PHR Chat With Gavin Lee: 02/02/17
powered byJotCast
Gavin Lee
5:16
Hey folks, I'm here with our very first live chat. We'll be doing these weekly from now on, just like MLBTR.
5:17
I'll let some questions roll in and start answering at around 5:30.
Alex
5:30
What do you see CBJ doing at or before deadline?
Gavin Lee
5:32
Columbus is an interesting one, because while they have one of the best top-4 in the league on the blueline, there isn't a ton of experience there. Even Jack Johnson only has 18 playoff games under his belt. Look for them to add some veteran depth there.
Dan
5:32
Do you think the Leafs make the playoffs?
Gavin Lee
5:33
As everyone is talking about in Leafland, the schedule is crushed together for them down the stretch. It'll be tough, but with a weak Atlantic Division they have a good shot.
Jake
5:34
Will ANA be able to get a top 6 forward?
Gavin Lee
5:35
They definitely have the assets to do it, but with the league knowing they have an expansion draft problem teams may try to low-ball them.
Dan
5:36
Your pridiction for the Calder?
Gavin Lee
5:37
I think the NHL wants it to be Auston Matthews, but he might not even lead his team in rookie scoring. If he scores 35 (like he might) I think it's his regardless of what Laine gets.
Tulo
5:38
What big moves you are the Habs making
Gavin Lee
5:38
What, losing Barberio on waivers isn't big enough for you? They're going to get a center, somewhere.
AJ
5:39
Will the ducks be able to move Vatanen and his contract and if so could they get anything of value to make it worth it?
Gavin Lee
5:40
If they decide Vatanen is the guy to move, they'll have teams lined up for him. It's that second part of the question that is the tricky part. Getting value for him at the deadline will be tough. The Ducks might have to wait until the summer.
Daniel
5:41
Does anyone really even want Iginla? Sure, the leadership and experience, but at his age and 12 points all season, teams could probably find someone else who is putting up some points and has experience to bring
Gavin Lee
5:42
It's sad that you have to even ask this, but yes. Someone will be after him because he'll come at a ridiculously low price.
5:43
And I mean it's sad only because he's a legend.
Ed
5:43
Which player(s) do you see the Lightning moving before the deadline?
Gavin Lee
5:44
The Bolts have a real crunch coming up in their forward group, and I wouldn't be surprised if Tyler Johnson and Alex Killorn are both playing on other teams come March 1st.
Jake
5:44
Would ANA be able to pry Nylander away from TOR if they offer Fowler & Theodore
Gavin Lee
5:47
Lots of questions about these two teams. Nylander is most definitely not on the block, regardless of what we all want to think. It would take a big package (probably close to what you propose) if he's even available at all. The Leafs brain-trust is going for a slow burn, I highly doubt they'll abandon the plan.
Anthony
5:47
Will the Islanders bring in a scoring winger by the deadline?
Gavin Lee
5:48
Only if he is young and under contract. The Islanders aren't good enough to go after rentals, regardless of their recent streak.
Connor
5:49
Just curious on how much you think the pens could get for fleury. For trade purposes let's say most we would give up would be him+Pouloit
Gavin Lee
5:51
It's an interesting problem isn't it. Fleury can only be traded to 18 teams without his permission, and he's not playing well enough to start a bidding war. If teams need goaltending, Ben Bishop will likely come cheaper.
5:52
The other thing with Fleury is that he comes with a NMC, meaning the acquiring team would be forced to protect him in the expansion draft. I'm not sure the Penguins get what they want for him at the deadline - another one that may wait till the summer.
Blues
5:53
What can the blues expect in return for Bergland?
Gavin Lee
5:55
I actually think Berglund will bring one of the bigger returns at the deadline. A good face-off man with excellent possession numbers will be on almost everyone's list. I think they'll get something like a 2nd and solid prospect, even if he's just a rental.
Ed
5:56
Any goaltenders will be dealt at the deadline?
Gavin Lee
5:57
Bishop will almost certainly be dealt.
Daniel
5:58
Will the NHL end up going to the Olympics?
Gavin Lee
5:58
As much as I'd love to see it, I just don't think it's going to happen.
Connor
5:59
Iginla should've made top 100
Gavin Lee
6:00
Don't even get me started on that list.
Adam
6:02
What would it take for Toronto to get one of Anaheim's defense men such as Fowler, Vatanen, or Manson?
Gavin Lee
6:06
If they dangled Nylander they could land one for sure, but as I said above I just don't think they would. Kapanen and Leipsic getting hurt isn't helping the Leafs if they were really after a young defenseman at the deadline.
Blues
6:07
Will the blues stick with Allen or try trading for Bishop?
Gavin Lee
6:08
I'm not sure if the Blues know the answer to this yet. If Marty Brodeur coming down from the press box helps him at all over the next couple of weeks, then they'll stick with him through the end. If it doesn't, then maybe they do go after Bishop to help them through this year, and reset with Allen next fall.
Mike
6:09
What does Radulov get in the offseason?
Gavin Lee
6:10
A long-term, $6MM+ deal.
