Out of the four, I think Tarasenko is the most likely option. They've been connected to him in the past, and Lou hasn't pulled off anything unexpected in the free agent market since the 1800s. I also think he'll come in at a lower cap hit than Duchene when all is said and done. They're obviously aggressive in wanting to make some sort of splash, though, willing to part with a second-round pick so they didn't have to deal with the cost of a Bailey buyout.

  1. Why do you think nashville bought out duchene…..was there no trade market for him? Where do you see him ending up.
Josh Erickson
9:36
I think I alluded to this earlier, but I like Detroit as an option, either to bump Copp down to 3C or play on Copp's wing on the second line. If not, I think Carolina will be in on him heavily (although that's speculation).
9:38
As to why Trotz bought him out, I'm really not sure. It was the most puzzling buyout by far. It's not pleasant -- lots of dead cap in years 2 and 3 of it, especially since they're still accommodating the Turris buyout. I think he wants a clean slate, but I'm surprised they didn't just try and retain salary and hold onto him. I think he could fetch $6MM on the market, he really wasn't bad this year at all. If I'm managing Nashville, I would rather retain 25% for three years and trade him (even if it was for future considerations!) than deal with the buyout. I don't like the move.

Do you see the Wild doing anything?
Josh Erickson

Their summer starts whenever the Gustavsson extension gets done

What to you think Panthers will do with their defence. For the moment they online got three good ones, and two of them are in doubt for the start of the season?
Josh Erickson

There are some rumblings about Gostisbehere, although I doubt Florida matches the term he could get somewhere else. If they're only willing to dish out a short-term deal to a puck-moving defender, their options wither pretty quickly. Erik Gustafsson comes to mind and feels like another breakout candidate there, he posted very strong underlying numbers in Washington this season.

Think Detroit's real focus is on the net. If they are going to make a trade it would be for Hellebuck.
Josh Erickson
9:42
I don't think anyone's trading for Hellebuyck until he reduces his salary demands on an extension. Everyone pretty much backed away from talks once he made it known he wanted $9MM+

What will the jackets do ?? Trade a dman away ??
Josh Erickson
9:44
That's what I'd do, not sure about Jarmo. If I'm moving someone, I'm moving Peeke. Affordable right-shot guy with cost certainty ($2.75MM per year until 2026). They'd have to pay to unload Gudbranson, I think burying him in Cleveland is a more likely scenario. Don't think a Gudbranson trade or buyout is coming until they're close to playoff contention

Do the Hawks make any moves this weekend?
Josh Erickson
9:45
Save for a potential Domi reunion, and maybe a depth D-man, I think they're done. I envision them going into the season with a Mrazek/Soderblom tandem in the crease

What Blues defensemen gets moved? Is there a market for any of them? Have to get cap room from somewhere!
Josh Erickson
9:46
Leddy's my answer, solely because he has the lowest cap hit. I think Parayko would have the highest trade value but not sure if anyone can make the cap hit work.

Gut feeling - where does Patrick Kane end up and when?
Josh Erickson
9:48
I've felt Colorado for a while, likely a one-year deal with bonuses. As a site predicted a two-year deal with Buffalo in our UFA projection piece, which I wouldn't be shocked about either. I don't think he's signing today but also don't think he lasts until August. Teams will likely want to watch him do a workout before he signs, see how his hip's doing.
Can we talk trades too?
9:48
Might the price on Hellebyuck be reasonable enough for some teams consider him just a one year play? For the Devils, could Holtz, Vanacek, a good pick get it done? (Or is this more likely a mid-season trade if he doesn’t get moved over the next few weeks?)
Josh Erickson
9:48
I don't think he's a one-year play unless he remains a Jet by the deadline

Do Mark Scheifele and/or Connor Hellebuyck get traded?  If so, to what teams?
Josh Erickson
9:50
Yes and yes but I don't think it'll be this week. I see Carolina being in on Scheifele if they strike out on the UFA market and NJ would remain the leading Hellebuyck candidate in my mind, but again, he'll need to come down on his extension demands.

Who might the Lightning may be considering for backup goaltender?
Josh Erickson
9:51
G. Backup can be had for league minimum I think
9:53
But seriously, the best guy they can get for six figures, they'll sign. Maybe there's an NHL home there for Alex Lyon. Don't think Blackwood is going to settle for under $1MM

What’s the chance that Elvis gets traded ??
Josh Erickson
9:53
Doubtful, imo. Stock is at an all-time low, don't think it would be a good move

Will Connor Brown sign will Oilers, Maple Leafs or Capitals?
Josh Erickson
9:54
I'd guess Edmonton

What do u see for the bruins?
Josh Erickson
9:55
They need to sign six forwards, including Frederic, and Swayman. They have $13.5MM to do it, so likely around $8MM-$9MM to fill out the forward spots barring any more cap-clearing trades. They'll be competing with Tampa for a lot of bargain bin forwards. I think Boston will be active in snapping up some higher-upside guys who went unqualified yesterday.

What do the Isles do today Duchene or Tarasenko? or nothing as usual.
Josh Erickson
9:55
Mentioned this earlier but I think Tarasenko is an option
Chris Drury

What's my plan? Buy low? Have Cuylle and Othmann fill in on 4th and 3rd line? Think anyone will take less money to come play in NY on a contender?
Josh Erickson
9:57
Wouldn't have Cuylle or Othmann in the NHL full-time until next year. I think you have to trust the young guys you have and hope Laviolette can do what you hope he can do.
9:58
I'll try to get to two or three more Qs here before the hour hits and I pivot to writing articles for the next 12 hours. Really fun session this morning, all, and I'll be looking to these much more frequently in the future

9:59
Do the Bruins wait to clear more space before signing/re-signing or jump into the market right away?
Josh Erickson
9:59
I think they'll try one more desperation move to clear space
Cbj4life
9:59
What will the jackets do ??
Josh Erickson
9:59
Not much. Very limited cap flexibility after the D moves and seems Fantilli won't go back to school, so he should be slated for 2C spot right away in my opinion
