Orioles Outlook '23

Hicks is actually covered through 2025 via his Yankees contract, not just the one year.

It makes Hicks one of the most interesting free agents to watch this offseason, since he revived his value tremendously when in Baltimore.  It isn't a stretch to say that any contender or would-be contender in baseball (uh, except the Yankees) would have interest in Hicks, so it might be a race of which is the most creative offer
Kyle Stowers

Will the Orioles finally trade me? I dont see how I can crack the MLB outfield anymore. Am I a good 2nd piece of a trade package or do I not have much value anymore?

Colton Cowser is still listed as a top 20 prospect even though he didn't hit at all in the majors. What is his trade value? Do you see the Orioles giving him another shot or trying to trade him at his point?
Mark P
1:24
Stowers has 131 career plate appearances in the majors.  Cowser has 77.  Both would have a lot of trade value, and while they might be trade chips due to the Orioles' prospect logjam, it is far too early to "give up" on either

I know his health is a huge question mark, but what about Trevor Rogers as a trade target? O's should load up on lefty starters and he seems like a decent upside gamble trade target. Good matchup w Marlins too, right?
Mark P
1:25
If the Marlins were willing to sell low on him, sure.  But if Miami wants big prospect value back, the Orioles aren't going to pay that price for a guy who might not be any better than anyone on the current staff

What kind of contract would Josh Hader be looking for as a free agent? I don't trust Cano as the full-time closer.  I love the idea of Cano in the 8th and Hader in the 9th in 2024 and then Cano/Hader/Batista in 2025.  Would help take pressure off young starting rotation as they continue to develop.

The Orioles aren't going to sign a reliever (even an elite reliever) to a huge contract

Think O's have the ability to pry Tarik Skubal from DET, particularly if Kremer goes back in the package to help the pitching staff?
Mark P
1:29
Detroit might be open to trading a pitcher, but Skubal is probably the last guy they'd move.  Skubal is looking like their ace of the future (or present) and would cost a boatload.  The Tigers have enough talent in place that they're probably going to be trying to win in 2024, not continue a rebuild
1:30
Now, moving Skubal for MLB-ready pieces isn't a true "rebuild" kind of move, but my point is that the Tigers would need a truly outrageous offer to consider trading Skubal
Os and Ms 4 life!!!
1:32
I'm a fan of both, so is there a Mariners-Orioles controllable pitching for controllable hitting deal that makes sense for both sides (assuming that Kirby/Gilbert and the top O's prospects are off-limits)?
Mark P
1:33
Miller or Woo for someone from the second tier of Orioles prospects would be interesting, but again, Baltimore might feel that Miller/Woo (good as they are) aren't necessarily a big enough upgrade or what the Orioles already have

If we trade for a front line starter, who is untouchable in minors?
Mark P
1:36
Holliday obviously, and I'd have to imagine Mayo, Kjerstad, Cowser are all pretty close to untouchable.

That's the tricky part about Baltimore's farm system --- they have SO many guys who would be star prospects on other teams, yet are kind of afterthoughts for the O's based on sheer volume. At the same time, the Orioles don't want to sell low-ish on any of these prospects due to the logjam.
1:38
Naturally the Orioles have their own internal evaluation on players that might well differ greatly from the public prospect rankings.  There might be a player or two who is well-regarded by external pundits, but privately, the Orioles have doubts about that player.  Those would be the types they're likeliest to trade this winter, while of course still publicly being high on all of their players' potential
Perfect trade

Bieber for Santander & Norby or Mayo.
Mark P

They're not doing that for a year of Bieber

What does the Orioles infield look like at the all star break in '24?
Mark P
1:40
Henderson at 3B, Holliday at SS, Westburg at 2B, Mountcastle/O'Hearn at 1B/DH, and Rutschman catching.

As a fan of another AL East team....that is scary.

what would it take to get Tarik Skubal from Detroit or Mitch Keller from Pittsburgh?
Mark P
1:42
I discussed Skubal earlier, and Keller would be slightly less expensive in a trade since he has one fewer year of arbitration control.  But still, it would take a lot to pry him away from Pittsburgh, since the Bucs have a greater need for pitching than Detroit does

1:43
What evidence is there that Jackson can play a better SS than Gunnar? (I would keep GH at Short)
Mark P
1:44
Both players' defense is highly regarded, so it'll be up to what the Orioles internally feel is the better long-term play.  The bottom line is that both look like they'll be quality regulars for a long time, no matter what the position is
1:45
We're over an hour now, so time to wrap up.  Thanks for all the questions, and stay tuned for the last couple of Offseason Outlooks and chats over the next week.  The Phillies' OO should be up this weekend, while the outlooks on the Diamondbacks and Rangers are coming (unsurprisingly!) after the World Series
