Thinking about the weekly K'hai Tom question/complaint from yesterday's mailbag got me thinking about Rule 5 players and wondering how often they end up becoming decent major league players. I can't really think of search terms to use to look this up so I'll just ask if you can think of any Rule 5 players the Pirates have gotten over the years who really panned out or if you can think of any who were the most successful ones anywhere.

Will college athletes be able to sign their own contracts with shoe companies now like professionals can? If not, why not? If so, what happens at a "Nike" school like Penn State if adidas or New Balance does a deal with a football or basketball player, or even a cross country runner?

They can sign with a shoe company. They just can’t wear the stuff while they are playing if it is a rival shoe company. So for instance a kid who plays for a Nike school can sign with adidas, he just can’t wear his shoes and gear when he is representing his team or playing a a game

While the pirates wallow yearly what is the status of 20 year old Pnc park. Does it need upgrades soon?  And what percent of it was paid by tax dollars?

I’m sure there will be some upgrades on it soon because it is so old. That’s generally the shelf life of any of these stadiums, they need upgrades and whatnot

What percent chance is there that the pirates 1st round pick like Appel a few years ago does not sign either out of not wanting to be brought up in pirates organization like elway-Baltimore or $?

I don’t think so, I think the Pirates will do their research to figure out before hand if this is a player who they want to take and be able to sign

It is Kevin Dotson. Kevin Dotson. A lineman. It was in May/June. They don’t play until Sept. It is a total non story

Well certainly NOT Amanda..... I like Mike in Oakland, he does a good job. Pete in Squirrel Hill is fine, he has a lot of knowledge of history. Anthony in Oakland is tremendous

Albeit a bad 2020 season, do you think the Decastro news might set this oline up for disaster?  All new starters or returning starters with limited experience. I think this season could ugly fast.

No I think it is fine. The line will play together all training camp and get some cohesion and chemistry and get better as the season goes on

Thanks for the chats Paul.  When is the last speed team to win the cup?  When we won we had some bruisers...why wouldn't Sullivan try to adapt.  Hard to imagine him not being the coach here.  Great coaches adapt to their personnel.

But he has been very stubborn about his system. The teams that have won since the Pens have all had some combination of size and speed. The Pens need some size and a much better goalie

You can’t trade Bryan Reynolds, right? Without an extension he’s only be around for 1-2 of the Pirates “window” but even if that’s the case you’ve got to keep him no?

It would be foolish to trade him, very foolish. He is a guy you can win with. He is a very good baseball player

I think they will get a decent return. I just don’t think it is going to be this huge haul of players that most people think he will bring

Yes I do. I think they will get a cornerback late in training camp once teams start waiving veterans. They will get a bargain player that way

With the new college rules, won't the big, SEC schools just use them to their competitive and recruiting advantage "promising" the 5 star recruits financial advantages that other schools cannot offer?
