you can get him with your last pick or two. I don't really know the format, but I'd rather just take an intriguing prospect than a currently injured starter who won't pitch until at least next season
Bobby
2:19
What are the odds of Jake Arrieta taking an extension?
Steve Adams
2:20
The odds of the Cubs offering a seven-year deal seem nonexistent, so I'd put Arrieta's odds of taking an extension equal to that.
Jim
2:20
Why don't the Reds trade Joey Votto?
Steve Adams
2:20
He has a full no-trade clause and doesn't want to leave Cincinnati. Plus they'd have to eat a huge portion of that deal anyway.
