They said explicitly that they'll be interested in the rental market again this year, but to your point they don't have a lot to trade.
There are still some prospects there, but you can't keep pulling from the cupboard every year without draft picks to restock it.

With Shultz set to return before the deadline, do you see Mataa as a trade chip with petterson and riikola stepping up? Brassard is all but gone I feel, who do you see the pens trying to replace him with?

Maatta has been a trade candidate for a while, but Jim Rutherford loves to have too many D when he's heading into the playoffs.

I'm not convinced he'll move one like Maatta at the deadline.
Brassard on the other hand is going somewhere, but I don't think it's a guarantee that he's replaced by another center.

Sure, in a perfect world you'd bring one back and slot him in. But there are enough versatile forwards in Pittsburgh that bringing in a winger like Ferland could be the big move.

He's going to set a career high in goals, is still young enough to be around when they're more competitive, and is on a reasonable contract.

I would guess that Martinez, Toffoli are going, while others like Clifford and Forbort could as well.
Don't think the big names will go--Kovalchuk, Brown, Quick--and would be floored if Kopitar or Doughty were even discussed.

Honestly it's almost too hard of a trade to make, given his contract.

Voracek is a good player, but I'm not sure anyone is going to shell out a big package for five more years, and at that point why move him?

But it'll be a big one.

Pavelski meanwhile is a more complicated one. Does he look for years like Marleau, or take the single-year approach like Thornton.

Eakins is a good coach. If it's him, they're in pretty good hands but I wouldn't go screaming for joy.
