Hello and welcome to another chat!
6:01
I'll let some things come in and get started in a few minutes.

With the flat cap, will the league allow buyout exceptions?  The blackhawks have some serious cap issues with both Shaw and seabrook retiring.
Gavin Lee
6:12
I'm not sure exactly what you mean with buyout exceptions, I assume compliance buyouts that won't affect the cap
They are not planning those, no
6:13
In terms of Seabrook and Shaw in particular, both players will be placed on long-term injured reserve
It gives the Blackhawks almost complete flexibility with the cap space they would have eaten up
6:14
It's a little more complicated, but it can actually be beneficial in some scenarios (see Tampa Bay) to be in LTIR with no chance of the player returning
Nathan MacKinnon’s Agent
6:14
Am I receiving a call from Joe Salic to lock me up instead of letting me hit free agency next summer? And how will my client’s situation be or not be affected by Gabriel Langskog’s contract situation?
Gavin Lee
6:14
If Nathan MacKinnon reaches free agency, i'll get a tattoo of whichever team signs him
6:15
He will get an extension
A HUGE one, but it'll be with Colorado
It shouldn't be affected by Landeskog's negotiation, in fact it'll be the other way around.
6:16
The Avalanche can't go to a certain level with Landeskog because they know they have Makar and MacKinnon to sign
I still think they get all three done with relative ease
6:17
One thing I would like to point out though, to everyone saying "contracts will be signed after the expansion draft to help the team" --yes, in some cases. But remember that Seattle also gets a window to negotiate with pending UFAs before the draft.
If you don't have complete faith that the player will sign with you, it's hard to wait
Take Dougie Hamilton for instance. Sure, it would help the Hurricanes to wait until after the draft to sign him
But do you really want to give Ron Francis the option to sit in a room with him?
6:18
You just never know, right? So some deals will get done ahead of time

6:18
Is there any word on the Rangers announcing a new head coach? Are they looking to talk to others after they did so w/ Gallant & Tocchet?
Gavin Lee
6:18
There is some thought that they are waiting to make sure things don't turn sour in Carolina with Brind"Amour before making a decision
6:19
If that negotiation breaks down somehow (and I don't think it will), there will be teams kicking themselves for not waiting
At the end of the day, especially with Columbus hiring Brad Larsen today, I think it will be Gallant in New York

Islanders keep advancing but looking ahead to the expansion draft, who do you see as likely candidates to be left unprotected and/or taken?
Gavin Lee
6:23
We'll be starting our expansion primer series in the next few days, looking at the situations more carefully--but just a quick glance you'd probably protect:

Lee
Barzal
Nelson
Eberle
Bailey
Pageau
Beauvillier

Pulock
Pelech
Mayfield

Varlamov

Maybe Leddy over Mayfield? Maybe they want to protect Bellows somehow?
6:24
I think whichever defenseman they leave exposed is probably the choice, but maybe Seattle takes a krack at someone like Bellows or Dal Colle, hoping to unlock the potential
Don't think they're really in trouble
Michael N
6:24
On that note, would there be anything to Brind'Amour leaving Carolina? Only place I heard he'd consider if he walked away was going to Seattle because of his relationship w/ GM Ron Francis
Gavin Lee
6:25
You know, I obviously have made that connection too, but I've actually heard that may not be as much of a deal as once thought.
6:26
Remember that Francis was gone by the time the Hurricanes made Brind'Amour head coach
I think the Hurricanes get it done with him eventually
6:27
But it wouldn't only be Seattle calling if he became a free agent
Brind'Amour is one of the hottest commodities in coaching right now

6:27
Do the Habs have any chance against Vegas or Colorado?
Gavin Lee
6:28
They "didn't have a chance" against the Maple Leafs or Jets, so does it really matter?
They're playing excellent hockey and have a hot goalie
That equals playoff success
Michael N
6:28
Do you think an Eichel trade will happen before the expansion draft?
Gavin Lee
6:29
That's what, six weeks from now?
