PHR Live Chat: Post-Deadline Special

Gavin Lee

Hello and welcome to another chat!
Let's talk deadline moves, and what comes next
This one will probably be a little shorter, but still fun

Safe to say that a 2nd round pick for Jeremy Lauzon was the biggest overpayment of the trade deadline?
Gavin Lee
6:07
How did our writer Josh put it--"If Minnesota doesn't make the West final, the returns for Marc-Andre Fleury and Jeremy Lauzon will be the same."
6:08
Although I still might give the title to Kulak
6:09
Or maybe Lehkonen *ducks*

Was KK plus a pick too much for the Wild to pay for Middleton?
Gavin Lee
6:10
It's definitely a pretty high cost, but I think they probably didn't want to pay him next season/long-term
And as long as Middleton plays in 14 (I think) games, he's still an RFA

Overall how do you think the Kraken did in their first ever trade deadline?
Gavin Lee
6:11
They did very well, this is how they should have been going all along
Now why did they sign Schwartz, Grubauer, and Wennberg?
Building through the draft was the obvious choice, still don't get why they spent so heavily on free agents

Update on the trade that is under review?
Gavin Lee
6:14
There's no real update other than this (very unofficial) timeline:

Dadonov submits no-trade list Jun 30 (deadline was July 1)
Ottawa trades Dadonov to Vegas, not on no-trade list.
Vegas and NHL "led to believe" that no-trade list was never submitted, and thus expired.
Vegas trades Dadonov to Anaheim, NHL approves deal
Dadonov tells people in locker room that Anaheim is on no-trade list.
Agent calls Vegas tells them he won't waive
NHL investigates, finds evidence trade list was submitted on time.
And now we wait
I think it's going to get voided, but that's personal opinion more than any inside knowledge

Why would the Wild trade Victor Rask to Seattle and retain salary for nothing in return?
Gavin Lee
6:15
Well it saves them a little bit of money/cap but honestly I don't really understand it
6:17
I thought it was kind of doing him a favor, get him back in the NHL with Seattle (that is run by Francis, who was with Rask in Carolina), but then they assigned him to the AHL right away
George
6:17
Obviously the focus was on accumulating draft picks, but do you think Sprong and/or Rask can work their way into Seattle’s future plans?
Gavin Lee
6:17
Rask is a UFA at the end of the year and I'd be surprised if he got a one-way NHL deal, to be honest
6:18
Sprong is an RFA though, and will probably get a shot to play there
He's always been very talented, but I don't really see him becoming an impact player at this point

6:18
Prior to the deadline, the Bolts and Panthers in the East and the Avs and Flames in the west were considered the teams to beat. Has that changed at all after the past few days of deals?
Gavin Lee
6:19
Not really, though I do think the Rangers are going to be a tough out
That's a lot of solid pieces they added, to a team that already had a goaltender who is talented enough to steal a series
Andrew Copp is better than people think, and Justin Braun is a nice complement to the guys they have on the back end
6:20
Motte is Motte, he's just going to run around banging off stuff and causing havoc

Why didn’t we trade laine ?? The way he’s been hot . Does he have a future with the jackets ??
Gavin Lee
6:20
Laine is such a hard player to read, because he can be simultaneously aloof and frustrated
6:21
It's hard to tell which is which sometimes
I don't know if he has a future there, but he seems to say the right things when pressed on it, and Kekalainen certainly would understand how he's feeling
As for trading him, I never expected that at the deadline
Maybe in the summer/at the draft

What do you think of the bruins getting Josh Brown
Gavin Lee
6:22
He is a terrible defenseman, but he can really hit
I doubt he plays all that much
Adam
6:22
Most exciting trade you got to reveal?
