Let’s get started

Breaking news - DeShaun Watson got 11 games and a $5 million fine

Watching Pirates-Orioles a couple weeks ago brought back some memories and brought up this question: would there be a Major League roster spot today for Tim Foli?  Decent fielder, totally unselfish about giving up at-bats to move baserunners, no power.  I don't know if any team looks for that any more.
Zeise
12:02
That sounds like about half of the Pirates current roster, so yes!
Mark
12:02
The Patriots-Panthers combined practices devolved into two days of brawls.  It seems many of these get-togethers end up this way.  Are they worth it?
Zeise
12:03
Yes if you want to get a chance to play against different teams and schemes. So what there was a little scuffle, it is not a big deal

12:03
if pitt starts out 3-0,,,,look out,,,if they start 3-0
Zeise
12:04
True. They should handle WVU. The Tennessee game could be tricky. And people are forgetting the third game is at Western Michigan

any chance ben tries to come back for more money, he is so  greedy i wouldn't be suprised , how about you paul?
Zeise
12:05
No he is done. I would be shocked

12:05
Paul, what do you make of Oniel Cruz striking out at nearly 40% of the time?
Zeise
12:06
He is a young player that is trying to figure it out. There will be growing pains. If he is still doing that three years from now it is a problem

12:06
Will Devin Bush make the pro bowl this year?
Zeise
12:07
The guy can barely beat out Robert Spillane, so no
Sam
12:07
Paul, what is a reasonable return for Rudolph?  I am having a hard time envisioning anything more than a conditional 7th round pick that could elevate to something more...if anything at all.  Does trading him really make sense?  The Steelers aren't playing behind a great line, an injury to Mitch and Kenny could put them in a bad spot.  Curious what are your thoughts.
Zeise
12:08
The Buddy Ryan return “I will take a six pack, and it doesn’t even have to be cold” But seriously, you are right a conditional 6th-7th round pick
Gene Takovic
12:09
Paul, If you were the HC, what would you do with Devin Bush?
Zeise
12:09
Put him out on the field and hope he gets it done. You have no choice
Frank

Paul realistically if Pitt can win their first two home games with WVU and Tennessee, I think they put themselves into the top 10 and become a CFP contender. Yes there will be a Miami or UNC that gives them fits but I think it is all in front of them. Thoughts?
Zeise
12:10
I picked them to go 10-2 and win the Coastal. So that is what my expectations are
Jimmy McGill
12:11
Paul, Are you keeping Snell, Mcfarland, and Warren behind Najee?
Zeise
12:11
Yes
Saul Goodman
12:11
Who stays and who goes from the WR group?
Zeise
12:13
Diontae Johnson, Chase Claypool, George Pickens, Gunner Oldndjsjsbsssnski and Anthony Miller seem safe. The rest will be very interesting
Richard

If you believe the Pirates are actually in a rebuild that will pay off in a couple of years, the players who will comprise that winning team should be already on the team or fairly well along in their minor league development.  Using existing players, who would you see as the starting line-up in 2024? Include as many starting pitchers as you believe we have in the system. (Please play along for the fun of it.)
Zeise
12:14
I used to believe that. I no longer do.

Paul, enjoy your work! Two big time games to start for Pitt followed by a rematch with a Western Michigan team who beat them last year. If they're able to start 3-0 followed by Rhode Island and two winnable home league games, we're talking 6-0 heading to the back half of the schedule which gets tougher. Things could get interesting by then. Can you see that playing out for this team?
Zeise
12:15
Absolutely. The only game a loss would be acceptable is Tennessee. They should be 5-1 at worst

If Paul Narduzzi had a chance to leave Pitt for a BIG school such as Indiana, or Minnesota, would he be go?
Zeise
12:17
No. I’m not sure he is leaving ever. He is getting paid handsomely and is at the stage of his career where stability is far more important than chasing money or jobs
Roger
12:17
As we go through another agonizing rebuild with our beloved Buccos, we constantly hear from “ownership” that this is what it’s like for “small market teams. Isn’t Milwaukee a small market? How do they remain competitive most years, sign decent free agents? What’s the story?
Zeise
12:18
When you hire good baseball people who make good baseball decisions you can be successful anywhere. The Pirates problem is they haven’t
Marked
12:18
Hi Paul,  I guess this may be redundant but I was curious about what you knew about where the Pirate coaching staff and developmental people
Zeise
12:20
Based on how poorly these players are developing, if there is not a complete overhaul and house cleaning of the scouting/development/instructors department then the Pirates deserve ripped

Hi Paul. Once again thanks for your chats. Always look forward to them. Simple question today. Whatever happened to directional punting, ie the coffin corner kick? Seems to be a lost art. Even if the ball goes out at the 15 yd line, it’s still a win vs an all too common TB.
Zeise
12:21
I think they still look to do that but the thing is there is more of an emphasis on hang time than anything else
