MLB is not the NBA. 8 seeds work in the NBA because low seeds are effectively doomed.

Teams are too close in baseball and games too random.

The best team doesn't have to always win for the playoffs to work, but you mostly need at least a *good* team to win

And players would be crazy to approve it.

What do they think happens to salaries if roster strength becomes less important?

Elsewise, there's not much incentive to doing anything more than building an 88-win team. Which is partially why salaries have slowed down

I've never asked a team due to conflict-of-interest, but when teams have asked for data about what the playoff probability of each number of wins is, I can read between the lines.
