Hello and welcome to Press Panel: The Future of Media in a Post-Truth Age. The panelists for today are Jeremy O'Grady, Editor-in-Chief of The Week, Robert Guest, Foreign Editor of The Economist and Jim White, Telegraph columnist, writer, and broadcaster.

6:51
Robert begins by asserting that we live in the era of fake news, but that it's not the first one. He feels that in 16th century, this was common for news angel printing presses.
6:52
He gives another example. In 1835, the New York sun, one of the great daily newspapers in the united states, started running a series story about a man that could hassle looking through a modern telescope at the moon.
6:53
And the story was not entirely fake. He really watched a man on the telescope, and he was sitting in South Africa rather than observing the moon.
6:54
Robert ends by saying that it was entirely fake and that New York Sun were not to be trusted.
6:56
Jeremy feels it important to distinguish between fake news and the idea of partisanship.
6:57
6:58
He talks to us about how we should not trust all that we read and should check the authenticity.
6:59
He questions to what extend we are in this post-truth age and wants to know if it's because of the producers of the news or consumers of the news.

Jim, on the other hand, being in Journalism for a while shares an account where his Editor used to go down to train and count which newspapers passengers used to read. This, surprisingly, he claims to be close to actual purchasing figures.
7:02
Jim further explains that if we go to a train station there you will see 1 person reading paper and rest on phone.
7:04
Jim clearly shows and talks about the very revolutionary and uncomfortable shift in news creating a sense of uncertainty in the case of legacy media.
7:06
He continues by mentioning the tremendous advances in democratic journalism by also speaking about the dangers.
7:07
Jim is excited about how Journalism can create a new world.
7:08
7:10
According to Robert, people still believe in astrology and homeopathy, and also talks about how social media already shows posts we like, strengthening the views of various groups or rather widening.
7:11
Robert also states examples from Lithuania and Russia about the same. Hence, the extreme need to verify sources.
7:13
Do you think the news you consume through social media is reliable?

Jeremy agrees by pointing out that we are tribal human beings.
7:18
Jim feels there exists a dichotomy between fact versus opinion. He shares a personal experience where European fans blamed their own country and thus, winning a campaign.
7:19
Robert feels the same and asserts that authoritarian regimes can switch narratives of the country.
With that, the panel discussion comes to an end. Thank you all for being with us.
