Do you think Ottawa will experiment with Stutzle down the middle during camp/preseason? Or is it still too early? I figure they drafted him to eventually be a centre
Gavin Lee
6:33
Yes, I think they've even confirmed that they'll try it this year
John
6:34
So Philly gets Ellis. I am thinking that he would be their QB then they get yandle. Who takes the top PP role?
Gavin Lee
6:34
I don't think Provorov is completely out of that mix either
But I don't think Yandle will be PP1
6:35
It will be interesting to see how things shake out
6:36
Remember Ristolainen has plenty of powerplay experience as well
Mike
6:37
With kotkaniemi on board, Trocheck done after this season? Can’t wait to see what Necas can do…breakout year perhaps?
Gavin Lee
6:37
Was this season not his breakout? Are people still unaware of how good Martin Necas is?
6:38
But for the first part, I don't think it necessarily means Trochek is gone because of Kotkaniemi, but I also think he's going to probably price himself out of their market
6:39
Remember this is a guy who was almost a point-per-game last season with the Hurricanes. If he does something like that again, can you imagine the rush for him in free agency? A true center, who will not even be 29 (July 11), who scores that much?
6:40
There will be 20 teams after him

6:41
What becomes of the Evander Kane situation?
Gavin Lee
6:42
I can't speak to the specifics of the investigation, but in his interview today with Linda Cohn, he was sure that he will be cleared in terms of the gambling on his own games side of it
The weird part about the interview in my eyes though was how unspecific he was about any of the locker room issues, and basically just said that he didn't believe the media reports that teammates were frustrated
6:43
That part was just weird to me all over and I wish she had pushed for specifics
wreckage
6:43
She is on TSN right now saying producers edited a lot of the interview out that she wanted in.
Gavin Lee
6:44
Wow, I'll have to watch that after this chat, thanks. I wonder what was left out
Anyway, the whole situation with San Jose basically comes down to his no-trade clause
The team doesn't have a way out, unless he allows it or an investigation/lawsuit voids his contract
6:45
He can list three teams he is willing to be traded to, but a smart agent just makes that the three teams that want nothing to do with him, and suddenly it's a full no-trade clause
John
6:45
San Jose seems in no mans land. Trying to retool but those big contracts are tough karlsson burns vlasic couture Kane
Gavin Lee
6:46
Very much so
Though, I actually don't think it's insane to believe they are more competitive this season
With more reliable goaltending they could actually push for a playoff spot, I know that sounds crazy
6:47
But you look at the Pacific Division and there's a path there to the playoffs for some of these teams that have missed the last few years
Sasha
6:48
Barkov going to be MVP and get a monster contract?
Gavin Lee
6:48
I am very, very interested to see him line up with Reinhart at some point.
6:49
But he doesn't need the MVP for a monster contract
John
6:51
timo Meier next year salary is 10 mil? Don’t rhey have to qualify him at that number to keep him? Seems like a pending UFA now. Can he bounce back or was it more the team.
Gavin Lee
6:51
They sure do. When he signed that deal, it was basically a five-year, $34MM agreement, if they wanted to keep him
6:52
The new rules that were amended in the MOU last summer don't apply to his contract because it was signed previously
But remember they can still agree to a lower number if they want
6:53
There is also the same team-elected salary arbitration mechanism that I mentioned the other week in regards to Kotkaneimi. Technically they could get his contract down to 85% of the $10M qualifying offer, but even that $8.5MM number is probably too high, right?
John
6:55
Shocked to see Griffin Reinhart’s decline take him all the way down to the UK league already?
Gavin Lee
6:55
Just one thing to note about this, it sounds like Reinhart is attending school over there and the team he signed with is paying for it. That's why he's in the EIHL
6:56
When he left his DEL team, the release indicated it was for academic purposes, but then the EIHL signing muddled that up for me at first
Jackets fan
6:57
Any chance laine shows up this year, and any realistic playoff chance for the jackets?
Gavin Lee
6:57
It's just the division they're in is so tough
Say we count the Islanders and Hurricanes in (which isn't a lock, but seems most likely)
Connecting…
