Gavin Lee
6:00
Hello and welcome to another chat!
We're just a few weeks away from preseason hockey
A little over a month from the start of the regular season
Where did the summer go?
6:01
I'll give people a few minutes to jump in and send some questions
Vancouver Guy
6:08
Assuming Pettersson & Hughes get signed before camp, where do you see the Canucks fitting into the Pacific Division?  Is the competition mediocre enough for them to grab a spot in the top 3?
Gavin Lee
6:08
It's certainly possible, but quite frankly I'm very frightened of their defense
6:09
I'm just honestly not sure where you're going to find the minutes needed to let Hughes be Hughes in juicier matchups.
6:10
I know they brought in Ekman-Larsson, but I don't like the Poolman signing (mostly because of term) and I'm not confident Hamonic is a true top-four anymore.
6:11
Add in the fact that their center depth is iffy at best in the defensive end, and I'm scared they're going to be forced to use guys in roles that aren't ideal
Phil
6:13
What year (maybe decade) do you think the Sabres will be realistically competitive?
Gavin Lee
6:13
I have sailed that ship too many times. They should have been competitive already.
6:14
They just keep grinding their valuable assets into oblivion and then trading them at the lowest point
Habs fan
6:15
Will Bergevin match Carolina's offer sheet for Kopinemi, and if not, what is available to strengthen Montreal's center position?
Gavin Lee
6:16
We're going to have a piece coming out about the offer sheet tomorrow, where each of the PHR writers give our opinion so stay tuned for that.

But one thing I'll say is that I don't think it's a slam dunk to let him walk. I know Kotkaniemi has been a bit disappointing, but I'm not sure why everyone is instantly saying that his ceiling is the third line.
6:18
In terms of how they could add to the center spot if they do let him leave--the prices out there right now are too high. They could pull the trigger, sure, but they'll be overpaying and not actually getting much--if any-- excess value
Everyone keeps saying Christian Dvorak
6:19
As if he's some sort of locked in top-six center?
Dvorak has never put up 40 points in a season, he's 25, and he already makes $4.45M.
He's not a huge difference-maker for them.
snow is my season
6:20
any chances the rangers can afford  both mika and eichel?
Gavin Lee
6:20
Probably not, with the Panarin contract on the books
I mean Adam Fox is going to get paid
6:21
I'm not even sure if they can afford Zibanejad anyway, let alone after adding Eichel
Cap Crunch
6:21
Jim Benning cleared a bunch of money off the books short term, but their situation looks like a potential disaster going forward.... am I wrong?  They are going to have to let somebody really good walk in the next few years.  Horvat?  Miller?
Gavin Lee
6:21
Yeah he didn't even really clear that much room
He just moved it into OEL and Garland
6:22
I'd say of the two listed, Miller is much more likely to walk.
Ron Hextall
6:22
So am I comfortable going into the season with Marcus Patterson and Jason Zucker on the roster? They’re good players but am I questioning their fit for our club like many fans or am I thinking the criticism of those guys is overblown? And if I were to trade them, what would be good fits and realistic returns for each? (Obviously their cap hits are also a big component of this topic as well.)
Gavin Lee
6:23
A big critique of Hextall in Philadelphia, and one of the reasons he was fired, was his patience. I don't think he was ever going to put up a for sale sign on those players, and there just wasn't the return necessary for those players
6:24
I don't think it's the end of the world to start the year with them, but I agree with the idea that they're both a bit redundant.
6:25
I thought Zucker would have been a target for Edmonton, before they made the Duncan Keith move. With the same idea of moving Koskinen back, like they tried with Chicago
6:26
I just am not sure what the return would really look like at this point, because the whole league is basically pushed up to the cap or nearing their internal budget
Adding salary like that is really difficult right now
Not Mo
6:26
Somebody has to want Tarasenko right?  I just can't see him returning to the Blues this month.
Gavin Lee
6:26
I thought it would be done by now, so I'm not really sure what is going on there.
JStine
6:27
I've been wondering if the Blues and Sabres could get together for an Eichel for Tarasenko +++ deal. Obviously the likelihood is low, but what would the "+++" look like from STL if the discussion were to happen?
Gavin Lee
6:27
This doesn't make much sense to me at all from Buffalo's perspective
6:28
Unless it's Tarasenko represents no value for St. Louis, which is unlikely I think
(also Tarasenko has that pesky no-trade clause, which would likely block something like that)
