Nubyjas Wilborn's Pirates chat: 07.24.19

Any chance the Polanco injury will force Pirates to try and sign Dickerson?
nubyjas wilborn
11:58
Remember that so-called glut in the outfield. It's funny how these things work themselves out. That said, the Pirates need to find out pretty quickly if Polanco can play this season. They may not have a choice but to hold on to Corey for this season and if they do they might hold on to him going forward.
Hello, everyone, I hope you're all doing well and are in good spirits. Let's chat.

In a late inning (8th/9th) tie, why don't Kyle Krick or Felipe Vasquez go more than an inning?  It seems like we're worried about them being available "tomorrow" when "tonight" hasn't been settled; so we often go into extra innings with someone on the mound that we would not normally use in a tight regular inning game.  It is particularly bothersome when Krick and/or Vasquez get through their inning with very minimal pitch counts.

They've both gone multiple innings this season. Probably not as often as fans like. Also, it isn't just about tomorrow it's about the whole season. They have to manage each player's health carefully. And there's more to it than pitch count. For instance, how many times did either pitcher warm up during the day or week. There's so many factors.

What will the return on Corey Dickerson be in a trade?  Is he enough to get a starting pitcher for 2020 in return??
nubyjas wilborn
12:04
Right now, there hasn't been much of a market considering his expiring contract. Most teams are looking for pitching they aren't looking to trade pitching away. However, Dickerson may be able to fetch a decent prospect who could be ready in 2020 or 2021.

Do you feel that the Pirates are close to giving up on Chris Archer?
nubyjas wilborn
12:04
Nah, he's been better recently.

Sooo, what can we expect back for Vazquez, and Marte?  I would like to think 4-6 good prospects if Pirates trade them both, and maybe 1for Dickerson, and a bullpen arm for Melky.   Hopefully no Cole type trades, just taking whatever they wanted, but actually hand picked prospects with potential.
nubyjas wilborn
12:06
I don't think the Pirates would or should trade either... Unless they get blown away. I don't think Marte will get back as much as Vazquez will. If I'm the Pirates I only trade Vazquez if a team like the Atlanta Braves offer Ian Andersen and Drew Waters.

With what we could potentially get for Vazquez why is NH not even open to the idea of trading him. He is a luxury the pirates simply do not need and getting guys like Lux, May, and Ruiz or Smith could help far more in the future than Vazquez ever could. We can’t get the guy in a save situation so why are we holding on to a closer? It makes zero sense and the one year people actually sort of want to sell, they won’t.

People who say Felipe is a luxury aren't around the team. He's a clubhouse leader, who teammates lean on. That said, Neal never said he wasn't open to trading Vazquez, in fact, he literally said the opposite. But, you have four years of control of him.

What players are the Pirates most likely to trade?
nubyjas wilborn
12:10
all of the expiring contract guys like Dickerson, Cabrera, Liriano, etc

Hi Nubyjas.  Archer's performance this year sums up the teams year so far, which is not bad, but just not good enough.  And Kela, yikes.  I'm not going to criticize NH for bringing those guys in because I applauded the moves when they were made.  However, I can confidently say that the Pirates record would not be worse than 46-54 right now if he hadn't made those moves.  My question is, do you think the chances of NH trading a high level prospect before the 7/31 deadline are slim and none (and slim left town)?  Thanks.

I don't see them as buyers right now.

I am struggling to understand why C Hurdle & N Huntington would want to work with their hands tied behind their back.  OK, only 30 jobs but why not take a SF offer if you had a chance.

Neal said he had unfinished business.

Why are Kyle Crick and Clayton Holmes still pitching for the Pirates?
nubyjas wilborn
12:15
Crick had scoreless outings in his last two, including last night. Holmes might not be after today's move that brings Kela back.

Rosenthal has the Bucs as "more than willing" to trade Kela. Seems incredibly stupid to sell so low w/ him coming off the IL & suspension, do you think it's really gotten to that point?
nubyjas wilborn
12:17
I wouldn't say incredibly stupid. Sometimes relationships just don't work. I'd like to think that Pirates and Kela can work it out.

I would like to see Keller brought up and just put him out there every 5th day. I think they shouldn't have done that with Glasnow to make sure they both weren't 4A pitchers. We are not catching 4 teams in front of us this year and start to prepare for next year.
nubyjas wilborn
12:19
He'll likely get called up in Septemeber. No point in rushing him before that.

Do you think the Braves might be willing to move just one of their pitchers for Kela? Obviously not Anderson, but just looking at Muller's walk rate, it's alarming and they have a ton of options. Maybe they view it as a more measured risk, and from the Pirates perspective, it's a similar risk to get a young pitching talent to pair with Keller.

I would suspect that Kela's injury and this altercation make his trade value pretty low, so this might be a pipe dream. Just thought it might be a fresh idea from all the FV chatter.
nubyjas wilborn
12:25
The Braves could use a guy like Kela. But Kela came to the Pirates with a bad reputation and this suspension isn't helping him. The Braves are big on character. They did have a pro scout at PNC Park over the week. I'm not sure if the Braves would go there, unless Kela shows up well in his next couple outings headed into the deadline.

Do you think given collapses in back to back years, its time to move on from Clint Hurdle?
nubyjas wilborn
12:26
I'm not sure how much of the collapses are on him. Eventually not having your best pitcher in Jameson Taillon and the offense regressing came back to bite.

Why is Jordan Lyles taking Mitch Keller's start tonight ?
nubyjas wilborn
12:27
pretty sure Lyles is pitching in Pittsburgh as he's shown at times he can get MLB hitters out.

Hello. Just wanted to thank the chatter who thinks a 5.40 ERA for a so called top of the line starter is not bad. Actually, it is horrendous.
nubyjas wilborn
12:29
is that a question? Pretty sure it isn't. It's also funny when we do and don't use ERA as a stat.

Wasn't kela good last year?

what is your take on Kela?   Guy who really doesn't want to be here?   What do you see happening with him?  set up guy to replace Crick?
