Ol 82nd guy
5:20
IF Toews comes to Carolina, does he have the speed to keep up?
Gavin Lee
5:20
This is an interesting point on Carolina. Because of how much they dump and retrieve, cerebral, slower guys might not fit well
5:21
But at the same time, I think Brind'Amour is a smart enough coach to know how to best leverage a player like Toews, if that were to happen
I know his point totals are down and everyone wants to say he's cooked, but there are more teams than you think that would respect his history and smarts enough to be interested

If the Red Wings can't resign Dylan Larkin, do they make a big push for Timo Meier?
Gavin Lee
5:22
You know this actually wouldn't be a bad play, but the worry is if Larkin leaves, who is playing center?
They probably need to invest those resources down the middle

Marek says Toews is gonna cost roughly a 3rd rounder, If I'm Boston I pay that any day.  What do you think?
Gavin Lee
5:23
This is kind of what I mean. If that's the cost, and you have the cap room to do it (which is another story) I think there are a bunch of front offices that would want him in the room/on the bench
Even if he isn't going to score a ton

Been following Cooley. Pretty good year at Minnesota. Do you think he will be a one and done and join Arizona for the last bit of the a season? And what is your thoughts on his upside?
Gavin Lee
5:26
As much as this sounds silly, it might depend on how their season goes. At college programs, there is already a lot of buy-in from the group from the moment of recruitment. They want to achieve something together.

I think it's probably a one and done situation for Cooley, but at the same time, if that whole group – Snuggerud, Cooley, Knies, even Faber, – wanted to go back together, it wouldn't surprise me that much
5:27
His upside is big, it's really big. He's a great prosect, and it didn't shock me to see him go 3rd.
Is he Jack Hughes? Probably not. But he's going to play in the NHL for a long time
Jeremy L
5:27
Does the Hughes injury make a trade for the Devils even more if a priority?
Gavin Lee
5:27
Speaking of Hughes
5:28
I think if anything, it only opens a possibility of spending less at the deadline. If they go in the toilet without Hughes in the lineup, maybe Fitzgerald holds back one more year.
5:29
But I still think they'll be big players. It sounds like they're being a bit cautious with Hughes and it's not that bad

Do you think Kotkaniemi makes it through his contract or is he a 1/3 buyout casualty?
Gavin Lee
5:30
I think he probably makes it through, actually
They have years still before that 1/3rd threshold is an issue. He just needs to be under 26 at the time of the buyout
5:31
In a couple of years, the $4.8MM won't look that bad because of the cap increase
Don't get me wrong. Is it a good contract? Hell no. But I think there's a reasonable chance he finishes it

If the Red Wings can't trade Jakub Varana do they buy him out this summer? It seems like a waste for a team lacking talent, or do they feel the draft picks they got in the trade are enough return to just cut bait?
Gavin Lee
5:32
Sounds like it's either a trade or a buyout, yes.
His time in Detroit is over, it appears. Which is disappointing, but it's not like Mantha has been a huge success in Washington.
Chuck Fletcher
5:33
How am I still employed? In what universe have I made any moves that have actually helped this team? I passed on Caufield twice in the draft. My trades have backfired, and I tend to sign middle of the pack (or even lower) defensemen to huge cap killing contracts. What does ownership see in me??
Gavin Lee
5:33
Haha, the comments from Tortorella today do not paint Fletcher in a good light.
5:34
For anyone that missed it, he basically admitted that the organization didn't know how bad DeAngelo was on defense
I think Fletcher's time is also nearing an end. Tortorella is clearly the biggest voice (or at least the biggest messenger) in the organization now, so at some point, they probably move to a different GM

No one takes Karlsson right? Too much term, too high cap hit,  too high acquisition cost.
Gavin Lee
5:36
That's my guess. I don't think it's an easy deal to be made, even more difficult at the deadline
Bura
5:36
Do you see Seattle maybe targeting another forward after Burakovsky's injury?
Gavin Lee
5:37
They are my dark horse team for Meier, actually. I have wondered it for a while now.

If Larkin does become available, do you think two 1st’s would be enough to get him, and would you give them up?
Gavin Lee
5:39
That probably is pretty close to his value. I generally don't like the idea of huge payments for rentals though
5:40
And by that I don't mean it needs to come with an extension, I don't really understand why that increases the price so significantly. You're just paying more for the opportunity to pay market value on a contract.
But what I mean is, two firsts in the offseason can get you a heck of a player on a contract with term
5:41
Alex DeBrincat just cost a 1-2-3
I know, he comes with a big QO, and it was the 7th overall
