Hello and welcome to another chat!
I'll let some questions roll in and get started in a few minutes
Phil
6:07
Obligatory Sabres question of the week. Any idea how they get to the salary floor? Is the plan to take on twice the money of Eichel in an Eichel trade and try to buy draft picks?? Not sure there are any FA left to pay.
Gavin Lee
6:07
They don't need to take on twice the money back, they're only a few million from the floor now with Dahlin still to sign.
6:08
But it does make the Eichel trade more complicated, because it can't be for picks/prospects
6:09
Frankly I'm not sure what they'll do. No team is out there hoping to drop $10M in active players, and the bad contracts have mostly settled on the other rebuilding clubs

Realistically, what kind of production would you expect from Taylor Hall this year? Obviously the B's need him to be a driving force offensively, and hopefully he can become more than just a supplement to the first line this year, but they don't have a high-end or even average 2C (I'm not sold on Coyle in a top-6 role, even if his contract suggests otherwise), and Craig Smith's performance last year felt a bit like lightning in a bottle. Does Hall have enough around him to play to his ceiling, or at least anything close?
Gavin Lee
6:14
The thing about Hall is that at his best, he actually doesn't need much help. His offense is all about speed and power and forechecking, when playing to his peak.
It's not about pretty plays or working a full cycle, but immediate offense off a turnover or an opportunity in the neutral zone
6:15
Of course, that offense has eluded him much the last little while, and we may never see the player that won the Hart for New Jersey again
In terms of where he fits into the lineup, I actually wonder if he'll end up on a different line than Coyle and Smith eventually.
With Foligno maybe taking his spot there instead
6:16
I am not very bullish on his overall production, but that 50-60 point range still seems more than reasonable.
6:17
Whether that's enough to really be worth the deal, who knows at this point.
Phil
6:18
Is there any offer sheet structure the Sens wouldn't match for Tkachuk?
Gavin Lee
6:18
Well there is certainly something that they wouldn't match. If you gave him 4 years at $15MM AAV or something. But no one is going to do that
So no, I don't think the danger is really there
6:19
They may actually welcome one at this point just to get it done
6:20
I guess a bit ironically, the structure that the Canadiens tried with Aho may actually be more effective against the Senators, though I still think even then it would be matched.
I just know that Eugene Melnyk wouldn't be thrilled about paying it all up front
Rob
6:20
Does Kaprizov sign before training camp starts?
Gavin Lee
6:20
I still lean toward yes, but boy, we're getting close
6:21
I don't think he will miss any regular season games.
Canes
6:21
This question may only require a one word response, but I'm asking partially for my own amusement anyway--is there any logical explanation for the way the Canes handled the Ned situation (to say nothing of their questionable decisions this offseason in general...)
Gavin Lee
6:22
The explanation is simple, I think. I've talked about it here before. Nedeljkovic has never been the Hurricanes goalie of the future. They blocked him every chance they got, they didn't trust him to even be the team's third goaltender at one point this year!
They don't trust him as a starter in the NHL, or at least not as their starter. So they moved on
6:24
I would also caution people from overreacting to his rookie season too. Be careful about goalies that get hot for a few weeks or months and then get paid
Vlad
6:25
If Tarasenko was traded twice with max salary retention, how much would he cost the 3rd team. Can you see Seattle being willing to be one of the retainers?
Gavin Lee
6:26
They could get his cap hit down to $1.875MM, I believe.
Though it would take quite a bit of assets, remember he has two years left, not one
6:27
This isn't a deadline rental, this is putting a bunch on your books for the next two seasons
And yes, Seattle was confirmed to be open to it heading into the expansion draft, so I presume they still would be (though that's just speculative at this point, I guess).

6:28
On opening night, Vegas' 3rd and 4th line centers will be ______  and ______.
Gavin Lee
6:29
Nolan Patrick and Nicolas Roy
Just a guess at this point

Who is more likely to relocate; 'Zona or the Panthers (both have been previously mentioned - over the years as likely candidates) and if relocation is in the cards is it Québec city or are there other viable options?
Gavin Lee
6:30
Lots of questions about Arizona relocating tonight.
I think probably more likely is the Coyotes, but that doesn't mean they are likely to
6:31
I still think the NHL is going to fight tooth and nail to keep them there.
I think more than anything, they just beat the Panthers by default, who I don't think are in danger of relocation anytime soon.
