Hello and welcome to another chat!
It's been tough sledding waiting for hockey, I know.
But it's almost here!
Send in your questions, comments or whatever else and we'll get started in a few minutes.

Will the Flyers get a deal done with konechy
Gavin Lee
6:10
I believe they will, but it sounds like things are a lot closer with Provorov.
6:11
Bob McKenzie tweeted today about how the Flyers are trying to offer him a deal based on his sub-15 minutes of ice time through his first few players, but Konecny's camp is pointing at his rate stats.
That's a philosophical difference, but it's obvious both sides want to get something done.

i think teams will jump on rfa’s next off season, then free agents contracts will go down.  What you think of that possibility?
Gavin Lee
6:12
What do you mean by "jump"?
Teams are working to lock up their guys, not wanting to be caught in this sort of thing.
But that has happened for a long time.

Hi are the Bruins still looking for a R.W ?
Gavin Lee
6:13
I don't think anything can happen until they get something done with McAvoy and Carlo.
It sounds like there has been progress on that front which is good, but it's hard to make any other significant moves until you know where those two stand.

Teams will go after the rfa’s in a much more aggressive way, then worry about role players later.
Gavin Lee
6:14
I'm not so sure anything will really change. These young RFAs coming off the entry-level deal have basically zero incentive to sign early in the summer.
On the other hand, you can't wait around until the middle of September to sign the UFA you want.
6:15
You can see exactly what happens in that situation with Jake Gardiner.
The Hurricanes got their RFA done early (thanks, Montreal!) and were able to land a good piece at a lower price because everyone else is frozen.
6:16
If you're a team with an RFA, you have to get those "role players" even if it might put you in a tight spot later.
Or someone that doesn't have an RFA is going to snap them up at a discount

Faulk open the season in Carolina or else where?
Gavin Lee
6:17
I would be shocked if he plays another game for the Hurricanes

Will Bowen Byram make the Avs? Personally I think he should get nine games and go back for one year of juniors. But he has so much talent.
Gavin Lee
6:18
I think it depends on Erik Johnson and Ian Cole, and how long they'll miss.
6:19
I've suggested it before, and I think it could work. Play him the first chunk of the season, send him to the World Juniors, bring him back and give him a conditioning stint in the minor leagues, then send him to the WHL for a playoff run.
More than nine games, fewer than 40. That's the real threshold.
That's when he gets a year closer to UFA
6:20
Burning a year of entry-level isn't a terrible thing in some cases, defense especially.
They have a smaller sample to go into the next negotiation with, and since Byram isn't going to get PP1 time while Cale Makar is on the team, he shouldn't have a huge number of points to leverage anyway.
6:21
He's too good for junior, he proved that. I would test him in several different ways this year.

Pittsburgh Penguins are doing
Gavin Lee
6:21
They just signed Marcus Pettersson to a very cheap deal about an hour and a half ago
I imagine that's followed by a trade, though I'm not clear exactly who it would be at this point
6:22
They don't necessarily have to right away.

Care to predict which goalies break camp in Raleigh?
Gavin Lee
6:23
I would actually predict Mrazek and Forsberg.
Even with a trade of Faulk, the Hurricanes need a big of wiggle room.
6:24
I don't think anyone would grab Reimer off waivers for his $3.4MM deal, so you can save some there and start banking it throughout the year.
