The Buccos are my first sports love.  I've been a loyal fan through thick and thin.  How can I justify my continued loyalty to a team that isn't committed to winning when I live 15 miles from Citizen's bank park?

I understand your pain, I actually asked Commish Manfred that question & he said that he doesn't believe that payroll isn't an indicator of how hard a team is trying. I don't agree with him fully. But I will say that players, coaches, and manager are trying hard every day to win.

Colin Moran looks to me like someone who is a 1st baseman. Is it possible that 3rd is the wrong spot for him and that the Pirates may have found a better option at 1st than Bell?  Maybe Bell would be better in right.
nubyjas wilborn
12:01
We'll see how Moran plays today and the next few days at first. As of now there aren't plans to move Bell. But he's gotta hit and defend better long run.

Were you surprised the Pirates named Kang and Gonzalez already?
nubyjas wilborn
12:02
nah, I was surprised it took that long for Kang at least. They were waiting for Gonzalez to flash the bat. But nah, each is the right choice FOR NOW
JJ
12:02
How does Gonzalez's fielding compare to that of Mercer? What's a reasonable expectation for his batting avg?
nubyjas wilborn
12:03
Better range and arm, but Erik is young.. and Idk, you'd hope he's at least around .240-.250

these guys can’t be serious trotting our Jordan Lyles, Nick Kingham, or Rookie Davis as their #5, can they? Go sign Keuchel already!
Roger
12:03
So I see it being pretty simple who ends up in the bullpen.
So I see it being pretty simple who ends up in the bullpen: BP1 Vazquez
BP2 Kela RHP
BP3
BP4 Kingham (Out of waivers)
BP5 Krick
BP6 Liriano LHP
BP7 Burdi (Rule 5) RHP

Rodriguez or Feliz as well will factor in

Today is opt out day for Frankie!  What do you and/or Brinkster hear?
nubyjas wilborn
12:04
looks like he's going to make the club.
Darrell
12:04
How does Nick Burdi look so far. Are the Pirates going to keep him and do they have to the whole season to retain his rights?
nubyjas wilborn
12:05
He's been fine and yes and yes.

OK...everyone knew who the shortstop and third basemen were going to be this year.   Does the FO really want us to consider it was an open conversation?   Did it look like a real competition?
nubyjas wilborn
12:06
at 3B especially it was, we had no way of knowing what Kang would do after being gone so long.

Both FiveThirtyEight and FanGraphs have articles stating that Trout is underpaid - he should have been paid $79m for last year based on WAR.  How are the Pirates even viable one player is worth more than their entire payroll?
nubyjas wilborn
12:08
This is a question that will define where baseball goes in the next few years. IDK how to answer it. The sport is essentially haves and have nots.
PhillyJake
12:08
" But he's gotta hit and defend better long run."  I assume you mean Moran.  But this can also apply to Bell.
nubyjas wilborn
12:08
both lol

Keller's change-up is steaming garbage and sinker / curveball is terrible pair. Do you think the team is truly banking on him contributing at the major league level this year?
nubyjas wilborn
12:09
They like him.
Burdi
12:09
They have to keep me for first 60 days to retain my rights, at which point I can be optioned and not have to clear waivers.
nubyjas wilborn
12:10
you're right! I didn't explain that clearly, and shouldn't u be resting.
PhillyJake
12:12
Burdi only has to be on the major league roster for 60 days for the Pirates to keep him.
John
12:12
Santana can go on IL for Liriano, but who goes if Cabrera makes team?
Larry in KY
12:13
I've never understood why teams go north with 12 or 13 pitchers with all the rainouts (snowouts) and off days in March/April.  Why not carry one less pitcher and an extra bat?
nubyjas wilborn
12:16
good point, @larry, the Pirates are considering this, wouldn't be shocked if they go 11 and take your advice
12:17
@john off top of my head Nevernauskas

12:20
I think Osuna is not long for this organization and will be the cut when a spot is needed for Melky.
nubyjas wilborn
12:21
I haven't gotten a lot of feedback on Osuna which is telling.
Rick
12:22
Does Feliz go north or does he need to earn his way back after disappointing 2018?  Seems like keeping Burdi means last spot goes to Liriano over Feliz, right?
nubyjas wilborn
12:24
Those bullpen spots will be one of the toughest decisions the Pirates will make. I try to be careful on these, but the team likes where Liriano is right now and it'd be advantageous to keep Burdi, which might leave Feliz out. It's hard to say because nobody has stepped and taken the spot.
Buccobil
12:24
Do you see any chance the bucs get a lefty so before camp breaks?
nubyjas wilborn
12:24
they seem happy with Lyles...
GPT
12:24
Will Reyes always be considered a sub/utility guy?  Seems like all he does is perform with no fanfare.
nubyjas wilborn
12:25
in these days a guy like reyes is worth his weight in gold. as teams keep their bullpens so large you need a guy who can play anywhere.
PhillyJake
12:25
Did Kingham open any eyes with that last start?  Five scoreless innings against Tampa's 'A' team.
