OK let’s fire away!

How can the Steelers claim to be serious about contending for championships while we have the absolute worst QB in the division?
Zeise
11:06
What do you suggest they do? This isn’t Weird Science, you can’t just create a quarterback in a lab. You think they don’t want a quarterback? They know they need one, they just don’t grow on trees
JR

Paul: Slovis or Patti…have you seen these guys workout? If so what’s your opinion? Thanks!
Zeise
11:07
I have not seen either and neither has anyone else other than coaches and players as practices are closed. I can’t imagine you get a guy to come from USC if he didn’t have some assurances he was gonna be a starter

Hi Paul, after 4 years of quiet mystery recruiting, Capel’s visits and offers are being documented on a daily basis. Do you think he knows he’s on the hot seat?
Zeise
11:07
I think if he doesn’t, he isn’t paying attention

I am SICK OF hearing how great Tomlin is. The narrative is Pittsburgh is the gold standard organization. The Jags and Browns are a mess. Since 2011 Pit has 3 playoff wins, 1 AFC champ app, with a HOF QB in his prime, and elite talent, while Jax has 2 playoff wins, 1 AFC Champ app with Blake Bortles and owns the head to head over Pit. The Browns have 2 less playoff wins, also own the head to head over Pit -and beat Pit without a head coach. Its shameful that all Tomlin has to do is spew meaningless clever cliches to fool fans and the media. It's all drivel. 31 other teams would have fired him by now- 3 playoff wins ranking #21 in playoff wins (3) of 32 teams in the last 11 years. They rank #25 in playoff win %.333. Tomlin rode Arians and Lebeau's coattails to a SB in year 2. You think by now Tomlin would be a better coach? You have insider knowledge, what  input was Tomlin giving Arians and Lebeau in 2008? Or Tomlin just didnt get in the way and now gets a lifetime contract and credit for being a great coach?
Zeise
11:09
He has done a very good job. He has some flaws but he has been a very good coach

Gotta Masters pick next week?

Yeah I will go with Colin Morikawa, I just like the kid’s demeanor

Other than the Steelers, In any business/company in the world does this occur? After being ranked in the lower half in one of the major aspects of its business (#20 run game 2017) which determines its success, the owner gives a directive to its CEO/coach/boss that a certain aspect of their business MUST improve, and every year thereafter that aspect finishes near or at the bottom of that industry, and that coach/boss not only does not get fired, but gets a 3 year extension?  In the Steelers case, Tomlin was given a directive by Rooney to improve the 20th ranked run game after 2017. Tomlin followed that in 2018 ranked #31, 2019 ranked #29,  2020 ranked #32,  2021 ranked #29 according to pro football reference.com. This did not even include the once great Steelers RUN defense that finished #32 in 2021. Tomlin "the great '' received a 3 year extension during the spiral to the bottom for both the RUN Offense and DEFENSE while winning 0 playoff games. Why does Tomlin survive?

I think the Steelers should draft a wide receiver in the first round. They have no depth with JuJu, Washington, and McLoud gone. And what they have (DJ and Claypool) leaves a lot to be desired. Plus DJ is in the last year of his deal in a crazy WR market (see Kirk's deal in Jax). They should be able to snage one of the kids from OSU, Williams from Bama, London from USC, or Dotson from PSU at 20. What do you think?
Zeise
11:12
The Steelers need to add at least two or three receivers. I would actually trade Diontae Johnson to get a first round pick. Go draft two receivers and sign a veteran

11:12
Should yinzers prepare for Kenny not the be the steelers pick at #20?   I mean, it seems any other player, other than the mountain DL from UGa will be unacceptable.   Its gonna be ok.
Zeise
11:12
He is not going to be there at 20

Paul, for the hockey playoffs I do not see any team that is easier for the Pens to play.  Carolina, Rangers, and Caps all are good and difficult to beat in a series.  What's your take?
Zeise
11:12
Probably the Caps just because the goalie situation is probably the weakest of the three teams
Tom in Punta Gorda
11:13
Hi Paul, how about George Karlaftis at#20, or#52 if he is still there? Big strong guy, maybe develope into another Aaron Smith ( my all time favorite Steeler).
Zeise
11:13
If they find the next Aaron Smith in this draft, they have done a great job!

Good Morning Mr. Zeise,

A comment from Gerry Dulac in his chat about Tomlin not giving a formal send off for Ben was that there is some bad blood between BR/Steelers mainly from Big Ben's side.
Zeise
11:15
Ben is and always has been a narcissistic self important insecure drama Queen. Any tension or stress on that relationship is because of his ego
TheVad
11:15
Sorry hit enter too soon...do you know the reason behind this bad blood?
Zeise

I answered it above ha ha

Hi Paul, the big question of the day here. Are the Pens going to get to the Eastern Conference Finals? At times they look unstoppable and then there's the Rangers.  Your thoughts?  Thx!
Zeise
11:16
I have sneaking suspicion they don’t get out of the division. They might beat the Rangers but I think they will lose in the second round

Does the arbitration fiasco with Reynolds send a message to all the players in the minors that their long term prospects in Pittsburgh are next to nonexistent?
Zeise
11:17
Why in the world would you want to play for a team that battles with their best player over $600,000
Joe W
11:17
Your opinion on how will the the D Watson contract will affect future QB negotiations?  All QB’s demanding guaranteed money?  More upfront guaranteed money? More QB movement because of cap issues?
Zeise
11:18
If you were a star quarterback with lots of leverage, or better yet his agent, would you settle for anything less than a fully guaranteed deal?

In yesterday's mailbag someone asked why a smallish school like Villanova is consistently better at basketball than a big school like Pitt. Your answer was "Jay Wright." That's true now but they won a championship with Rollie Massino and got to the championship game with Jack Kraft so it seems there's something more going on that allows them to find coaches who are very successful consistently. Any idea how? Does playing 1AA football rather than 1A free up resources to use on basketball that someplace like Pitt can't use on basketball?
Zeise
11:22
Well there is that too -  1-AA football means it is a basketball school. All of the most resources go to basketball. And they are in a very good conference fit wise, one that has made it clear basketball is the top dog

Paul, you need to move to the 2pm slot so we hear ya every day .......  question time, do you like taking calls from people ?   personally I prefer to listen to experts like you and don't enjoy the commentary from callers
Zeise
11:23
It depends on the subject and what is going on. People like to vent and there are times when callers can add to the show

Hi Paul thanks for the chats! Who should be the odd man out when Zucker returns to the starting lineup? I hope it is not Boyle or Rodriguez because they bring a little something different that we may need at playoff time.
Zeise
11:23
Think about Rodriguez going from where he was to being on the fence with respect to staying in the lineup

I grew up a big Pirate fan. I used to memorize the lineup and follow each game. I’m 65 so I watched Clemente, Alou, Stargell, Clendenon and so on. As time has passed, it has been increasingly harder to keep them relevant as far as spending the time and money. I understand the “big picture “ of building for the future but I’m beginning to think the future for the Pirates never gets here. I have seen very few owners shoot themselves in the foot as much as this one. There is no concern for the major league quality of their product. It is embarrassing they don’t spend more to field a major league team. Even a bone like letting Cruz start the season in Pittsburgh would generate some excitement. It’s sad to see this once-proud franchise with this owner in this shape.
Zeise
11:24
There is no reason to believe the future is ever really coming

I still think the Pens goaltending is going to hurt them in the playoffs. Should the Pens have gone after Fleury or another goaltender at the deadline? I don't have a lot of confidence in our tandem.
