The Phillies probably aim for Gilbert or Kirby if they're moving Stott, so this type of trade probably wouldn't be a 1-for-1.

Also, if Stott is dealt, the Phils suddenly have another hole to fill at second base

Is it time to trade Realmuto while he has some value?
Mark P
1:47
Likewise, moving Realmuto creates a big void at catcher
Scranton Strangler
1:47
Ever been to Philly? Or to Scranton, the Electric City?
Mark P
1:48
I've never been to Philadelphia, sadly.

Weirdly I have been to Scranton, as we stopped off to get some quick dinner on our way to New York City.  Yes, we purposely stopped in Scranton just because of the Office tie-in.
Trout
1:49
I enjoy watching birds games. do u see me making a hometown return ?
Mark P
1:51
Trout undoubtedly wants to win, and losing Ohtani might be (though Trout has never indicated this) the final straw to get him to demand a trade out of Los Angeles.

Now, coming back to Philly and being a hometown hero now tasked with getting the Phillies over the top?  That's an enormous and unique amount of pressure, so if Trout did demand a trade, he could direct himself to another contender.  Some ballplayers like to keep their home life and professional life separate, so I can understand why Trout might not want the added hometown-hero burden
trading Schwarber
1:52
What sort of trade value would Schwarber have, if the Phillies decided to put him on the market? Also if the Phillies keep him, could be play some 1B to help keep everyone rested?
Mark P
1:54
He'd have plenty of trade value, moreso than Castellanos due to the lesser contract.  In theory, trading Schwarber might be a more viable move to solving the OF logjam, but I also think he's too productive for the Phillies to consider moving

What would a Phillies/Angels trade for Trout look like?
Mark P
1:58
In a world where Trout wants out, remember that he has a no-trade clause.  So if he indicates that he'll only waive it for the Phillies or maybe a couple of teams, that gives Philly some leverage.

If the Angels still want to be competitive in a post-Trout world and aren't planning to entirely rebuild, this might be a scenario where Castellanos (and Walker?) are dealt, as part of the offset for Philly taking on Trout's contract.  Some young talent would obviously also have to be involved, however, and if it did turn into a war of farm systems for Trout, the Phils don't measure up
Dealing Dave
1:59
Are McGarry and Abel still off limits ? And does the success of Clearwater (A) provide any additional trade options?
Mark P
2:00
Painter's Tommy John surgery makes it even less likely that Abel is dealt, in my view.  McGarry might still be slightly more available if he does indeed only have a bullpen future, but again, the Phillies aren't too likely to move hm either
Scott H
2:00
Gee, do you think the Phils might pick up the 13.5 Mil option on Scott Kingery?
Mark P
2:00
Hot take: no
Oliver
2:00
For all the talk of Harper playing first base, why not move Castellanos? He can't play the outfield but 1B might work for him.
Mark P
2:02
I guess Castellanos volunteered to work out at 1B when Hoskins got hurt, but I'm not sure what happened there.  On paper, you'd think this positional change would benefit all parties, so I'm not sure why it couldn't be at least explored.
Depth Concerns
2:03
Beyond the OF, the depth across the rest of the offensive pieces are weak. Stubbs doesn’t give them the solid back up numbers for JT, Sosa has held his own for the infield. What moves could they make to solidify the bench?
Mark P
2:05
This is another argument against re-signing Hoskins.  If the Phillies instead added a multi-positional utilityman type, this hypothetical player and Sosa can basically act as a two-man bench.

It might also be that Weston Wilson is already this very player, and just needs a shot in the big leagues to show what he can do
Pat
2:06
Do you see the Phillies potentially finding a way to offload Taijuan Walker this offseason?
Mark P
2:06
Since everyone needs pitching, yes, but a trade is naturally tricky given Walker's underwhelming season.
2:07
And as noted in the chat, Walker won't be traded (if at all) before the Nola situation is solved one way or the other, whether that's Nola re-signed or another starter acquired.
Fred
2:07
Kimbrel coming back? After the way things ended can't imagine the fanbase wants him to return.
Mark P
2:08
What do you mean, the Philly fans are known for their patience and understanding.  Examples include their support of Trea Turner this past summer, and.....uh....I'm sure there are other times over the Phillies' 141 seasons.
Billy P
2:09
Would you try and extend Suarez given his playoff performance and if they end up not re signing Nola? What would an extension look like if so?
Mark P
2:10
From my view yes, Suarez has done enough to merit a long-term commitment.  I guess since he's just entering his arbitration years now, his arb numbers will be limited enough that the Phillies can enjoy the relative bargain for now and then wait and see a bit longer, before deciding on an extension
Kyle
2:10
Forget Ohtani. Why not spend the $500 million on Soto next year? Middleton promised to spend stupid money. Isn’t it time he delivered?
Mark P
2:11
Wait, you don't think Middleton has delivered on his promise to spend big?!
D
2:11
Do the Phillies cut bait on Bohm (trade him) or do they hope for/work on another step up in his development?
Mark P
2:12
A case can be made to move Bohm, even if it does leave a hole at 3B.  He still has enough past value that teams might think he can still blossom elsewhere, and they might even be right.  But if he posts another season that's only okay, it'll start to look like this is just who Bohm is, and his trade value gets all the more limited
Gerry
2:13
What does the future look like for the Phillies?
Mark P
2:14
The immediate future is still very bright.  Obviously they have holes to fill and needs to address, but the Phillies are in a lot better shape than most teams.  At this point I certainly like they chances of making the postseason again.
Nola to Braves?
2:15
What if the Braves let Morton walk and used that money to sign Nola?
Mark P
2:16
Signing big free agents isn't really Anthopoulos' style, but a Nola pursuit can't be entirely ruled out. I do think Atlanta is likelier to pursue a pitching upgrade via trade than via free agency.
Wilbur
2:17
What's the plan for Mick Abel?
Mark P
2:18
Start the season in Triple-A, and if all goes well, a callup around midseason or the All-Star break seems feasible
Ooklah the Mok
2:19
What would it take for the Phils to get Yanks b/u catcher Higashioka?
Mark P
2:19
Not a ton, and he would be a slight upgrade over Stubbs.  Maybe too slight for the Phils to bother when they can just keep Stubbs
Mike
2:21
Starting pitching and first base the priorities?
Mark P
2:21
SP absolutely, 1B less so because Harper is the fallback.  I'd put the bullpen ahead of first base on the priority list
