"y" is the number of successes that you want to COMPUTE THE PROBABILITY OF  when you use the binomial formula

It y right?!
AvatarGreg Miller
the fourth issue has to do with the total number of successes and that isn't "n" and that isn't "p".. so you'd have to identify it yourself...
While doing that...  you'd have to identify p as .3

Basically.. I am asking you to defend that the case is a binomial experiment by going thru the entire checklist

Well, it's answering  the third of those questions.

In the dentist case study, the first question asks for us to justify that the study has a sampling distribution that is Binomial... it then gives us n=18 and p=.30.    Is this answering the last two questions of whether to use the binomial formula?  3) you must be able to identify a value of p of the interest for your parameter and 4) you must be interested in and be able to calculate the total number of successes.

I should say that that particular use of the binomial formula is the LEAST frequent way we will use it.. normally... we will concern ourselves with a calculation that reads like "three or less" or "more than 9"... something like that.

Thanks for the clarification, its been a while since my last math class

Yes, Ben... exactly.. use the binomial formula three times.. with 2, with 3 and with 4.. inserted for "y".. and then add the results... so yes.. include 2 and 4 in the calculation.

Hi Dr. Miller, I am working on the practice problems you posted, problem 5.61 a-d to be exact. On part D they say "between 2 and 4 times inclusive". Does that mean include 2 and 4 in the summation?

The formal course grade is made up of quizzes and exams only.

The Practice Case Studies won't be turned in.. they are practice for exams only... but they are VERY, VERY important practices for the exams...

Ok.. the first question was left here early today before the room opened.. so let me address that...

Are we turning in the case study practices (homework) anywhere? If so do we need to turn those in to a d2l dropbox or should we email them?
