Gavin Lee
6:00
Hello and welcome to another chat!
Boy, that was a newsy day, wasn't it
6:01
I remembered to start the queue early, so we'll get started right away
Mackinnon
6:01
How many games will mackinnon miss?
Gavin Lee
6:01
It's not clear yet, but it looks like it might just be a broken nose
Emily Kaplan tweeted that they'll have a better sense on the weekend
6:02
So that presumably means today, tomorrow at least
M34
6:02
I've been hearing more and more Giroux to colorado talk. Aren't the avalanche over the cap already? How could they fit in anyone with a cap hit like Girouxs?
Gavin Lee
6:03
The Avalanche do have a tiny bit of wiggle room with the players they currently have on injured reserve, but you're certainly right about Giroux not fitting in right now
6:04
But remember that since the deadline is so late this year---middle of March-- cap hits are going to be WAY lower than they seem
6:05
160 days are going to be past already by March 21. That's 80% of the season
6:06
That means there's not going to be a ton of cap hit left on his deal, if they retain half even less
It's going to set up for a really busy deadline, I think, because teams are going to be able to fit in players that they otherwise wouldn't.
Rob
6:07
Any chance I can get a swap of Provorov for Samuel Girard. Would that work for either team?
Gavin Lee
6:08
I don't necessarily think it wouldn't work for either team, but that's a trade that seems very far-fetched at this point to me
It just doesn't seem to make a ton of sense for Colorado to add salary in that way
Or for Philadelphia to target someone like Girard
Jason
6:09
Do you see the Golden Knights trading Reily Smith at or before the deadline for cap space?
Gavin Lee
6:09
He's definitely an option, but who goes is going to depend a ton on Eichel's recovery
It's not like he's on the precipice of a return right now, even though he has skated
6:10
Smith makes a lot of sense as an expiring contract, but there are other ways they could clear the space too
Dan
6:10
Which players may the leafs target?
Gavin Lee
6:10
All of the talk for the Maple Leafs recently has been about acquiring players with term, but I'm not so convinced that will be the case
6:11
Those prices will be very high--a J.T. Miller for instance--and they don't have an overwhelming number of assets to sell from
6:12
I still like the Mark Giordano connection for them, Ben Chiarot certainly would help their toughness and length on the back end
Rob
6:13
Are the Wild better served bringing Rossi up to play 2C. Or trading for a rental (Miller, Hertl,Giroux)?
Gavin Lee
6:13
Miller, notably isn't a rental. He has another year on his deal, which means he's a harder target for them
6:14
I think they would be better off adding someone instead of hoping Rossi can play. They have their sights set on contending, that's too much of a risk
Arizona
6:14
Who could use Chychrun the most on a playoff run and what package would you give for him.
Gavin Lee
6:15
Florida makes the most sense to me as a landing spot, but they probably aren't who could use him the most
6:16
Los Angeles is probably the answer to that question
And if it's them offering, they have so many assets that it could be any mix of them
Don't do Byfield, but after that, it's almost like--pick three
Steve
6:17
Hey Gavin! What do you think the ducks do at the trade deadline? If they trade their ufas what kind of return do they get? Thanks!
Gavin Lee
6:17
I think they're going to get a 1st+ for Lindholm, and keep Manson to see if they can re-sign him.
But that's speculative at this point
6:18
I think by then, they'll probably realize that a bit of a sell is the best move
Rakell might not get you a 1st, Getzlaf stays put, guys like Carrick or Deslauriers get mid/late round picks
6:19
They just love Manson so much
Or at least the old regime did. That's kind of the wildcard here
