MLBTR Live Chat with Steve Adams -- 4/18/17

Absolutely, unless he gets hurt or completely tanks in the second half. Basically, if he doesn't opt out, it's a really bad thing for the Yankees, because something's gone wrong.
3:34
If he's healthy, he'll clear $100MM in free agency... he's not sticking around for 3/67 with another good year in his back pocket.

Let's say the Oakland Athletics sneak into the Wild Card playoff game. Who is starting that game for them?
Steve Adams
3:35
I don't think it'll happen, but it'd probably be dependent on however their rotation lined up at that given moment.

However, since you're basically just trying to ask who's their best starter for a playoff game (I think), I'd go Manaea if given a choice.
Also, while I don't have a goatee, I do have a beard (or an attempt at one!) for the first time in my life. So nicely done with the name. I'm coming for Jeff's MLBTR beard title.
3:36
(Not really. His is awesome, and Jason can out-beard me as well)

Could the Yanks take advantage of the Giants' abject desperation at LF/CF and leadoff and get something unexpectedly good for Gardner, freeing up the space they need to play Hicks as well? I know it's unusual for something like this early in the season but...
Steve Adams
3:38
Sure it makes some sense, but I believe Gardner would put them over the luxury tax, and they may not be keen on clearing it by a fair margin.
I wouldn't expect anything along those lines in April anyhow -- as you alluded to

Quintana has had two bad innings/starts so far this season ... how long until it is panic time for White Sox fans?
Steve Adams
3:40
If he's pitching like junk at the end of May, sure, get a little antsy. But look at his game log last season -- it's not like he's never had this type of stretch before. He had a 5.51 ERA in June and a 5.30 in September. These stretches happen to almost every pitcher all the time.
We just notice them more in April because of the gaudy early-season numbers

Is Avisail Garcia's .543 BABIP sustainable?
Steve Adams
3:41
The highest single-season BABIP for a qualified hitter since the year 1900 is Babe Ruth's .423 back in 1923.
So. No.

Do you follow/like football and basketball? If so, what are your favorite teams?
Steve Adams
3:42
Basketball more than football. I'm from MN and am a huge Timberwolves fan (was a season-ticket holder when I lived there). I like the Vikings, but I don't follow the NFL all that closely. At this point I probably follow hockey/the MN Wild more closely.
3:43
(Not a good time for the Wild at the moment)

This is an MLB chat, not MLB/sometimes other sports chat.

OH NO OH NO

Can we somehow give (with some small return) Jhonny to the Blue Jays, so he can play the hot corner while JD recovers? Please!
Steve Adams
3:44
Donaldson is out a month at the most... I doubt they're making that type of splash to patch a short-term hole.
Seafan
3:44
Can we expect Haniger to continue his start to season. If so looks like Seattle hit big on trade for Walker
Steve Adams
3:45
He
BAH
3:46
He's been impressive so far -- but the BABIP's going to come down a bit, and the K's will probably always be there to some extent. I don't think he's going to hit near .290 or maintain the .400ish OBP, but yeah he looks like a nice find thus far. Dipoto's been singing his praises since the day of the trade.
Montgomery
3:46
What is your thought on Jordan Montgomery? I think he has a potential to be a solid #3.
Steve Adams
3:47
Probably more of a back-end guy but a nice emergence for the Yankees in a year where they really need some pitching depth.

Is Dyson really done in Texas? kela or Bush? or will dyson get another shot since he may have been hiding an injury?
Steve Adams
3:47
He's not "done" in the sense that they're going to DFA him or anything, but I don't think he's going to be closing games for them anymore unless there are numerous other injuries in the 'pen
James
3:48
Do the Dodgers even want Kazmir to come off the DL? When and if he does, what will he do?
Steve Adams
3:49
By the time he's healthy there'll probably be numerous other injuries in the rotation, be it Hill's blisters, Ryu's shoulder or something else. The depth is nice to have, and I'm sure they'd love him to come back and pitch decently so they can try to move him this winter.
Red Sox
3:49
Did we win the Bucholtz trade?
Steve Adams
3:50
With the benefit of hindsight, of course, but it's not like they knew seven months ago that he was going to tear his flexor tendon two weeks into the season. I thought basically dumping his salary and subsequently failing to add much pitching depth beyond that (sorry Kyle Kendrick) was a curious sequence.

Will J.A. Happ hit the DL?
Steve Adams
3:51
He already did -- noted it earlier
Rich Hill's Blister
3:52
I'm like a horror movie villain. Just when you think you get rid of me... BAM!
What's the answer to getting Hill back on the hill for good?
Steve Adams
3:53
I don't know that there is one. The Dodgers knew this was a possibility when they signed him long-term. On the plus side, even 20 starts of the 2016-17 version of Hill would be worth $16M. He was that good.

Should the rangers send cashner to the bullpen? Gee and Tyson could replace him.
Steve Adams
3:54
They signed him for $10MM with the idea that he'd start for them. They won't put him in the 'pen before they at least see him in the rotation. I do think it's possible that he lands there by season's end, but I don't see it happening in the near future
