Paul, do you think the Pirates should have spent some money in free agency or do you think their strategy of, hoping the players they have play better, is the way to go?
Zeise
12:02
I think that the answer depends on whay you think they should do. I think they should rebuild which means tear it down, save the money and use this season to acquire prospects and get young guys Major League experience. To try and slop together an 82-win team would make no sense and be a waste of money.
Where is my Clark bar?
12:02
I agree with Cook in that this Penguins team look special. I am very excited to see how it plays out. Was Kessel really that big of an addition by subtraction?
Zeise
12:03
The Penguins look very good right now. They are blessed with speed again seemingly. I dont think Kessel was an addition by subtraction, i just think they have re-committed  as a team to play responsibly and with accountability

Is there any chance that the Pirates could get Lonnie Chisenhall back?
Zeise

Where is my Clark bar?

Hey Paul, if the Steelers sign Dupree that makes Edmunds the weakest link on a very good defense. His speed is elite, but something is amiss. What options do the Steelers have? Would and Could they consider signing S. Davis to a reasonable contract? Would that be an upgrade to the backend? Could Edmunds then learn under a current starter to have a different role more situated for his skill set? Thanks!
Zeise
12:07
Edmunds is a bit of a liability against the pass but i do think he has value. And if they were to sign a safety they indeed could find a role for Edmunds because he is a good athlete and is pretty good in run support

So it appears that Rooney has given Fitchner a complete pass for last season's offense, and the only change made to the offensive staff is the hiring of a QB coach - which, if Ben comes back healthy as Rooney is expecting, won't make any difference next year because Ben is going to take his coaching from Fitchner.  Does this give you a reason to be optimistic about next season's offense?
Zeise
12:13
I don’t think he is getting a pass. I would say the fact that they forced a quarterback coach on him and one who is known as an innovative offensive mind suggests they think he needs help. And they also put him on notice that they have a replacement in house
The Dude
12:13
How much input will the new QB coach have on offensive game plans? How will RF react to that?
Zeise
12:15
I think Fichtner will still have the final say and do the game planning. But there is no way they brought a guy like Canada here if they werent going to pick his brain and allow him to help update the offense

Paul - do you think Foster, Decastro and Pooncey are at the end of their usefullness?
Zeise
12:17
I think Pouncey and Castro still have something the tank for sure. I dont know about Foster, he had a rough year. It may have just been a down year though. He could have one more year in him, but it will likely be elsewhere.

Does Matt Canada appear to be a viable selection as a QB coach giving the appearance of a spotty career such that he didn't appear to last that long with any any football position he previously has had either on college or the pros?  Does it also appears he won't have any significant impact on #7 and will focus on the young QBs? Why didn't Steelers hire an experienced and former professional QB who had a great reputaion for developing QBs?
Zeise
12:20
He is certainly more than qualified to do a good job. I think he was hired because of his ability to run offenses and his reputation as an innovative offensive mind.

After seeing the complete falloff of manning and rivers ,shouls the steelers be concerned with bens age/comeback attempt, not a fan of Rudolph and obviously the duck should be tarred on his way out of town ,who do thay target as a 2/3
Zeise
12:23
They absolutely should worry about how much Ben has left in the tank. But for better or worse, they are married to the idea of Rudolph. He will be the backup. And you just have to hope that Ben has at least one or two more good years in his arm.

With Pitt's "Victory Lights" plan I assume an on campus football stadium is not a possibility if it even was one to begin with.
Zeise
12:26
YES!! When my boss told me this would be an all sports chat I said to myself “there will be someone upset that Victory Heights does not include a football stadium!!” And you didnt let me down. And no, there is no football stadium at Panther Hollow coming......

Why are you sooooo slow to post and respond to questions? Are any of your peers open to coaching you a bit on how to do this?
Zeise
12:31
It is bexause I have to sift through a bunch of garbage like this to find good questions. Stop wasting my time and clogging up my queue with this crap every week.

12:31
I think Bens insistence on calling shots on personnel (Foster) and coaches(Coach Randy) hurts the team. Your thoughts?
Zeise
12:33
I think hIs relationship with Fichtner hirt the team because he is not as good at his job as Todd Haley was. But he is the most important player and he needs to be comfortable so it is a fine line.

Lots ofspeculation the Steelers will drop Chickillo due to his salary, but is he due to make that much more than other backup OLBs?
Zeise
12:35
He makes a lot more than he should. And the worst thing for him is it is a contract they can get out of with a very small cap hit. I want to say he is due to make about $6 million but If he is cut the cap hit is only like $1.2 million or so. That is a lot of cap savings to cut a marginal player.

Do you foresee the Steelers exploring any trade scenarios before the draft or doing anything in free agency?
Zeise
12:39
I dont think they will be overly active other than cutting some guys for cap relief. They may go get a fee inexpensive free agents after June 1st but I think they are more concerned with getting the salary cap situation under control.
12:40
Id say a tight end, that is their most pressing need. And then i would cut vance McDonald for the cap savings it would bring

Even if another team volunteers to for Hard Knocks do you really see HBO and the NFL picking any team other than the Steelers? Add a likely HOF game with the early training camp start to the intrigue of Ben’s return and the team’s enormous popularity and there is no way they pass on those ratings.
Zeise
12:46
The Hard Knocks thing is way overrated. Do you really think Mike Tomlin is gonna allow anything remotely interesting or controversial make the final cut for the show? Jon Gruden ruined Hard Knocks for me because he was so strict with what he allowed to actually get on the show. It was boring and the worst season yet and the Steelers would probably be even less interesting once it got edited

How in the world is Geno not an all-star ? Seems it's more of a popularity contest sometimes to me?
Zeise
12:47
Where have you been? They are all popularity contests

Paul,  To not make changes to this coaching staff will be a big mistake.  OC, Special Teams would be a good start.  Maybe Canada can help with the offensive game plan.  So much hinges on Ben's return. Big if.  Thank you.
Zeise
12:48
Well they took a big step forward by hiring Canada. I agree they need to change special teams coaches but I like the addition of Canada

alot of people terrified of the fact Mason is still considered the "future". I will not sit here and say that I think he will be but I also think that he was very very unfairly criticized this year. Name me a young inexperienced QB that could have come in with no run game (Defenses can focus on the pass), practice squad WR's filling in and can be successful. I thought he looked sharp coming in that Jets game. again, not saying i think hes the future but i do think he has more upside than people talk about. Thoughts?

Is Rudolph a Landry Jones 2.0?
Zeise
12:54
These are two similar questions. Ive seen enough from Mason Rudolph to believe he has a chance to improve. He has a lot of tools to work with. I dont think he is Landry Jones, I think he is better. He was improving each week before he got that head shot. I think the Steelers should stick with him for another year.
