It is all going down right now! Let’s get started

Paul...thanks for your incite and not always "carrying the water" for the franchises in this town like some writers.   Question...If big ben wants to come back...if your the GM or owner wouldn't you require him to be at a certain weight...I'm tired of hearing he is just old and his mobility is bad because of it....his literally is 40lbs heavier than when he was younger...brady,rodgers,brees etc ...none look that much different..maybe he could move a "Little" better
Zeise
12:08
If I were the GM I would say “get on with your life’s work.” The Steelers need to move on from him and get started on rebuilding the next Super Bowl era
Tom G.
12:09
Well Paul,my desire to have a Triple A baseball team near Pittsburgh has finally been sated.I assume the Pirates will adjust ticket and concession prices accordingly.
Zeise
12:09
Ha ha you know better than that!

Paul...i hear AR2 is meeting with some members of media today..........i'd love to wager we will hear "good year but fell short" "won division"  "need to run better"   All empty words with zero accountability.....and SPIN job!!!   Complete embarrassment the past 4 years...what say you?
Zeise
12:13
I would say he is very good at the PR and spin game. And again “we were 12-4 and had some key injuries on defense” is enough spin that fans and media fan boys will jump on it and adopt it as a narrative. Anyone with any amount of objectivity knows the Steelers have a lot of holes to fill

12:14
Paul.. how can Art not blow this up.  Offense stinks but defense comes up so small all the time. They aren’t elite like they think.  I love the “sack record” stuff.  Great but you guys have won nothing.  As our friend Lee flowers says.    This team for 4 years has been paper champs.   Start over!!!!!!
Zeise
12:14
Again, 12-4 and won the division is what will be spun into “we are close!” They aren’t close but that’s what the spin is

Someone opined in answer to a question (I think it was Mr. Dulac) that Tomlin was on the hot seat and that 2021 season results would be a factor in him being offered a new contract. With the number of anticipated player changes, the need to rebuild the O line and revive the RB position, the possibility of Big Ben retiring, and the hardest projected schedule, can we assume this is his last year in Pittsburgh?
Zeise
12:17
No I wouldn’t assume that at all. I don’t think the Steelers want to move on from him and will support him. And if Roethlisberger comes back they have a chance to be a playoff team again and if they make the playoffs again, well “we are close!”

Do pro leagues with salary caps really need drafts anymore? The idea, I believe, was that losing teams generally drew smaller crowds and less revenue and blue chippers would want to sign with more successful teams. But now successful teams usually have big payrolls and not a lot of cap room so losing ones with cap room and TV revenue, etc. could simply offer more money. There'd be less motive to tank and an incoming player could have a bit of freedom to choose his destination.
Zeise
12:19
Yes because I think teams sometimes lose because of injuries and stuff beyond their control. I like the idea of giving teams that finish at the bottom a chance to procure top end talent that wouldn’t sign with them if they were free agents

Does the retirement of Pouncey make it more likely or less likely that Big Ben will hang them up, or will it not be a factor at all? I hope he comes back.
Zeise
12:21
I think that Ben Roethlisberger will do his best to try and talk Pouncey into coming back
Tina

Hi Paul, Stephen A. Smith this morning said he does not believe that “his” Steelers have enough to trade  for DeShaun Watson who has now publicly requested a trade.  Your thoughts please.
Zeise
12:22
I would agree. I mean they would have to move a lot of parts around and probably overpay in draft capital for him to make it happen. It doesn’t seem like it will be possible
Mark

