This may be the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. Of course coming out of California, it isn’t shocking at all

Hi Paul. Would the Penguins be four-time first-round losers had Jim Rutherford not made a series of disastrous moves after the last Stanley Cup win? Some of those high round draft picks he traded away for essentially nothing would be arriving at the big league team about now and would have provided a nice boost to the core, like Guentzel and Rust did during the Stanley Cup run.
Zeise
12:06
No, I think Rutherford made some bad moves personnel wise but his reasoning was sound

If you are in charge of Boston Management, do you replace Hextall and Burke before addressing the Penguins offseason moves?
Zeise
12:07
I probably clean house in front office and management and that probably includes Sullivan. It is stale and not working any more

After watching the Rangers-Hurricanes game Tuesday, it is painfully obvious that a full-strength Penguin team was more than capable of reaching the conference final. Does that suggest that maybe keeping the core together another couple of years isn't a bad idea?
Zeise
12:09
As I wrote the other day, I don’t believe you blow up the roster. I would change the voice in the coaches box and philosophy some and try and play a different way going forward but I would keep the trip and Rust together and go from there

Speaking of NIL money, I assume the service academies don't offer it. Do you think it has or will make it even more difficult for the service academies to recruit football and basketball players?
Zeise
12:10
I don’t think it will change one bit recruiting for the service academics

academies. People that go there aren’t picking there for football or basketball and certainly not NIL money

This version of the Pirates might be the most unwatchable of all. You don't seem to believe that the draft picks at the AA level are going to be able to make the team competitive in a couple of years. If that is the case, what does GM PZ do to make the team competitive?
Zeise
12:14
Yes it is bad because the young guys aren’t real exciting and the old guys are mostly journeymen
Gene
12:14
I have been a Pirate fan for over 60 years but the last few years it’s been tough to watch. Do you think they will ever be competitive again?
Zeise
12:15
They will be competitive from time to time but I don’t think they will be World Series contenders any time soon

What do you think will happen again first, the Steelers make it to the AFC championship game or the Penguins to the Stanley Cup finals?
Zeise
12:15
The Steelers. It feels like the Pens are going to undergo a major facelift

hi paul, thanks for your excellent chats. are the penguins suffering today from the lost high draft picks that were traded away during the last gm's reign?  it would seem to me that the return from these trades does not have appreciable value. the penguins, traditionally, have been excellent in the choosing of their draft picks, including their international picks.
Zeise
12:17
Well as I said before - they went for it every year and I’m OK with that. You had the trio of stars you had to try and maximize their window. That being said, the rebuild process would be further along for sure if they had their draft picks

Still boycotting the USFL Maulers? I think they have won as many games as the Pirates have this week.

What do you do with Kyrie Irving if you're the Nets? Sean Marks says they need players who are available. He's so often not for one reason or another. Same question about the 76ers and Ben Simmons.
Zeise

I move on because he is has become a bit of a clown show. And he seems to be a guy who no longer prioritizes winning. I move on from him and get a few role players with the money you save

Should the Pens break the bank and sign a top goalie in free agency (if one is available)?  Seems like they are wasting the last years of Crosby's career with subpar goaltending.
Zeise
12:20
No they can get a veteran goalie for a good price to pair with Jarry. They have other areas they need to fortify

I despise the targeting rule in college football and how the NFL overly protects QBs.  That said, the NHL is equally absurd allowing head shots.  The Rangers literally swung the series by purposely taking out Crosby.  What's the solution?
Zeise
12:21
It is simple - officials just call penalties on stuff that is a penalty

Any thoughts on the Trevor Bauer suspension?  If the NFL takes note, D Watson might never play again.  PS:  Didn't Kobe do worse and somehow become a hero?
Zeise
12:23
You are comparing a lot of things that I’m not sure are comparable. On Bauer the suspension is way too long given precedent in these cases but he is a bad guy MLB would like to go away so that’s why the hammer is down on him

I'm a tOSU season ticket holder.  Occasionally the Steelers make a pick that, based upon my seeing the players live, I immediately love or hate.  On the hate side were D Bush (he got lit up by the Buckeyes), Green (never stood out in B10 and his measurables were so bad it was almost obvious he was not an NFL C) and Mike Adams (dude had zero heart and loved weed).  Were there any picks this year where your gut told you that the Steelers just wasted one?
Zeise
12:24
Not really, I liked their draft. I am not sure about the DL from A&M and how he fits in their defense and he needs to bulk up but he could be a good player for them

Hi Paul.  I read that Louis Riddick has apparently withdrawn as a candidate for the GM job.  Have there been any further developments regarding Kevin Colbert’s replacement?  Thanks.
Zeise
12:25
Yes they have done second interviews with at least four of them and I think the next step is getting down to two finalists for one more round of interviews

Hi Paul.  What’s your gut feeling about Tuitt playing this coming season?    Also, have you heard if Alualu is expected to be healthy by September?  Thanks Paul.
Zeise
12:26
Alualu will be ready to go. Tuitt I am just not so sure. Again I would not count on him

Hello Paul.  I know you’re a big supporter of Archie’s.  Have you ever eaten at Piper’s Pub?  They have been closed in part because of Covid and hope to reopen from what I’ve been told.
Zeise
12:26
Yes Pipers is a nice little watering hole as well

12:26
If the NFL suspends Watson, how many games do you think it will be? Thanks.
Zeise
12:27
I would say no less than 4 and no more than 6. That seems to be right
