How good is Timo Meier? Is he capable of 40 goals/yr?
Brian La Rose
6:42
The way he's going, he could get there this season.
6:43
I didn't see this coming.  I figured he'd settle in nicely on the second line and approach the 25-30 goal mark this season.
6:44
He's young enough to think he could still continue to improve so 40 could be doable, even if he slides back and doesn't get there this season.

You’re starting a new team. Choose one of each position: C: Pettersson or Barzal. RW: Marner or Rantanen. LW: Svechnikov or Connor. D: Chabot or Dahlin. G: Hart or Samsonov
Brian La Rose
6:45
At center, I'll take Pettersson - a little more dynamic than Barzal overall.
6:46
On the right side, Marner's an elite playmaker but Rantanen's putting up crazy numbers this year.  How much of that is line dependent though?  I'll take Marner here but not by much.
6:47
On the left, I think Svechnikov can get to 35-40 goals in the right situation.  I like Connor and I think he's a better all-around player but I want the sniping upside here, especially with Marner on the other wing.
6:48
On defense, I don't think Chabot's current output is sustainable long-term.  I believe Dahlin has a shot at being a 60-70 point d-man in his prime so I'll go with him.
6:51
I really liked Samsonov in his draft year but Hart's junior career tells me he has the chance to be special so I'll go with him.

6:51
Any chance of Lamoriello convincing Sorokin to buy out the final year of his deal and make the jump next year?
Brian La Rose
6:52
Sorokin isn't the only one that needs to be convinced.
6:53
I can't see CSKA letting him go, something his agent told a Russian reporter earlier this month.

6:54
He'd really be a boost for the Islanders but it's going to be 2020-21 before he suits up.

What can the Blues realistically expect back for Petro?
Brian La Rose
6:55
They can get a huge return but it won't be at the Erik Karlsson level.
6:56
This was a topic in our last mailbag and I pegged a possible return as a couple of roster players (for money matching purposes), a first-round pick, a top prospect, and a couple of other secondary pieces (later picks/lesser prospects).
6:57
I think a move won't come until the offseason, however.  This type of contract is hard to take on midseason so there will be more suitors at the draft which should help his market (even if the acquiring team only gets one playoff run that way).

6:57
Will the leafs trade for parayko or who else will they get
Brian La Rose
6:58
He'd be a great fit in Toronto (or just about any other team) but I don't see the Blues moving him - especially if they are considering moving Pietrangelo.
6:59
Cost control needs to be considered here so if I was Kyle Dubas, I want someone that's still on their entry-level deal or close to it.
7:00
The problem is, there aren't a lot of those readily available which makes it hard to speculate about a possible fit.
7:01
I know Dubas wants to stay away from the rental market but if he can't get a cost-controlled player, he may have to change his plans.

7:04
Will there be a flurry of moves after the roster freeze?
Brian La Rose
7:04
The insiders seemed to be expecting a bit of a flurry before but it didn't come to fruition.
7:05
Chances are that not much will change over the next week to really change that.
7:06
Come January though, I think we'll start to see a bit more movement on the trade front.
Alex
7:08
It's still early but are there any notable non-tender candidates this year?
Brian La Rose
7:09
I have a hard time thinking Ottawa is going to qualify Cody Ceci at $4.3MM.  He's someone I could see them trying to deal in the next couple of months.
7:10
I don't think Andre Burakovsky's level of play warrants a $3.25MM QO as things stand.  If Washington had more flexibility on the cap, they could give him one more chance but they need more bang for that buck whether it's from him or someone else.
7:11
I'm not sure he qualifies as notable but Nathan Beaulieu could be on that list as well.  His second year in Buffalo isn't going well and he's on their third pairing when he is in the lineup.  $2.5MM for a QO is on the expensive side.
7:13
And with that, we'll call it a night.  Thanks to everyone for coming out and have a safe and happy holiday.