Hey Paul.  The latest example of unhinged Steeler fans is the lamenting of the loss of Bruce Arians, because he has had some success since he left here.  When he was OC here, the nicest thing said about him was that he was a moron.  You can't make this stuff up.  Am I right?
Zeise
12:24
When he was here Ben Roethlisberger was sacked a ton, hit a ton more and was on his way to becoming one of those QBs whose career is cut short because he got battered and bruised. Arians is a good coach but the Steelers made the correct call
Mike
12:24
Hello, Paul.  Do you think Bill Guerin would be interested in the recently vacated GM position?  You'd think the Pens would consider him a viable candidate.
Zeise
12:26
Why would he leave the job he has for a similar job that is a lateral move? I’m not saying it is impossible but why do that?
Gene
12:26
If JuJu isn’t resigned do you think they draft another WR?
Zeise
12:27
yes I think they do anyway. They seem to like to draft receivers and sort of keep the depth In that room replenished
Gina C.
12:27
Good afternoon Paul.  Do you think JJ Watt may be open to playing for the Steelers in light of the Watson trade demand?
Zeise
12:28
Yes I’m sure he would love to. How would this make sense for the Steelers who are already cash strapped and have too many old guys on bad contracts?
A Major Fantasy
12:28
With a payroll at $40 million and probably dropping a bit more, a sluggish free agent market, and no giant in the NL Central, it seems to me that the Pirates could double their payroll and get some impact free agents who'd make them legitimate contenders for the division while the kids are developing and spare fans from suffering through a couple 90 plus loss seasons. (How's that for a run on sentence?) An $80-$90 million payroll STILL leaves them at around the 10th percentile in MLB salaries. It will never happen and I don't know why I wrote this other than to get the idea out.
Zeise
12:29
Well it is now down to $30 million sooooooo ... It ain’t gonna happen they have made it clear this is the year for rebuilding and reloading and so they are gonna sign a few low level free agents to get through the year

[code-block]Hi Paul, I did some homework and researched the last 11    worst rushing attacks in the league, their win loss record, and their total QB rating to see if QB performance was     negatively impacted by having no balance. Here is what I    found

2020 Steelers 12-4 QBR 93.5
2019 Dolphins 5-11 QBR 80
2018 Cardinals 3-13 QBR 89
2017 Lions 9-7 QBR 98.4
2016 Vikings 8-8 QBR 97.7
2015 Lions 9-7 QBR 95.1
2014 Raiders 3-13 QBR 74.4
2013 Falcons 4-12 QBR 89.5
2012 Cardinals 5-11 QBR 63.1
2011 Giants 9-7 QBR 92.9
2010 Cardinals 5-11 QBR 60.5

Steelers easily have the best record of the bunch and     aside from a couple in prime Stafford years and an out of nowhere Bradford year in 2016. Ben is near the top of this list of good QB performances with awful running games. Why are we kicking him to the curb? Keep the D mostly intacact and find a bit of a running game and I think we have a    shot. Ben may no longer be Superman doing it alone but I  still think he can be very good with a better team. What  say yo

If your goal is to slop together another playoff year that you lose in the first round, yeah bring back Ben. I’m not sure what the point in that is. Get started on your next Super Bowl era and go get a new quarterback

Mel Kyper has the Steelers taking Zaven Collins in his mock draft.  I think he would be a good choice depending on who is available with the 24th pick.  He could be a rush defensive end in addition to playing linebacker. The defensive line is not getting younger and Dupree may not be back. What are your thoughts?   Thanks.
Zeise
12:33
I think left tackle, running back and quarterback and even corner are all far greater needs

It seems that Roethlisberger is coming back. Doesn't it make sense to extend him to soften the cap hit? I get that it's kicking the can down the road more but it would be a smaller can. I also understand that it would take him agreeing to such a deal.
Zeise
12:39
No I think you have a chance to get out from under his contract by not extending him. There are two scenarios that make sense: bring him back and eat the $41 million salary cap or move on now. Any scenario that extends Roethlisberger’s dead money beyond this season is a losing one in my mind.

There seems to be two kinds of football coaches: nice guys and the Bill Bellichek type.  Considering the consistent failures of the Steelers over the last five years, do we need a Bellichek type of coach now?
Zeise
12:40
I don’t know, Tony Dungy was a nice guy, Bruce Arians is a nice guy, I think Andy Reid is a nice guy, Pete Carrol - there are plenty of them that have had success. You don’t need to be a micromanaging personality starved hoodie wearing douche to have success in the NFL
Ralph
12:40
who do you think the Steelers will hire as OL coach?
Zeise
12:45
No idea but it isn’t relevant. As I wrote Shaun Sarrett wasn’t the problem. Guys getting old was the problem. I’m much more interested in who will be playing offensive line than who will be coaching it
