I do. I said last chat, that I think there is interest on both sides and that they'll work hard to get a deal. My faith that it will happen has maybe wavered a bit in the last week, but I still think it'll get done eventually

Again though, they wouldn't announce it until after the expansion draft.

How do you see the Rangers off-season shaking out in terms of the blue line? Any way they can entice Vegas to take Staal? Buyout of Girardi and/or Staal? Do you think Smith will be retained or can they land Shattenkirk?

It does sound like one of Girardi or Staal is one the way out in one way or another.

They both have NMCs so they'd have to get them to waive them and give up a pretty substantial asset to get Vegas to take them.

Buyouts are definitely an option.

I thought they would go after Shattenkirk, but I'm not totally sold on that anymore. He's clearly said he wants to be a #1 somewhere, and that won't happen for the Rangers.

They also have made it clear they want to go younger on the blueline, and while he's by no means old a long-term deal doesn't really accomplish that.

MacLellan talked about how it depends on how far the cap goes up, and it just seemed weird that he'd mention that specifically if they were deep into talks.

By that I mean Oshie likely has given them a number that they're not sure if they can afford yet.

But there's still interest on both sides.

With rumors of NJ being interested in Vatanen, if the Ducks packaged Vatanen with Theodore, Ritchie, and maybe something else, could that get #1 Overall?

But I'm not convinced that Shero is really listening on #1.

Also, why the heck would the Ducks do that?

I doubt any deal will be straight up, but Vatanen is a big piece. He could be part of a lot of deals, for players like van Riemsdyk, Galchenyuk, Johnson, Drouin
