The Steelers were planning on paying Big Chest and the Rapper huge dollars. There is overhang from Big Chest, but don't the Steelers have some extra money for the Dupree surprise or others?
Paul Zeise
12:01
I do think they get some relief after this season and Bud Dupree is a very interesting discussion. I mean they are gonna have to pay him a lot of money if he keeps doing what he is doing aren’t they? They really don’t have anyone else at that position. He is a classic example of a player who is playing for a contract and having a huge season
Jaylen Jammin'
12:01
How good is Jaylen as a RB? Is he a nice third down back with one good surprise game against NE last year or can he really be the main guy?
Paul Zeise
12:03
I don’t think he is an every down running back in the NFL. He is versatile though and he is a guy who can make plays in a variety of ways. I love him as a third down back and player who is used in some passing situations and obviously in the wildcat but I think there is a limited role for him

Love Minkah. And I wonder if part of the decision to trade a No. 1 is that the top four guys from three rounds are going into their fourth contract year next year...Watt, Juju, Conner and Sutton...and maybe they needed not to have to sign a Number One. Nice problem to have but it is a problem.
Paul Zeise
12:08
I truly don’t think there was any other factor in the decision except the Steelers had a glaring need at safety and he is an excellent player. It has worked out well so far.

12:08
What do you think an average year stats for Swann or Stallworth would be in their prime in today's NFL w Ben throwing to them?
Paul Zeise
12:09
They would have astronomical numbers. There is no question. As it was they had fairly impressive numbers playing with Terry Bradshaw!!!
Secondarily Speaking
12:09
Our DBs are playing as well as they have in a decade. Haden, Nelson, Fitz and Edmunds are all actually great to competent on EVERY play. So refreshing. Plus we have decent nickle and dime options. How many teams are still better?
Paul Zeise
12:11
The secondary is much improved no doubt. Steven Nelson and Minkah Fitzpatrick have been welcome additions. I don’t know where they rank but they hey are far closer to the top now than they have been in a long time. It also helps that the front Seven gets lots of pressure on QBs!

What would you say redskins give a 1st and 2nd for tomlin and if so ,who would you want as next coach?
Paul Zeise
12:14
I would  thin the Steelers would not be willing to part with Tomlin, especially for that package. But let’s play along and say they do. The next coach should be someone from outside of the organization and preferably an offensive minded guy. I don’t know - does Mike Munchak excite you?
Gene
12:15
If James Conner doesn’t play Sunday which practice squad player is active Hall or James?
Paul Zeise
12:16
Darrin Hall just arrived so I cannot imagine they are gonna give him a helmet this week unless it is an absolute emergency

This seems to be the time for the Steelers to have a dedicated quarterback coach, with three inexperienced QB's.  Has there been any indications the Steelers are looking for one.  RF would appear to have little time to really help develop this group.
Paul Zeise
12:16
What do you mean, they have Randy Fichtner!!! 🤣🤣🤣

Where oh where has my McCullers gone?  Oh where oh where can he be
Where oh where has my McCullers gone?  Oh where or where can he be?

How can you miss him, he’s huge!!!

What grade would you give Tomlin so far this season?
Paul Zeise
12:22
I give him a B- and that could easily move to a B+ or an A if they win a few games against good teams. He has done an excellent job of holding things together but he has three wins against bad teams. He needs to now start beating some of the better teams on the schedule. If he gets this team to the playoffs it will be his best coaching job no matter how far they go once in the playoffs.

Paul,  What is it with all the RB's getting hurt?  Has Conner played a game without getting some type of injury?  Thanks.
Paul Zeise
12:23
Conner has had injury issues going back to his days at Pitt
12:25
but that doesn’t make him special. That is a tough position and those guys take a beating. It is why teams are very slow to give those guys big money deals. They are all one hit away from being out to the year and they take the most hits of any of the players on the field

12:27
Paul,  How would you rate Baron's performance so far?  Been a disappointment I think.  Definitely past his prime.  Thank you.
Paul Zeise
12:29
He has had a hard time staying healthy and that hasn’t been good. And I’ve been underwhelmed when he does play. I thought he would have more of an impact to be honest. Hopefully he settles in and gets comfortable and starts making plays because the Steelers need him to be good

Paul, thanks for the opportunity, great chat. Question:  Rudolph has looked shaky in every start so far, but has gotten much better as the game goes on. In your opinion, is there anything the coaching staff can do to get him better out of the gate, or are these just normal jitters that we'll have to live with until he truly gets more acclimated to starting in the NFL?
Paul Zeise
12:37
I think this last game it had a lot to do with the fact that he hadn’t played in almost a month. I really think his nervous jitters and all that will be far less this week. The big thing too from Monday was the guys around him all got off to slow starts too. The offensive line struggled, the receivers weren’t getting open and they couldn’t run the ball. As they all settled in, Rudolph got better too. He needs to just trust his preparation and be a little less unsure of himself when the game starts.

Paul, do you think it odd that the Dolphins targeted Joe Haden so much, or is there a perception that he's lost a step and is no longer the Steelers' best corner? Thanks!
Paul Zeise
12:39
Not at all. I said it on my show the other night - at that position guys seem to go downhill almost over night. He still is a good football player, a veteran who knows how to be effective but  the has definitely lost a little bit and is not the player he was even two years ago. I fear teams will start to figure this out and see if they can exploit it a little bit

With a better QB and defense than the Colts, and homefield advantage we should win sunday's game, right?
Paul Zeise
12:41
No. The Steelers can win but I’m not sure the Steelers have the edge at QB. The Colts are tough, disciplined and well coached. This is is gonna be a really tough game for the Steelers

It seems like the tightht ends have not been targeted as much since Rudolph became the starter. With the receivers group as a whole struggling, I'm surprised McDonald and Vannett haven't been more active in the passing game. Your thoughts?
Paul Zeise
12:42
Both guys have to get open first. And I think both have been disappointing so far. Rudolph is just finding his way, I’m assuming he will keep building on what he is doing

Paul, with the news today that Chickillo has been removed from the commissioner's exempt list, and the news yesterday that charges have been dropped, do you see the Steelers disciplining him internally, and/or cutting him? I haven't read the specific allegations or details, but if there is any evidence at all that he assaulted his girlfriend he should be released (in my opinion). If, say, the Steelers reinstate his status and video or any other evidence appears after the fact (as it did with Ray Rice), then the team will come out looking particularly awful.
Paul Zeise
12:48
I don’t see much more than him being sat out maybe one more game. Any allegations of domestic abuse are serious but the fact that the charges have been dropped probably helps his cause. It sounds like typical two people had a few too many and had a confrontation with each other. I just don’t think it will rise to the level of a long suspension.

Why am I so bipolar when it comes to drafting WRs? Some truly great late round picks in combo with multiple early round disasters. Just the nature of the game and humans in general?
Paul Zeise
12:50
That is a tough position to gauge that’s why. And that’s especially true with the growth of the spread offense college football. The skill set is a little different in the pros. Colbert isn’t the only one who is all over the map drafting receivers - there are probably as many first round busts at that position as there are first round stars

Are there any RB’s, on another teams practice squad, that the Steelers might try to add to the active roster if need be? Due to all the injuries. Or, do you feel comfortable with the Rb’s already in the building?
