Gavin Lee
6:00
Hello folks! Welcome to another chat. Hopefully we'll have a little more action than last week.
I'll get things started in a few minutes.

What happens with Marner, and the other holdouts waiting on Marner
Gavin Lee
6:10
I still believe that the Marner situation will be resolved after training camp, either on the first day of the season or thereabouts.
6:11
I think it'll be a shorter deal, with a pretty high hit.
If I'm right though, the other situations become very interesting.
Players like Connor and Werenski have made it clear they don't want to miss training camp, and I can imagine several other names think the same way.
6:12
That puts a lot of pressure on themselves to get something done even if Marner's not signed yet, which probably benefits the team.
Connor
6:12
Hey Gavin! Thanks for doing these & all always! My ? For u is will bruins make any kind of trades?
Gavin Lee
6:13
I still think they have to, and I still think Miller makes the most sense.
I know they can get McAvoy and Carlo in under the cap theoretically, but it will be difficult to get them in and be able to bank any room during the season.
6:14
I think Kampfer and Clifton offer more upside for a way lower cost, and Miller is a UFA in a year.
Obviously Backes is still the name everyone wants to hear, but it's really hard to get out of that deal.

6:14
How do you like the Guerin hire?
Gavin Lee
6:15
He's basically the exact opposite of Fenton, so I guess that's a good thing.
But to be totally honest I haven't loved the way he's operated Wilkes-Barre/Scranton since Botterill left and I'm not sure if he'll be a success in Minnesota where he'll be pressured by an owner that wants to win
Craig Leipold doesn't want to rebuild, he always wants to move forward.
6:16
That's a tough situation for any GM, especially a rookie one that might give in a little easier.
6:17
I think Hextall might have been the better choice, but his way of building a team likely isn't what Leipold was after.
Patrick
6:17
Who do you think did the best in regards to improving their team from last year
Gavin Lee
6:18
You have to look at the Rangers for that probably. Kakko, Panarin, Trouba, Fox
That's a pretty insane summer.
Obviously others like the Devils, Stars, Avalanche and even maybe the Sabres should be in the conversation.
6:19
I like the Dzingel/Haula moves for Carolina, but think they moved backwards with the de Haan deal.
Still not sure what to think of their goaltending.
6:20
Vancouver is certainly a better team, but I'm not sure giving up a 1st rounder for JT Miller and $30MM for Tyler Myers is what they needed to do.
Elwood
6:20
Do you think Ristolainen will be in Buffalo to start the year?
Gavin Lee
6:20
I do. Will he finish it there? Maybe not.
6:21
Some people are wondering if the move Jake Gardiner is apparently waiting on is Ristolainen, but I don't know if I buy in.
Patrick
6:21
Was Brassard a good pickup for Isles or should they have gone with youth in system
Gavin Lee
6:22
I don't really see it as a "good" move, but it also comes with basically zero risk.
I wouldn't put money on Brassard ever becoming what he once was, or even really a helpful piece to a championship team.
6:23
But at the same time, if someone handed you a lottery ticket and said "this is free," you'd be sure to check it at the end of the week.

6:23
Is there a chance that Laine and Rantanen and other RFAs will sign before Marner does?
Gavin Lee
6:23
I think there's a pretty good chance, if Marner's not signed by the start of camp.
Which again, I don't see happening.
6:24
At some point some of the RFAs will realize whatever benefit they're potentially getting by waiting is offset by hurting their season.

6:25
Which youngster makes the biggest impact on the ducks blueline this season? And up front? And do you think zegras gets a sniff this season after his college season is over? Thanks!
Gavin Lee
6:25
I'd expect Brendan Guhle to make the biggest impact on the blueline, though I've like Josh Mahura's game for a long time.
6:26
Up front I think Troy Terry might be ready to really become an impact player.
