most doing this kind of law at least.
7:41
good you should because you know they are charging their clients an ungodly rate. lol
AvatarGreg Miller
I will admit I charge lawyers a higher hourly rate than other disciplines...
tongue 1
7:40
That's a little rough, but I think I might could get on board.
7:39
I'd be perfectly ok with colleges giving JUST reading comprehension tests to high school seniors.. and establishing a cutoff by which if a high school senior scored below a certain score, they couldn't be admitted to the university, no matter what the rest of thier application showed.

I was thinking about how this could be used in a torts case or insurance case when I was reading it. lol Bet you could get paid big bucks for finding probabilities for law firms because most lawyers won't be able to calculate it themselves.
AvatarGreg Miller
This is off the main beat.. but...
7:38
Reading is it.  It's the number 1 skill in higher education.. by a looooonnnnnnnnnnnnnnggggggggggg amount.
Kasey
7:37
there is the careful reading again.
AvatarGreg Miller
7:37
That's why the agent wants to use a statistical study.. to show that he's being irresponsible and forcing more claims to be paid out.. costing everyone money
Kasey
Got it.
7:37
ok I am getting it
AvatarGreg Miller
7:37
The agent is Ok with that.. the agent is NOT OK with having to pay out MORE THAN 20% claims due to him using bad materials now...
7:36
The open sentence of the case tells you that in the past "historically", he HAS BEEN responsible for 20% of the overall agent payouts..
This case is to see if that number has increased due to his bad materials
7:35
But, he HAS BEEN in the past already
Kasey
7:35
But this confuses me because it seems like the Ho is saying that the bad roofer is responsible for all 20% of the claims
AvatarGreg Miller
7:34
True. yes... when you are writing Ho and Ha in symbols they only DIFFER by one symbol.
Kasey
7:34
so when stating both the hypothesis they look the same except what is at the end-- like more than, less than, or eqyal to
AvatarGreg Miller
7:34
The step called "p-value" survives and appears in all cases... because it is a "STEP"....
the parameters shift to averages in Cases 2A, 2B and 3A... so there will no longer be parameter p and statistic p-hat beyond Case 1B.
7:33
p, p-hat are only ideas in Case 1A and 1B..
7:32
Yes, but not for long!
Kasey
7:32
so many p's!!!!!
AvatarGreg Miller
7:32
Right, and the parmeter is p, here
Kasey
7:32
yes the hypothesis should be stated in terms of the parameter.
AvatarGreg Miller
Do you see what I am saying.. hypothesis involve a CONJECTURED VALUE for the parameter...
7:31
Ho:  p = .20
7:30
well, I think your phrase is more stating the parameter itself
Kasey
7:30
Ok to clarify, Ho is the fraction of the damaged roof claims that are due to the bad roof company?
AvatarGreg Miller
7:29
You can see from a "legal" point of view how such a statistical analysis might be part of a suit against the roofer...!
If we conclude Ha.. that will establish evidence that their fraction of claims has gone UP..and probably point to their use of poor materials...
7:28
If we conclude Ho.. then there won't be any difference bettween then and now
7:27
Yes.. the agent is trying to show that the percentage of claims due to the "bad" roofing company is now larger than the 20% that it had been in the past.
Kasey
7:26
not a problem. The agent is trying to prove what fraction of the damaged roof claims were due to the bad roofing company?
AvatarGreg Miller
But, send it when you want.. I'll be able to look at it before Zoom hour.
7:24
Ok.. if you send it tonight, I may need to comment in the morning... I monitor this until 9.. and there's a little window in there b/t 9 and 10 were I can usually get to things, but after 10... I am still monitoring email, but usually not for long replies on practice work... just shorter stuff
Kasey
7:23
Ok I'm going to keep working and I think I'll be sending you my answer to the roofing case to review and to practice the pdf scanning deal.
AvatarGreg Miller
7:22
The previous two practice cases had a "<" in Ha, so I wanted to pick one that had a ">" this time
Kasey
