Hello everyone! Welcome to free agent frenzy 2022!
It's been a little while since I was able to do a chat, so I'm really looking forward to this
Start firing in some topics and I'll get started in a few minutes

I'm a brand new hockey fan who is starting to follow the sport a lot closer. Who are some intriguing free agents and teams I should be keeping an eye on during this free agent frenzy?
Gavin Lee
9:06
First of all, welcome! Always nice to hear from new fans
9:07
This year, there is a true superstar at the very top of the free agent list. Johnny Gaudreau, or as he's known "Johnny Hockey"  is a 28-year-old winger who just put up 115 points (second in the league) and can completely change a team's offensive attack.
He's expected to go back to a team near his home of South Jersey, though that doesn't narrow it down all that much!
9:08
There is also a player like Ondrej Palat--a two-time Stanley Cup winner that looks like he's leaving the only team he's ever known.
9:09
He's kind of a swiss army knife of a hockey player, good at just about everything.
9:10
For fun teams to watch, how about those Ottawa Senators! Not exactly the team most would suggest since they've struggled for a while but this offseason has been an impressive showing so far
They've been linked to Claude Giroux, one of the most dynamic playmakers in the world--even if he is a little past his prime

If teams are not allowed to be in contact with players until noon, why are deals being reported already
Gavin Lee
9:11
There is a bit of a misconception here about this rule
Teams are not allowed to contact players--unless given permission.
For many, once negotiations break down, that permission is given (mostly because it comes back around from the same agents)
9:12
A player like Kuemper, for instance, has been clearly going to market since the Avalanche acquired Georgiev, so they likely gave him permission to talk to teams--even if they couldn't yet actually file paperwork

Will the Flyers do anything?
Gavin Lee
9:12
They are trying
9:13
I think van Riemsdyk has been offered to just about every team in the league by now
Y2KAK
9:13
Start with the obvious question, where is Johnny Hockey signing?
Gavin Lee
9:13
That leads to this. It's Philly, I think, if they feel comfortable in clearing the space
9:14
We'll see though. New Jersey lurking, obviously
Brian

Hey Gavin, how does Colorado replace Kadri, Burky, Kubel and Manson? They showed depth us what you need and all their depth is now gone.
Gavin Lee
9:15
It sounds like the Avalanche are actually going to try and stay in the mix for Kadri, though that auction I imagine is going to get too expensive eventually
The key is that you can't just keep bringing everyone back, or you'll quickly run out of money
Remember they have Lehkonen to sign too--he's more important than Burakovsky in my mind
9:16
The stars are so good there that they'll make new successful depth players out of scrap heap buys today
Steel City

Morning! It's a great day to be a hockey fan!
Gavin Lee
9:17
Amen

Who do the leafs get as a back up?  My first choice would be Comrie or Samsanov.
Gavin Lee
9:18
Don't get me wrong, I would be going after one of them too..but I have a feeling that Maple Leafs fans might be disappointed by the result

What’s the truth about Burns to Dallas?
Gavin Lee
9:18
They are definitely interested but it doesn't sound imminent
9:19
There are ties through DeBoer and Pavelski but I wouldn't be surprised if more teams enter that space as names come off the board today
Why rush, if you're San Jose
Mike
9:19
Thoughts on the penguins moves? Fairly impressed they got letang malkin rust and rakell at 22.3 annually on the cap
Gavin Lee
9:19
It's probably too many years for all four but that doesn't really matter
They're going for it with Crosby, and he deserves that
9:20
It'll be a rebuild down the road--and one that I don't think will be as painful as everyone seems to think
Taylor

It seems the Sens will sign Giroux today, but they really need a top 4 defenseman. Will it still be possible to land one in free agency given all the young talent they need to eventually extend?
