How does a "journalist" as terrible as yourself gain employment by the PG?

Hello, Greg, How are you? And to answer your inquiry, your mom put in a good word for me when I sent my application. She thinks I'm a great journalist. ;) Thanks for reading.

Poor infield defense was a liability last year and it looks to be at least shaky again this year. How does the team square their run suppression strategy built around pitching with their failure to field good defenders?
nubyjas wilborn
1:02
It's still a concern. I think Gonzalez will be better than he was on Monday. Bell is what he is. Kang will be fine at third and Frazier has improved.

Bad day at the office for Frankie in the home opener. Have you ever seen so many pitches hit the backstop? He looked old and slow, trying to backhand instead of moving to get in front of the ball.
nubyjas wilborn
1:02
He'll be better... hopefully.

Will our current double play combination yield half of what we saw last year from Mercer/Harrison?
nubyjas wilborn
1:03
the Pirates sure hope so. I think Gonzalez will be better than he showed on Monday.

He only played there one game this spring and never saw a report but it's gonna be time soon to put JHK at SS and CM at 3rd?
nubyjas wilborn
1:04
I'd slow down on that...

Did you see the strong first start by Glasnow and the way Meadows is hitting. Archer looked good too but they may have given up to soon on Tyler?
nubyjas wilborn
1:05
It's too late to turn back now. But yeah, the Pirates saw a lot of Meadows in spring and he looked good. He's also continued into the spring.

Any update on Gregory Polanco?

On Sunday Todd(Pirates director of team performance) told us he was making steady progress. We will talk to Todd again and I'll have more.

When is the last time super 2 ever affected a Pirate prospect? Pirate ownership always uses this to keep prospects in minors but they either sign them to long term friendly deals or trade them before it would even come into play. Cole’s rookie year perfect example. Kept him in minors citing super 2, then traded before he got too expensive anyway. Keeping him in minors probably cost the pirates the division that year.

They tend to move slow on bringing prospects along. It's different from the current trend where guys come up much quicker. It's not always about cheap.

One game does not make a season....but, the home opener was a disaster. Does that one game set the tone as far as attendance driving fans away or does it matter?
nubyjas wilborn
1:10
I'd hope not.

Is tonight's game a must win? IMO, it's not just the 4th game of 162, but a 'show me' game that the PBC is not likely to have bullpen collapses, typical Pirate bad baserunning and Little League fielding.
nubyjas wilborn
1:11
nah, it's game 4 of 162. That said you'd like to see a good Jameson outing. You'd like to see the bullpen be better. But no it's not a must win.

Can I just gripe?  The Pirates had three positions they needed to address in the offseason - Shortstop, Second Base and fifth Starter.   Each time they addressed it with either an unproven insider or an unproven outsider.  The only one I'll give them a pass on is Frazier at second base.  He played well enough to earn the chance.  But at SS they brought in an unproven Gonzalez to challenge an rookie in Nenwman.  And for the fifth starter they brought in an unproven Lyles to challenge unprovens Kingham and Brault.  In a Vacuum either of these would be an acceptable risk.  But to risk three positions like that is too high of a risk for a team that could have made a move up the division ladder, especially with that starting four.  In the past, they brought in Clint Barmes to mentor Jordy Mercer.  And other like moves.  They should have brought in someone like that for both SS and the fifth starter, taking the risk with Frazier, who earned the right.

Hi, Jake. You make some valid points. I think Gonzalez will be fine tho. We'll see about Lyles.

You followed the team during spring training. Are the shortstops really that bad on defense or were these few games just an outlier
nubyjas wilborn
1:13
outlier...

Do you think the lack of fundamental baseball skills and knowledge is a reflection of rushing guys up through the system? Or are players just not as coachable these days? From not knowing how to slide correctly to consistently missing the cut-off guy to getting tagged out when over-running the bag, it's as if some of these players were never taught the basics of the game.
nubyjas wilborn
1:15
The Pirates don't rush players tho. That being said, I think across baseball fundamentals have decreased which is interesting because kids play more than ever but seem to be picking up bad habits.

Biggest surprise - defensive infield is more suspect than expected.
nubyjas wilborn
1:15
is that a question?

I understand you have not been here that long but for goodness sake quit swallowing all the lies Nutting and his henchmen throw at you! This team is bad for one reason and that's ownership!
nubyjas wilborn
1:17
That's rather brusque, Jim. There are things I agree with Neal, Clint, & Frank on as well as things I don't. I also don't think this is a bad team. They have flaws but there are strengths.

Is it possible Kang-Egon-Frazier-Moran becomes the regular infield?
nubyjas wilborn

Bell would have to be terrible.

Is the level of distrust/malevolence towards management of the buccos surprising to you or about what you expected prior to working here?
nubyjas wilborn
1:21
I knew it was there. But it's more intense than I thought. Anything I write anything remotely positive about the team people are rather rude and even question the P-G hiring me. I'd probably have more people on my side if I came in kicking the team. But I think there's a lot to be positive about and that's sincere.

You obviously saw a lot of Bucs baseball this spring.  Opening day an aberration as it relates to the D and baserunning or a handicap they are going to be dealing with all season?
nubyjas wilborn
1:23
Those are both areas of concern. I've especially noticed because I just came off covering a team that really emphasized being good in those areas. However I don't believe the Pirates are THAT bad.
