Hello Paul.  Why did Pitt cancel the visit of Hood-Schifino?  What have you learned about this?  Any information or insight you can provide is appreciated.  Thank you Paul.
Zeise

It is very simple - they have another top 100 player at his position about to commit tomorrow. He gave no indication that he was anywhere close to committing. He has had almost two years to figure this out. Jeff Capel had to move on and fill the spot. It was the right decision.

I tend to think your column on Pitt football this week is correct. However, the stability that Pat Narduzzi has brought needs to turn into wins quickly. I'd say 17 regular season wins over the next two years is a must. They should be at a point where they consistently win 8 or 9 games a year.
Zeise
12:07
I would agree and that’s what I wrote - they have been patient but now it needs to pay off. If this year is a bust then they need to maybe think of some different direction but the quickest and best path to winning is staying the course

Hey Paul, if you’re the Pirates’ GM, who do you take with the first pick in the draft?  Have you heard if the Pirates are leaning towards any 1or 2 players?   Thanks.
Zeise
12:09
It sounds like they are leaning away from the two Vanderbilt pitchers and towards either the catcher or shortstop. I say take the catcher. Behind Stallings there isn’t anyone in the system at that position

An article you wrote a few weeks ago said that the Pirates should attempt to sign Hayes,Moran,Frazier and Reynolds to long term contracts.I could not agree with you more. All too often prospects turn into suspects. The above four players are at least a known quality. What the Pirates do with these players will tell me a lot about their intentions. As someone approaching their expiration date,I dare say I will not live long enough to see the pirate become competitive let alone win a championship.

I think the idea of hitting on all the prospects at the same time is a pipe dream. And if you have a small base of talent to build around your path to becoming good again is much easier. I know all the reasons why they want to trade every single person with a pulse but I don’t think you need to strip it down to the point where it is beyond recognition. There are a few salvageable parts on this team

Good morning, Paul. The older I get, the more that I feel as though many/most sports analysts have no idea what they’re talking about. I’m NOT referring to you, BTW. I remember 10 YEARS AGO, after a loss, analysts saying Tom Brady was slowing down and that he just wasn’t the same player. I’d be looking at the TV and wondering just what they were talking about. This whole relatively new thing about the Steelers O-line being good pass blockers but not good run blockers didn’t exist just 2-3 years ago when they had a pretty good running game as well. Also, are you ever embarrassed by the afternoon team on 93.7 The Fan. Turning a whole afternoon show into a schtick-based “how can we find a way to make people mad” thing is so classless and unprofessional. I have no problem criticizing the Steelers but when it’s just on the menu, it sounds terrible and one of the reasons why I hardly ever listen anymore. Thanks!
Zeise
12:14
Well the thing is the Steelers offensive line wasn’t very good at run blocking last season and there were reasons for that - DeCastro was banged up all season, Okarafor is a better pass blocker than run blocker which is why he lost the battle with Zach Banner in training camp, Pouncey wasn’t Pouncey of ok’d
12:15
old and Alejandro Villanueva is a better pass blocker as well and last year just looked old

Hey Paul.  Has new golf fan Joe Starkey asked to hit the links with you yet?
Zeise
12:16
Yes I’ve invited him many times and he is always big timing me for his country club pals and for Jim Colony. I mean the guy has got the chance to play Montour Heights more than me and he just started!!

Hey Paul! First time long time. Do you foresee JuJu being a distraction this year if he doesn't get put on the outside a lot like he wants to? I know he is playing for big money this year for next year's free agency.
Zeise
12:18
No I don’t think he will turn into a problem. He is a guy who always plays hard, gives maximum effort and wants to help the team win. The other thing is since he is playing for a contract there is no value in becoming a locker room cancer

Hi Paul. Will the Pirates ever have another player worthy of  building a statue for?
Zeise
12:19
Ke’Bryan Hayes!!! I don’t know that’s a great question. I would think law of averages suggests they will but the thing is - will anyone at that level stay with the team long enough to merit it?
Ryan
12:19
Good afternoon Paul who wins the us open and what’s going on with the buccos
Zeise
12:20
The Pirates will not win the US Open, or anything else this year! I will go with Brooks Koepka, who has become one of my favorite athletes with his trolling of that Bryson Dechambeau clown.

12:20
Who wins Islanders-Lightning, and can Marc Andre beat either one of them (if they take care of the Canadians)?
Zeise
12:21
I like Tampa over Islanders, Vegas. Over Tampa.....

12:21
Is there a chance that Pitt can be the biggest football story in town for the next couple of years as the Steelers seem destined for a couple of pretty mediocre seasons?
Zeise
12:22
Biggest? No the Steelers are and always will be kings of this town. But Pitt could become the teak that wins the most and thus generates more of a buzz
TPHunter
12:22
Gerry thinks Justin Spieth wins the Open. Who is your favorite?
Zeise
12:23
Spieth will have like a 6 to 8 hole stretch where he chokes on putts and loses the event. I like Koepka

I know the writers are not allowed to report on any of the schemes the Steelers have worked on at OTAs and mini-camp, but are you allowed to report on how the reps were split up between the four QB's?
Zeise
12:24
You can report on nothing except what they tell you you can report on
Scott

The Purgatory Pirates seem to be mired in an endless cycle. They trade good players for prospects.  If any of those acquired assets become good players, they trade them for more prospects.  Will this approach ever end? How will they stop it and start being able to keep good MLB players?
Zeise
12:28
It isn’t just the Pirates, it is baseball in general. Most teams operate like this now. The Pirates take it to extremes but teams have figured out that long term contracts are not good for their bottom line and they are mot usually gonna pay off in wins
Mercury
12:28
When do you expect to see any indications that the Pirates rebuilding process is working and what would those indications need to be?
Zeise
12:29
I would hope that 2023 they are fielding a team that has a chance to have a winning record and 2024 they make a playoff push. If they don’t do that then this whole thing is a waste
TPHunter
12:29
I don't get this whole under slot pay strategy that seems common in the MLB draft. No matter who gets picked No. 1 overall, why wouldn't he expect to receive all the money?
Zeise
12:30
Baseball economics make absolutely zero sense other than - the owners pocket more and more money and are happy about it!
TPHunter
12:30
Is it scary that Mitch Keller's career path with the Pirates is beginning to resemble Glasnow's?
Zeise
12:31
Well they could trade him for Chris Archer and complete the circle of life!!
What else you got for me today?
12:34
Are you a believer in Dwayne Haskins???
Lets get the chat moving again!!
Scott

Why does Danny Smith still have a job? His units have never been anything above average.  He should have been fired after they allowed Cleveland to recover the free kick after a safety a couple years ago. He should have been reminding them during the timeout that it is a live ball in that situation.  His players treated it like a punt.
