Right about now we should be getting ready to watch the first games of March Madness. Instead you will have to settle for chatting with me!!!

The Pirates are the Bengals of MLB, agreed?
Zeise
12:06
The Bengals? Owner that is notoriously frugal, made playoffs a few times but didn’t win a playoff game, most years begin and they are an afterthought — I’m sold!
AK
12:06
All the restructuring the Steelers are doing worries me.  I would think that will catch up to them eventually.
Zeise
12:09
We have been saying that for years, though, and they always seem to manage it. You hope the salary cap expands enough each year to help them out. It is clear they are playing for now, though, and will do so until Ben Roethlisberger is done. That might mean a really lean year because they are capped out the year after he is done but they seem to do a good job of managing it

The term, “winning the offseason” is annoying don’t you think?  The pundits say the Browns are winning the off-season every year.  What has it gotten them?
Zeise
12:11
Good point but sometimes teams that win the off-season also win in the season. But there is no question creating a splash is what fans love in the off-season. So I think it it is an OK phrase but you are right it is overrated often

Paul,  Looking at the Steeler's at this time realistically they are not in a good place.  Counting on Ben to return to his pre injury status with liss offensive talent is a reach.  I see some subpar seasons ahead maybe have a really bad year and draft a stud QB.  Next year would nice to stink and get a crack at the Clemson QB.
Zeise
12:13
I don’t know - if Ben can play at a reasonable level they can be a playoff team again. Think about it - the defense is going to be really good. And if the offense is just competent then I think they will be in a good place
AK

$3M+ per year seems like a lot for a FB and special teamer...
Zeise
12:14
Ray Fittipaldo raised a good point - Derek Watt is essentially replacing two players, Rosie Nix and Tyler Matakavich, and he cost what those two combined would cost

12:14
Does the loss of Foster and Finney mean the Steelers are more likely to draft a lineman high in the draft or pursue one in free agency?
Zeise
12:15
Yes, I think they will definitely draft a guy and also probably look to sign a cheap veteran for some depth
Gene
12:15
if you are Colbert and Tomlin what is the 49th pick in the draft?
Zeise
12:15
Well like I just wrote - probably offensive line

Hi Paul. With Brady and Rivers moving on the old guard of QB's are being slowly written into the history books. Looks like the new pattern in the NFL is getting a younger QB at a low price and build around them. The Steelers are now saddled an aged QB who kills their cap. They had to cut players they surely would have kept due to Bens contract.. The next few years are going to see the Steelers regress while the North gets stronger. We have the highest paid QB in the North who no longer is the best.
Zeise
12:17
Again, the defense should be really good for the next two years and so if the offensive is even just credible, they have a chance to be more than competitive

12:17
Hello Paul, if running back Cam Akers slips to the 4th round would the Steeler draft him?  I think he would be a good fit!
Zeise
12:18
Well you know I’d love that as I always want more Florida State guys!!! He won’t be there but if he is and they haven’t selected a running back with one of their earlier picks, would be excellent
12:19
I think Brady is really going to be a disappointment in Tampa. I just don’t think he has much left. And you are right - he might get killed in that Arians offense like Ben did. And at his age it could mean his season ends early
Matt from LA
12:19
Surprised by McGowen's decision to transfer from Pitt? Although a seemingly great kid, not a major loss for the program?
Zeise
12:21
Not at all, and anyone else who has followed things should know this too. Either him or Xavier Johnson had to go - they just didn’t play well together. Once Johnson said he was coming back it was the inevitable thing to happen

12:21
About how much salary cap room do the Steelers have to work with.
Zeise
12:22
They just restricted Pouncey so more than you think. They have probably in the $5 million range now
Gino
12:22
Hi Paul...any idea if the Steelers will be signing any additional free agents?  Thanks.
Zeise
12:22
I think but it will be typical in that it will come later rather than sooner since they need to add some depth that costs little money
Alan in Nashville
12:23
Hi, Paul...With the signing of Watt, it convinces me even more that Canada was brought in here for more than just being a QB coach. I think the offensive philosophy is about to change a bit, even with Ben back. Agree?
Zeise
12:24
I think the owner made it very clear the Steelers running game is not good enough. There is no question running the ball better will be an important step

Paul. Thanks for the chat. Hope you n yours r hanging in there n staying well. I don’t see any way NBA and NHL can ramp up again, not even for abbreviated playoffs. MLB can MAYBE get in a  half season at best. Think the NFL will be impacted at least a little also (OTAs, Training camps) Seems like we all be watching e-gaming and simulations to get our sports fix.  What do u think?
Zeise
12:24
I’m not in the prediction business but I fear you are right

12:24
What will happen first ? Pitt Basketball wins a national title or the Pirates break .500 ?
Zeise
12:25
Pirates break .500. They have done it four times since 2013 so that isn’t that far out of line or unimaginable
Colts Corral
12:25
I don't believe for a minute Bob Nutting would've paid his out of work workers a dime unless MLB forced him. He's just that evil a man. Agreed ?
Zeise
12:25
I would think, given the Pirates charities and how invested in community service he is, that he would have done something to help people
AK
12:25
I can’t understand how McCullers is still on the team...
Zeise
12:26
He will never go away!!!
Matt from LA
12:27
Can you explain how a team that has finished barely  500 for the past few years never seems to have any real money under the cap to spend on free agents?
Zeise
12:33
Because they do a great job of taking care of their own players. They have a lot of guy’s making a lot of money and that starts with their quarterback, who makes a big chunk of salary cap
Treesmann
12:33
Happy March non- madness.
If Ben were to be cut trades or retired before the 2021 season what would his cap hit be for the Steelers.
Zeise
12:34
I am not cap expert but if they cut or trade Ben before next season that will be a huge hit in terms of dead cap money
