So, the Rooney rule was established in 2002.  At the time there were 3 black coaches.  20 years later there is only 1 black NFL coach. Is the Rooney Rule a Trojan horse?  All you see is the outside, but not what is inside?
Zeise
12:15
The Rooney Rule established to create opportunities. But that doesn't mean people have to get hired
And you can't make teams hire anyone

Chris Morgan has been hired by the Bears to be their OL coach. If we would want to lure him back with more bucks, can we then call him an outside hire? But, seriously, why would the Bears want him and we wouldn't? Does either team know something that the other doesn't?
Zeise
12:16
Maybe the Bears just offered him more money. Or maybe the Steelers let him go because they have the big name - Mike Munchak - hire in mind

Some things I think I think(thank you Phil Musick)The Pitt Basketball program was a "Dumpster Fire"according to Jeff Capel when he arrived  and is so now.He has to go.Tell Sean Miller his vacation is over.

I don't know, as I have said many times - he has built at least the foundation of a program and he has built an identity. It has taken him four years to do it but here he is. Now he needs more players. And to me, to fire him is to start all the way over

Am I incorrect with my thinking?  Steelers should fulfill needs via FA & with the upcoming draft-They can't fulfill all their needs in one offseason, & I would not waste draft capital on a BIG SPLASHY trade, or spend "crazy money" on FA--get depth, younger & prepare team for a QB acquisition in 2023
Zeise
12:18
You are wrong. I keep hearing this thing about going after Jimmy Garoppolo and that seems silly. A rebuilding team should not spend draft  picks to trade for a middling quarterback and $24 million of their cap space.

The NFL players should boycott the Pro Bowl in support of Brian Flores. An unimportant game that no one wants to play in would suddenly become very important if they all refused to play in it.
Zeise

Nobody would care
Tanking
12:18
From what I've been reading of the Brian Flores situation it seems to me he was badly treated. But aside from reducing the number of black NFL coaches overall I can't see how his situation connects to it. He got fired for not tanking when Ross told him to. I admire that. I think tanking is bad and I'd want the best possible winning percentage on my resume for the next time I was looking for a coaching job. But refusing to do what your boss tells you to will often get you canned. I totally get why he was angry when he learned the job interview he had was window dressing because the Giants already had decided who they'd hire. It's happened to me twice and I know others who it's happened to. I guess my question is if you think Flores would have been fired here if everything was exactly the same except that he was white?

He got fired because he didn't want Tua

NFL overtime protocol:regular season, one 15 minute period.Whoever is ahead at end of period wins if still tied goes in books as a tie.Post season,15 minute periods until someone ahead at end of period.Your thoughts.
Zeise
12:25
I would be OK with that because at least then you have a whole period for both teams to make their case. The players don't want to play that many extra minutes
Coach15
12:25
Do you think, team will give #1 $ to #18?  Seems like we need so much help, & annually they keep drafting WRs & they're gone after handful of years, wasting picks, when they continue to patch holes with #5,6 & 7 picks for depth-
Zeise
12:26
The Steelers should give up no picks at all. They need picks
Tanking
12:26
Do you think the Rooney Rule has any real affect on the business of increasing the number of black head coaches? I always thought that a team who had a white coach they wanted to hire just knew they needed to find a couple black coaches to interview. I suppose it could turn out that one of those guys could do so well in the interview that the team would change its mind but that seems a longshot.
Zeise
12:27
No, but it has a lot of bad unintended consequences. I think the one thing it has done is identify black candidates and give them a chance to interview but let's face it - are there any black candidates - Leftwich, Vance Joseph, Jim Caldwell - that we don't already know about who have gotten interviews?
Coach15
12:27
Am I on an island, thinking that the Steelers did not, make a mistake by drafting Najee last year with their first pick?  They're set for the unforeseen future & the idea of not drafting a RB or other positions early in draft is overrated--you draft what helps your team!
Zeise
12:28
A lot of people believe that to be true and it is true. Harris was the Steelers best player on offense. If they get him some help they will be in a great place for helping a young or new quarterback have success

Hello Paul, What good is a Rooney Rule without penalties?  From what I gather, there are none. Apparently, owners are free to hire with impunity.  The mockery the Giants made of the process is damning.  Their crime was exposed by an errant Belicheck congratulatory text to the wrong Brian, before Flores was interviewed.
Zeise
12:30
There are penalties but very few teams are dumb enough to not do interviews with at least one black candidate. This is not something you can legislate. It has to come from the hearts and minds.

Paul, what is your official position on the relationship between sports and geopolitics, if any? Or in other words, should me & DJ feel at all uneasy when that ridiculous direct deposit from the House of Saud hits our money market accounts?

Would Ben Roethlisberger have won at least one or two more Super Bowls if he wasn’t competing against Tom Brady?
Zeise
12:31
Maybe - he lost what, two AFC title games to Brady I believe? So perhaps that is the case, but you never know what would have happened.

You call JuJu a “ham and egger” but what is different with his skill set  compared to that of the great Heinz Ward? I do agree the Steelers cannot sign JuJu and play our WRs corp in the same role as they had this past year. However I would like to see them sign JuJu and add to the room because he is the only one I ever see fight for yards after the catch.

Look at their numbers and look at their careers and then get back to me about that comparison

Paul, what is my leverage situation vis a vis demanding ultimate play calling abilities, if I am to be considered for that local DC position?  I'm thinking not much, but would appreciate your thoughts.
Zeise
12:33
There is none. Your choices are find another DC job or work for Mike Tomlin and have the job in title only. Hey it is a nice raise though

You answered my mailbag question about Beano Cook yesterday and said he'd hate college football now. That was the answer I expected but could you say what some of what he'd hate are?
Zeise
12:34
He was all about tradition and loyalty. He would hate the transfer portal. He would hate the money that has changes the way the game is played. He would hate the idea that Pitt and Penn State and Pitt and WVU and Texas and Texas A&M and Oklahoma and Nebraska don't play each other every year

PITT basketball. I have read your thoughts around Capel and that the program is moving in the right direction. I see some glimpses of hope, but is not winning any road games tainting that view? These are not top ACC teams PITT is losing to on the road.
Zeise
12:35
I agree. Winning games is the goal. But they are undermanned. He needs more players. This offseason if he (1) has a mass exodus of his own players and (2) doesn't add players who are capable of scoring then I might agree that he isn't the guy to get the thing right

I thought when Rust & then Malkin came back, HCMS should have play them on the 2nd line maybe with Kapanen. We all know Malkin's bad tendencies & Kapanen's penchant for floating out there & not going in the corners.  Rust who has played well with Malkin in the past is real good defensively & is able to cover up for those other two. At least he should have try this to start. Leave Crosby, Jake & Rodrigues' line intact. At times there were nights ERod was carrying this team esp on The Power Play. The Carter & Blueger lines were doing well in spite of who was in, was out on any given night. Then HCMS took ERod off The first PP unit which eventually killed all of ERod's momentum which you still see now about 10 games later. Well, injuries, lack of scoring by others & brutal schedule haven't helped. It just got me to thinking that HCMS should try those top 2 that way after the break.
Zeise
12:36
Wow that is a lot to digest. Kapanen has not been good. I am not sure what they should do with him but he can't keep playing like he has been playing.

And here's a truly obscure old fart's question. When I was a kid in Johnstown I watched a really, really, short lived TV show about Pitt football called "On Fifty With Pitt" with John Michelosen and a host. I always thought Beano was the host but the show wasn't mentioned in his bio. Have you ever heard of it?
Zeise

I'm old. Not quite that old ha ha
