Gator, how is it going? Glad to be back in Atlanta?        For conjector's sake how long will it be till PNC reaches Montreal levels?

Home is home! I was able to see my mom and brother and niece and nephews. Saw a few familiar sites. Good times.
And I'm not sure, but there is an erosion of trust that has to be repaired.

well , looks like ANOTHER wasted season--Do you think ownership will at least go all in for next year ? sad really...

as bad as things look now and they do look bad. But it's too early to say the season is wasted. That said, I am curious to see what ownership and management take from this year.

Hello, Gator. What do you think of the first draft pick the Pirates made this year?
nubyjas wilborn
12:01
I'll be honest, I don't know much about him personally. However, baseball people who I trust are high on Priester. So we'll see in a few years.

I'll say this about you, Nubyjas - you have a pretty good personality and you don't take any crud from chatters. Does Mackey talk about the Grateful Dead non-stop?

Ha, he is a dead-head,
nomar fan

He never played for the Pirates that I know of, but will Nomar G ever get in the Hall of Fame?
nubyjas wilborn
12:02
I don't see it.

How is the Pittsburgh Kid Neil Walker doing with the Marlins this year? Could he ever make his way back to PGH to finish his career?
nubyjas wilborn
12:03
his numbers are fine. I don't see it, but you never know.

Frazier has been pretty mediocre offensively and never a strong defender (although he's much improved over what he was). Do you know what the organization's plans on for Kevin Kramer? Former 2nd round pick, who like Newman, struggled mightily last September but sometimes a second chance is needed and rewarded (Newman). Not sure where Osuna fits on this club, could we eventually see Kramer and him swap spots?
nubyjas wilborn
12:04
Frazier hasn't been great this season. Kramer is working hard down on the farm. The team still thinks highly of Kramer, but Frazier will be given every chance to stick.

Obviously the team is likely to trade all they can out of the Dickerson Melky Cervelli Kang Lyles Liriano rental crew (and maybe even Chisenhall if he ever comes back).  Everyone else is locked down a while.  Are there any dark horse long term pieces that you could see getting moved?  I guess Marte comes to mind if they think Reynolds can play CF?
nubyjas wilborn
12:06
Problem teams have trading for Dickerson is the money and the fact that he is on a walk year. Could make him tough to move. I don't see Marte getting moved, yet, Reynolds can play CF in a pinch but isn't ready to do it daily.

It is not like we need another OF but what is going on with Chisenhall?  Will we see him in a Bucs uniform at all?  Also, curious about an update on Gage Hinsz the minor league pitcher who underwent heart surgery in 18.  Last I saw was that he pitched well in the Puerto Rican league but is showing on the disabled list.

I don't think we will see Lonnie. He's back home in North Carolina. I've been told he's contemplating his career.

Discouraging year to be a fan.  Done in by poor talent evaluation (Archer,  Kingham, Kang, Rodriguez and others), injuries and cheapness of the owner.  Will ownership use this recent swoon to enhance profits?  I see Dickerson and (if he ever gets healthy) Cervelli as prime trade candidates?  Trading those 2 would reduce annual team payroll to $45M  Your thoughts?
nubyjas wilborn
12:09
why would a team trade for either if their contracts are up next season? You'd have to have a very specific need.
Justin
12:11
Do you have any idea whether the team thinks highly of AAA lefty Jake Brentz?  Small (but growing) 28 inning sample, but it looks like he suddenly figured out how to throw strikes this year and didnt sacrifice "stuff" in the process.
nubyjas wilborn
12:12
He has 36 strikeouts and 6 walks this season between two levels. Batters are hitting .162 against him. he's building a good name.
Justin
12:12
it looks like the Pirates have about $30 million coming off the books between Dickerson, Cervelli, Chisenhall, Kang, Lyles, Liriano, and Melky.  They owe Marte, Vazquez, Polanco, and Archer ~7 in raises, and then arbitration raises.  If you were a betting man, would you guess that 2020 payroll will be over $70 million?
nubyjas wilborn
12:12
I'd say because they have a bunch of guys going into arb.

12:12
Which Pirates have the most value to other teams as the trade deadline approaches?  Melky, maybe Dickerson if he can show something over the next month?
nubyjas wilborn
12:13
That is a tough one. The problem the Pirates face is what will they get in return for some of the older guys.

Wonder which rapidly declining pitcher on a team-friendly contract will Quinn Priester get traded for this summer? ;)

I was super optimistic going into this year but the injuries have made a comeback impossible, in my view. How far do the Bucs have to fall for NH to pull the trigger on a full teardown (i.e., trading good players with years of control and not just contract year vets).
nubyjas wilborn
12:25
Very far. I don't the impression the team would ever do a full teardown. I also don't think the fans would react well to it.

When are we going to get our starters back and help in the pen?
nubyjas wilborn
12:25
when they get healthy.

It seems that NH is very good at getting great value from smaller trades and cycling through waivers and the scrap heap, but has been pretty bad on a number of bigger trades. Has there been any discussion on trying a different approach or having another FO member having more input on those decision types?
nubyjas wilborn
12:31
There are always discussions on how to get better.

Does this terrible pitching show us that magic Ray Searage is overstating his welcome?
nubyjas wilborn
12:33
I don't know if that is fair. Lyles has been good, so have Crick & Vazquez. Williams was good until his injury
Seth

Also it appears the Pirates pitchers throw more fastballs than any other club. I assume this is an organizational approach? Have they thought about doing what Houston is doing with their pitching staff (throw a ton of offspeed stuff). I mean the Astros turned two Pirates pitchers into studs just by telling them to throw less fastballs. I get the whole zig while they zag approach, but it's been dreadful so far.
nubyjas wilborn
12:34
Hurdle has said he likes when pitchers are throwing fastballs a little over 50 % but the command has to be there
12:35
Archer, for instance, threw the fastball with good velo, but it was down the pipe and he paid.
